Minnesota at Cleveland
The Indians stole one from the Twins last night by doing the nearly impossible and beating Minnesota with Johan Santana on the mound. The unexpected loss was a blow to Ron Gardenhire's team as they dropped a game to Detroit in the Central and failed to distance themselves from Chicago in the wild card. But it should help focus them on the task at hand today, which is getting to the Tribe's C.C. Sabathia. This won't be easy as the big left-hander has a tiny 2.64 ERA in 14 starts since June 27. But his 6-5 record over that period also reflects the lack of support Cleveland has provided him. With Minnesota's Carlos Silva pitching better of late (one run allowed in last two starts), the Twins look like a worthy underdog play in this one according to Dunkel, which has Minnesota favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but................
13) The three first place teams in NL went a combined 16-29 in interleague play. The three last place teams in the AL went a combined 35-19 against the National League.
12) Pirate 3B Freddy Sanchez, one of NL's leading hitters, was born with a club foot. Pretty amazing how far he's come.
11) Going into Friday's games, the top five hitters in NL were all righthanded; last time season ended that way was in 1964.
10) Handicapping dilemma: Mississippi State is 11-point fave over Tulane. In two games this season, MSU hasn't scored a point, and hasn't crossed opponents' 40-yard line.
9) It has come to this: Bill Buckner is now appearing at shows to sign autographs with Mookie Wilson, a la Ralph Branca and Bobby Thomson. Not sure how I feel about this. I mean, shouldn't John McNamara have to be signing at show too, for not having Dave Stapleton is as defensive replacement?
8) South Carolina suspended QB Mitchell for being in a fight in a bar; Gamecocks play Wofford this week, Florida Atlantic next. The real test of the suspension is whether or not he gets reinstated for the Auburn game, which comes after FAU.
7) New Mexico State has lost eight fumbles in two games, but they're racking up ton of passing yardage, in second year of Hal Mumme's tenure in Las Cruces.
6) Underdog is 28-9 vs spread in NC State's last 37 road tilts.
5) This is hard to believe, but Florida State is second-to-last in nation in rushing yardage, gaining just 23 yards a game.
4) Not only did Nebraska play I-AA team last week, but they played Nicholls State, a team that threw three passes in the entire game, even though they lost 56-7. I'm sure that playing them got the Cornhuskers ready for USC. What major league team clinched its division the earliest? The
3) Seattle Mariners been shut out fifteen times this season, more than any other big league team.
2) '75 Reds, who clinched on September 7.
1) There have been forty Super Bowls; of those 80 teams that played in those 40 games, noly three started the season 0-2.

Hot Streaks:
Anibal Sanchez (Florida Marlins) - Sanchez has won his last five in a row, allowing only seven runs in his last 42 innings. Two starts ago against Arizona, Sanchez pitched the first no-hitter the MLB has seen in three years.
Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) - Ever since Wang threw 109 pitches, allowing only three hits and no runs against Detroit on Aug. 30, everything has gone his way. He has a 1.74 ERA in his last three starts. He’s won his last five, allowing nine runs in 32 ½ innings.
Chris Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals) - Carpenter has the league’s lowest ERA. Even lower in his last three, where batters have had a hard time hitting anything. His performance at home is outstanding (1.47 ERA) and he didn’t allow a single run in his last outing against Houston.
Cold Streaks:
Chris Michalak (Cincinnati Reds) - Michilak hasn’t started since Aug. 28 and has never pitched against the Cubs. In his last start he allowed four runs and seven hits in four innings. He is 0-4 in his last four starts.
Matt Morris (San Francisco Giants) - Morris let up six runs in five innings against San Diego last Saturday. His start before that was a 3-0 loss to Cincinnati. He posts a 6.87 ERA in his last three.
John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - Smoltz has had troubles with cramps lately and his pitching has been almost his worst to date. Since his last win Aug. 28, Smoltz has allowed 16 runs in 13 innings making his ERA 11.08.
Other notables:
Rich Hill (Chicago Cubs) - Hill has won five of seven decisions since being recalled from the minors on July 27. The Cubs have won his last three starts.
