      Dunkel Index - NFL

      Carolina at Minnesota
Funny how impressions about teams can change after one game. No bigger example of that than the Carolina Panthers, who were picked by many to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl but now find themselves in a pick 'em game against a team (Minnesota) that lost to them by 25 points (38-13) last year. Certainly Carolina looked like anything but champs in Week One when the Panthers were dominated at home by the Falcons (20-6). And questions remain about how effective the offense can be without wide receiver Steve Smith, who remains questionable for the game with a lingering hamstring injury. But what was most surprising was a defense that ranked No. 3 last year in yardage allowed (282.6 per game) giving up 385 yards to the Falcons. That's something that should improve this week and enable the Panthers to take advantage of the dropping Vegas line according to Dunkel, which has Carolina favored by 3 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Carolina. Here are all of this week's games.

          Kansas Vs Toledo

          KANSAS VS TOLEDO

          Friday's Game

Toledo is 24-12 vs spread in last 36 tries as home favorite; they lost 63-14 in Lawrence two years ago (+3). Kansas hung on for 21-19 win over UL-Monroe last week, but Warhawks passed for 382 yards on only 24 completions, so Jayhawks have DB issues; they covered only five of last fifteen non-Big 12 road games; they're 3-6 vs spread in their last nine road openers. Toledo off to rough 0-2 start, getting upset in Kalamazoo last week (outscored 24-0 in second half), after dropping opener in OT at Iowa State.

          Kansas (2-0) at Toledo (0-2) 12 pm EST ESPN2 Friday, September 15th

Why to watch: Toledo might be the best 0-2 team in the country. After a heartbreaking three-overtime loss to Iowa State, the Rockets inexplicably went into the tank against Western Michigan in a 31-10 loss that'll set them back big-time in the MAC race. The passing game has been there and the offense has the firepower to put up big points, but the losing slide has to stop now. On the flip side, Kansas has been mediocre at best beating Northwestern State and UL Monroe. If you can only beat ULM 21-19, there are issues. KU has bigger fish to fry ahead playing Nebraska in two weeks, so it needs this game and next week's tussle with South Florida to be ready.

Why Kansas might win: Yeah, it only played Northwestern State and UL Monroe, but the KU run defense appears to have reloaded with an aggressive front that's been great at getting into the backfield. Toledo has done next to nothing in the running game relying on Clint Cochran's arm to carry the offense. If he's inconsistent, like he was against Western Michigan, KU will come away with the win.

Why Toledo might win: Under Mark Mangino, Kansas has been awful on the road going just 3-17 with a win over Missouri in 2004, Wyoming in 2003, and Tulsa in 2002. Yeah, Toledo hasn't been able to run the ball, but it has the ability to bomb away if Cochran gets hot. Kansas couldn't handle Kinsmon Lancaster and the mighty Warhawk passing game last week and could get shredded to bits. The KU offense isn't exactly built to put points on the board in a hurry.

Who to watch: Kansas senior RB Jon Cornish has been the offense early on and he'll need to be a steady factor to keep the pressure off new starting QB Kerry Meier. Cornish is a former linebacker with good hands and a nice speed burst. With 243 yards and three touchdowns in the first two games, and 6.75 yard-per-carry average, he has been the team's MVP by far. For the Toledo offense, senior TE Chris Hopkins is making an early case for the Mackey Award after catching 13 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns against Iowa State and four catches for 100 yards against Western Michigan.
What will happen: How real is Kansas? Toledo is a tough test on the road with too much firepower for the Jayhawks to overcome if this gets into any sort of a shootout. Cochran will find his groove just in time to come away with the win.

            Six-Pack for Friday

Six things I'd do if I ran the Devil Rays

Even though I didn't go to an Ivy League school or Tulane, and am not a rich dude, I could run this sorry franchise as well as the Wall Street boys have this season. Here are six things I'd do to try and turn this pathetic franchise around.

-- Our plan will mimic what was done in Oakland; we'll take draft choices when free agents bolt, and use them to draft college pitchers, like A's did (Hudson, Mulder, Zito).

-- Devil Rays have to bring in a hitting coach who preaches patience at the plate, and our coaches in the minor leagues do the same thing. make the other pitchers work harder.

-- Trade Rocco Baldelli for a starting pitcher. He is talented, but fragile. He is good enough to bring back a solid starter to team with Kazmir, Shields, Hammel, Seo.

-- Elijah Dukes in the starting lineup, next April. Either we keep him or trade him for pitching, but he is a talent.

-- Lobby the commissioner's office heavily for one of two things: a switch to the National League, or……total geographic realignment of both leagues, which would get us in a division with teams more on our financial plane. .

-- Devil Rays need to show their fans and players that they are using creative methods to keep up with the big money teams. Dumping players on July 31 is no longer acceptable. I wound want the fans to have hope. Right now, they don't.

Friday's List of 13: In a perfect world.........

              13) Every major league baseball team would have to maintain a payroll of at least $40 million. Baseball will never have a salary cap, but a salary floor would at least insure that teams are trying to compete. If you can't afford $40 million, sell the team.

              12) College football would lose the goofy speed-up rules they put in this year, and simply not stop the clock after first downs. This would accomplish what they want, faster games.

              11) One PGA Tour event each year would be played with players carrying their own bags. Make it a big money event, so players will show. You'd be amazed at how much smaller the bags would become, and quickly.

              10) The NFL would stay out of Los Angeles. Three teams (Rams, Raiders, Chargers) have tried LA and left. Why does there have to be a team there?

              9) The NCAA tournament would be 64 teams, that's it. 64 is the right number, and no more than eight teams from one conference can get into the Field of 64.

              8) Baseball managers/coaches wouldn't wear uniforms. Players wear uniforms.

              7) NBA would adopt International Rules, making it more like basketball and less like street ball. Passing might become more popular than dribbling.

              6) College football games against I-AA competition wouldn't count towards bowl eligibility.

              5) Hockey clubs would raffle off Zamboni rides during games. What would be more cool than riding Zamboni in between periods of an NHL game?

              4) Networks would hire more ex-coaches as analysts. Guys who are ex-coaches think the game more and are more likely than ex-players to offer candid opinions.

              3) All NBA playoff series would be best-of-3, except for Finals (best-of-5). And one day each season, all NBA games would use the red, white and blue ball, to honor the ABA.

              2) If a school fires its coach because of his won-lost record, the players can transfer and immediately be eligible at their new school. Less coaches would get fired. Also, coaches can't bolt for greener pastures at another school unless their contract was up.

              1) No pro player would ever have more than the next two years guaranteed on his contract. Hungry players play better.

Dunkel - College Football (Friday info)

Dunkel write-up for tonight's NCAA football

                            Kansas at Toledo

It has not been the best of starts for the MAC as the conference has gone a disappointing 3-13 in non-conference games thus far. Tonight in front of an ESPN audience Toledo will try to improve on that as the Rockets host Big 12 opponent Kansas. But to do that Toledo will have to improve in some other areas first, including a defense that has given up 76 points in losses to Iowa State and Western Michigan. Also raising concern was QB Clint Cochran's inability to move the Rocket offense last week in the second half against Western Michigan as Toledo was outscored 24-0. While Kansas has not looked particularly sharp in wins over I-AA Northwestern State and Louisiana-Monroe, the Jayhawks are an improving program under coach Mark Mangino and have a productive offense led by QB Kerry Meier and RB Jon Cornish. That should help KU take advantage of a +4 Vegas line according to Dunkel, which has Kansas favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Kansas (+4).
