    Dunkel Index – NCAA Football

    THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

    Maryland at West Virginia
Coming off its impressive win over Georgia in last year's Sugar Bowl, West Virginia was expected by many to challenge for the national championship this season. Thus far the Mountaineers have not disappointed. Although the competition has been weak (Marshall and Eastern Washington), Rich Rodriguez' team has avoided the slips that have caught other teams off guard in the early going. Tonight the competition will increase a bit as WVU renews its rivalry with Maryland. But this is a Terp team that lost four of its last five at the end of last season and has not looked particularly overpowering in wins over I-AA William & Mary (27-14) and lower-rated Middle Tennessee St. (24-10). Against the ultra-quick backfield of Pat White and Steve Slaton in Morgantown, the Terps may have a tough time keeping it under the 16 1/2-point Vegas line according to Dunkel, which has the Mountaineers a slightly stronger favorite at 17 1/2. Dunkel Pick: West Virginia (-16 1/2). Here are all of this week's Division I games.

        Thursday's Game
Maryland covered 10 of its last 14 road games; they're 10-4-1 vs spread when facing West Virginia, but lost 31-19 at home to WV last year, as 3-pt favorite. Mountaineers are 5-9 vs spread in last 14 tries as home favorite; they have eight offensive starters from last year back. Terps were outgained 329-275 by MTSU a week ago, but Maryland was up 17-3 at half in 24-10 win. WVU is 9-0 in night games under Rodriguez. Mountaineers played I-AA foe last week, hammered Marshall week before, so hard to tell how sharp they are at this point.

          San Diego at Cincinnati
The Padres come into today riding the momentum of a 10-0 drubbing of Cincinnati last night that dealt the Reds' wild card chances a real blow. The Reds will have to regroup in short order today behind starter Aaron Harang, who is winless in his last three starts with a less than stellar 5.40 ERA. San Diego starter Clay Hensley continues to be a pleasant surprise as he has posted a 2.43 ERA over his last 10 starts covering 59 1/3 innings. The Padres look like a strong underdog play in this one according to Dunkel, which has San Diego favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: San Diego (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

            Hot streaks:

Kelvim Escobar (Los Angeles Angels) - If the Angels can`t catch the Oakland Athletics at the top of the NL West, it won`t be because of Escobar. The veteran starter has a 1.57 ERA in his last three starts without allowing a big fly. The Angels are -124 road favorites tonight against the Texas Rangers.

Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants) - Matt Cain is the hottest starting pitcher in baseball. Thankfully for the Giants, his start couldn`t come at a better time, with the Giants two games behind the San Diego Padres for the NL Wild Card. Cain hasn`t lost in over a month, and hasn`t given up an earned run in three outings. The Giants are -177 home favorites tonight against the Colorado Rockies.

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) - While Johan Santana gets all the press clippings, Bonser has quietly done his share of the cashing for Twins backers recently. Bonser has a 2.41 ERA in his last three trips to the hill with 19 strikeouts in 18 innings.

            Cold streaks:

Aaron Harang (Cincinnati Reds) - So much for being a Cy Young contender. Harang has won only two of his last nine starts, while sporting a 5.14 ERA for the Reds, which are priced as -113 home favorites today against the San Diego Padres.

Odalis Perez (Kansas City Royals) - Perez complained and got traded out of Los Angeles earlier this season. Now Royals backers are complaining about Perez`s woes on the mound lately. He has won only once since coming over to the Royals from the Dodgers on July 23. To make matters worse, Perez has posted a 14.59 ERA and horrible .507 OBP against in his last three starts. Kansas City are listed as +112 home underdogs tonight against the Seattle Mariners.

            Other notables:

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) - Wang has a 10-2 record at home this season with a 2.76 ERA.

              Line Watch

              Philadelphia at Atlanta: Braves -130

The Braves found out they wouldn’t win the NL East two nights ago during a rainout and their disappointment was obvious as they were swept by the Phillies in Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Atlanta’s blues could end tonight, however, with Chuck James taking the hill. The rookie southpaw has a 9-3 record this year, impressive in its own right, but he`s been lights-out over the last month. Since August 14, the Braves are 5-1 and up 4.48 units in James’ six starts, propelled by his awesome 2.03 ERA over those games.

Adding to the good news for Braves backers is the club`s stellar work from the team’s bullpen. Its 2.10 ERA over the last 10 games is less than half of what the Phillies’ pen has allowed over the same span of games.

Jamie Moyer pitches for the Phillies. Both home runs that Moyer has allowed as an NL pitcher were to the Braves a couple of weeks back, a no decision.

Los Angeles Angels at Texas: Angels (-1 ½) +125

It’s a pitching mismatch in Arlington tonight, despite Kelvim Escobar’s mediocre record for the Angels. He’s been the victim of poor support from his teammates, though they should find relief tonight when they face young Edinson Volquez.

The Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers are keeping a close eye on Volquez, who has already surpassed his 2005 innings pitched output. The team might not have to bother with a pitch count, however, as Volquez hasn’t pitched more than four innings in any of his last three starts.

The Rangers have generally fared well against its AL West rivals this year but they have a losing record against Los Angeles, largely thanks to the bat of Vladimir Guerrero. Vlad has impaled the Rangers for a career .443 average and since the start of 2003, he’s slugged .895 in Arlington.

Seattle Mariners at Kansas City Royals: Royals +115

The Mariners just fired their bench coach Ron Hassey as well as Dan Rohn, an administrative coach closely tied with player development. The team wanted Hassey to stick out the season, but lucky for him, he missed out on yesterday’s 10-0 home loss to the Blue Jays. Seattle fans should have been so lucky.

Speaking of Seattle fans, many feel that Rohn was the wrong man to get canned after his work with young players coming through Triple-A Tacoma. They’ve focused their collective wrath instead on manager Mike Hargrove, who is likely relieved to hit the road.

Kansas City is wrapping up a dismal season in winning form. They’re 7-4 in September and have been dogged every game, which means big bucks for backers: 8.7 units already this month.

They’re averaging 5.8 runs per game, compared to Seattle’s 3.3 and while their pitching leaves a little to be desired, the Royals give good value at home. Despite a 32-40 record in Kauffman Stadium this year, the team’s home backers have actually profited to the tune of 7.33 units.
