    Tuesday's List of 13

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...............

We'll start and finish with non-football notes, with all NFL in between……..
    13) For those of you who suggest that Minnesota's Johan Santana is overrated, know that Minnesota won his last 22 home starts; the last four years, he is 31-2 after August 1.

    12) When the Bills scored a TD 0:12 into their game Sunday, it was quickest an NFL team has ever scored a touchdown in their season opener.

    11) Patriots get a #1 for Deion Branch; Saints got a #4 for Donte Stallworth; I refuse to believe Branch is that much better than Stallworth, which is why the Patriots usually win, and New Orleans usually loses.

    10) Raiders were pathetic Monday night, are now 13-36 since losing Super Bowl to Gruden's Bucs three years ago.

In sixteen NFL games this weekend, a total of 52 offensive TDs were scored; average length of the drives was 64.3 yards

    9) Teams who enjoyed double digit edge in average starting field position (Rams, Bengals, Colts) were 3-0, thanks in part to combined +8 turnover ratio.

    8) Arizona had short TD drives of 5, 41 yards; they also won 16 of 23 third down plays (69.6%); only the Eagles (16 of 24) came close to that figure.

    7) Listening to Ron Pitts broadcast the Saints' game Sunday, you'd think he had a financial stake in Reggie Bush's career. Bush got credit for everything except the invention of wheel.

    6) Turnovers kill. Seven teams had 3+ turnovers; they all lost, by average of 13.3 points.

    5) Broncos played in AFC title game last year. At home. Their QB played error-free football all season; why did they see fit not only to draft a QB, but trade up for to get him? Nothing like undermining a guy in prime of his career. Sunday, Jake Plummer looked like the Snake who played for the Cardinals.

    4) Turnovers turn ugliness into gold; Rams were just 3-15 on third down, had 10 penalties for 94 yards, managed just three field goals in four trips to red zone (three of those drives started in Denver territory) yet they won, because NFL teams with +5 turnover ratios almost never lose. St Louis had 17-yd edge in average field position, a huge advantage.

    3) Rams and Seattle both won, but combined to score zero TDs on 21 drives, trying 12 field goals. Seahawks had two FGs blocked, Wilkins missed one when he hit upright. Cards scored 21 points in first quarter Sunday; last yr, they scored 27 points in first quarter all season (nine field goals).

    2) For the week, home teams were 4-12 vs spread, favorites
    6-10; under was 12-4.

    1) One last thought: How in the name of pete is it that Dave Gavitt is in Basketball Hall of Fame, but Jerry Tarkanian isn't?

              NFL Week 2 Trends September 11, 2006

Newcomers to Las Vegas sports betting parlors frequently inquire how they can determine which team is the home team. The normal response is that the home team is on the bottom.
During the first Sunday of the NFL regular season there were more than a few home teams that ended up on the bottom.

Visiting teams won nine of 13 on opening day and night and came away with the cash in 10 of 13. The only hosts to get the money were Detroit, Jacksonville and St. Louis. Five 'homers' failed to score a touchdown, including the victorious Rams who kicked six field goals.

Favorite bettors beat the pants of the bookmakers last season, but dog players held sway in Week 1. Underdogs got the money in nine of 13, though home pups were only 3-4.

Total players who leaned toward the 'under' had a banner opening day, with 10 of 13 tussles slipping below the number.

The second week of the season features several home teams that will be prohibitive favorites. Take a look at trends and angles on those games and the rest of the NFL schedule below.

              RAIDERS at RAVENS

Oakland has been a poor investment in an underdog role, failing to cash 26 of its last 39. Conversely, Baltimore is 16-7-1 as a home favorite and 11-3 as the chalk at M&T Bank Stadium. The Raiders have also failed to cash 26 of their last 34 conference battles. They have lost and failed in five straight on artificial turf as well. The Ravens have slipped 'under' in 13 of 18 versus teams from the AFC-West. Oakland has knuckled 'under' in five straight outings on phony grass.

              TEXANS at COLTS

Indianapolis will be shooting for its ninth straight win versus Houston. However, the Colts have only managed to split their last eight series spread decisions. Indianapolis has 'covered' 10 of its last dozen during the first month. The last three encounters at the RCA Dome have eclipsed the total. The Colts have been on the low side in five of six as favorites of seven to 13 points.

              BROWNS at BENGALS

Cincinnati has won three straight versus Cleveland (2-1 against the spread). The Bengals have fallen short in seven of their last 10 as home favorites and in 12 of 17 ATS at home overall. The Browns are 10-3 ATS on the road when the total is between 38-1/2 and 42. Cleveland has topped the total in five straight on the road against a division opponent with revenge on its plate.

              BILLS at DOLPHINS

Buffalo has won three of four versus Miami and 'covered' four straight. The Dolphins have failed in 13 of 15 as home favorites. Three of the last four series scrapes have been on the high side. Miami has zipped 'over' in six of eight when favored over the Bills. However, Buffalo has dipped 'under' in eight of its last nine as division road dogs.

              LIONS at BEARS

Chicago has cashed three straight against Detroit after coming up short in four of its previous five opportunities. The Bears are 6-2-1 in their last nine as favorites. The Lions have cashed nine of their last 13 as road dogs. Chicago has slipped 'under' in 12 of 17 at home. Detroit has been on the low side in 10 of 15 on grass and in 13 of 18 versus division rivals.

              PANTHERS at VIKINGS

Carolina has 'covered' 22 of its last 30 on the highway, getting the money in eight of 11 last year. The Panthers have won and cashed three straight versus Minnesota. They have also grabbed the cheese in eight of 10 off a home loss.

              GIANTS at EAGLES

Philadelphia will be looking to avenge a pair of SU and ATS losses at the hands of the New York Giants last season. The Eagles are 15-4 ATS seeking revenge for a close loss by seven points or less. New York has stumbled in 10 of its last 14 on grass ATS. The Giants are 24-11 ATS after out-rushing their previous opponent by 75 or more yards.

              BUCS at FALCONS

Tampa Bay has won three straight against Atlanta (2-0-1 ATS). The Bucs bounced back to 'cover' four of six as dogs in 2005 after posting a 2-7-1 mark in that role during 2004. The Falcons are 4-8-1 ATS recently versus division opposition. Tampa Bay has dipped 'under' in eight of 10 as road dogs of five points or more.

              SAINTS at PACKERS

Green Bay has floundered in 10 of its last 14 as home favorites and in 13 of 18 at Lambeau Field overall. New Orleans is 5-14 ATS coming off a road win. The Packers are 4-12 ATS following a loss by 10 points or more.

              RAMS at 49ERS

San Francisco has 'covered' three straight versus St. Louis, sweeping the season series in 2005, both SU and ATS. The Rams have dropped 13 of 17 as road favorites and failed to cash 11 of their last 16 in September. They are also 6-15 ATS following a non-conference contest.

              CARDS at SEAHAWKS

Seattle has won six of seven and cashed five of seven against Arizona. The Seahawks got the money in eight of 10 at home last season. The Cardinals have dropped 16 of their last 22 as road dogs and failed to get the green in 12 of their last 17 in September. The last four series shootouts have eclipsed the total. Arizona has been on the high side in 12 of 13 as road dogs of seven points or less. The Cards have also zipped 'over' in six of seven before playing the Rams. Seattle has blown 'over' at a 12-2 clip as favorites of six points or more.

              PATRIOTS at JETS

New England has 'covered' seven straight against the New York Jets at the Meadowlands (6-1 SU). The Patriots have also won the last six series encounters overall (5-1 ATS). New England is 14-4 ATS on artificial turf. The Patriots have cashed nine of their last 13 as road favorites and 29 of 42 as the chalk overall.

              TITANS at CHARGERS

Tennessee has suspect credentials on the road. The Titans have failed to get the money in 11 of their last 16 on the highway, in eight of their last dozen on grass and in nine of 13 as road short-enders. San Diego has ducked 'under' in six of its last seven when favored by double-digits.

              CHIEFS at BRONCOS

Denver has won and 'covered' five straight against Kansas City at Invesco Field. Eight of the last nine series confrontations have been on the high side. The Broncos have jumped the number in 21 of 26 at home when it was between 42 1/2 and 45. Denver has been on the low side in four of its last five at home versus division rivals.

              SKINS at COWBOYS

Washington won and 'covered' both 2005 meetings with Dallas. The Redskins are 21-4 as road dogs of 3 1/2 to seven points and they have cashed 12 of their last 18 as short-enders on the highway overall. The Cowboys have cashed 11 of 15 following a road setback. The last three clashes at Texas Stadium have knuckled 'under.' Washington has gone 'under' in 16 of its last 19 as division dogs.

              STEELERS at JAGUARS

Jacksonville looks to snap a four-game 'cover' skid on Monday Night Football and extend its three-game ATS winning streak versus Pittsburgh. The Steelers have 'covered' nine of 12 as underdogs and 18 of 27 on the road. The Jaguars are 14-5 ATS during the first two weeks of the season.

                        Hot streaks

Kenny Rogers (Detroit Tigers) - The Tigers are starting to lose their season-long hold on the American League Central division, but when Rogers takes the hill, they`re a little less worried. He`s 2-0 in his last three games with a 2.14 ERA to raise his season totals to 15-6 and 3.91. He`s 7-1 at home this season and is set as a -140 favorite against the Texas Rangers.

Derek Lowe (Los Angeles Dodgers) - The Dodgers have been leaning on guys like Lowe to hold down their postseason push and he`s been responding. He hasn`t been tagged for a loss since August 9 and hasn`t given up more than three earned runs in a game since July 29. He`s 9-5 in night games this season and will take on Sean Marshall and the Chicago Cubs tonight as a -154 favorite.

Andy Pettitte (Houston Astros) - After having his start pushed back a day to let his ankle rest, Pettitte will take the mound tonight for the up-and-down Astros. He`s been pitching well lately, going 2-0 in his last three games while averaging four strikeouts. He`s a +130 underdog when he takes on Jeff Weaver and the St. Louis Cardinals tonight.

                        Cold streaks

Mike Mussina (New York Yankees) - Mussina had his Sunday start pushed back two days due to soreness in his arm. He hasn`t put up a win since July 30 for the Yankees and has a 6.00 ERA his last three games. He`ll have a good chance to get back in the win column tonight against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as a -239 favorite.

Kyle Davies (Atlanta Braves) - Davies was nothing less than awful for the Braves early in the season and hasn`t gotten much better. In his last three starts he`s gone 0-2 with a 17.36 ERA. Oddsmakers have taken notice and made him a +111 underdog tonight against Randy Wolf and the Philadelphia Phillies.

                        Other notables

Josh Johnson (Florida Marlins) - 6-4 at home this season with a 3.36 ERA.

Chris Young (San Diego Padres) - 6-0 on the road this season and 8-4 in night games.

Ervin Santana (Los Angeles Angels) - 9-2 at home this season with a 3.17 ERA.

Jeremy Sowers (Cleveland Indians) - 6-1 in night games with a 3.03 ERA this season.

                          LINE WATCH

Houston at St. Louis – St. Louis –136

The Houston Astros were forced to juggle their pitching rotation late Monday night after veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte twisted his left ankle at batting practice on Saturday.

Pettitte was scratched from his scheduled start last night after complaining of discomfort but will take the mound today against the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I`d be lying if I said it was (100 percent)," Pettitte told the Houston Chronicle. "It`s definitely not, but it feels extremely well. We go out for batting practice and throw. I`ve been taking care of it, been icing it. It was a freak accident. ... I just rolled it running around in the outfield.”

Pettitte is 13-13 this season, winning five of his last 10 starts. The 34-year-old pitcher has been inconsistent all year keeping his record below .500 with a 4.34 ERA. Pettitte is 2-1 against the Cardinals this season with a 4.21 ERA.

Los Angeles at Chicago – Los Angeles –156

The Los Angeles Dodgers will hand the ball to right-hander Derek Lowe, hoping the streaking pitcher can get the team back on track after losing five of its last eight games.

Lowe, 14-8 with a 3.64 ERA, has gone 7-1-2 in his last 10 starts and has allowed only 10 runs in his last eight appearances.

"We`ve pressed him the last four or five days," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "He knows he`s at the top of his game and he`s proving it by going out and getting wins for us."

Lowe is 2-1 against the Cubs in his career with a 2.97 ERA.

Toronto at Seattle – Seattle –123

A quick look at Gil Meche’s record in his last 10 starts and bettors would pile the cash on the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. However, the Seattle Mariners starter can’t be blamed for his 1-4-5 record during that span.

Meche has allowed only five runs in his last three appearances for an ERA of just over two runs. The right-hander has pitched into at least the seventh during this span, but has fallen victim to a shaky bullpen.

The Mariners, who have the fourth best relief staff in the American League (3.74 ERA), have not been able to hold it together whenever Meche takes the hill. Seattle’s pen has spoiled Meche’s last three brilliant performances, posting a collective 9.47 ERA in those contests.

                            Dunkel Index - MLB

                            TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

                            Colorado at San Francisco
The Giants are making a move in both the wild card and NL West as Felipe Alou's team has won 10 of its last 15. A part of that has been the contribution of rookie pitcher Jonathan Sanchez (3-0, 1.42). Sanchez picked up a win in his first MLB start last Wednesday as he struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings while allowing only one run. Against a Colorado team that has dropped 13 of its last 15 on the road, Sanchez and the Giants look like a solid play to cover the run line in this one according to Dunkel, which has San Francisco favored by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: San Francisco (-1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
