Vikings @ Redskins- Washington had awful preseason, losing Portis in opener, then getting drilled 41-0 by Patriots, but all that is forgotten with win here vs new-look Vikings, led by former Eagle offensive coordinator Childress. Minnesota lost four of last five visits to DC; five of their last 17 series games were in playoffs. Vikings lost three of last four Monday night games, but covered seven of ten as dog on Monday night. Skins are 2-7 in last nine Monday games, but they won last four home openers, by 8,3,6,2 pts. Childress has gone up against Redskins twice a year with Eagles, while Skins learning Saunders' new offense. This game has been bet down from 7 to 4.5 during summer.

Chargers @ Raiders- Rivers finally makes Charger debut, after two years on bench; Bolts won last five game vs rival Raiders, winning by average score of 29-14; three of their last four series wins were by 13+ points. Oakland is 7-0 in last seven Week 1 home games (1-10 on road) and 14-4 in last 18 home openers, but they have new coach, new QB and are just 7-15 in last 22 Monday games, 0-3 in last three (outscored 89-27). Last three Oakland home openers stayed under total. Chargers outscored Oakland 61-24 in two games last year, scoring six TDs on 21 drives, despite a -1 turnover ratio- they forced 10 3-and-outs on Raiders' 21 drives in those two games.

          List Of 13

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up Sunday in the NFL

          13) Best thing about Colt-Giant game being played is that it won't happen again until 2010; how many home movies of the Manning kids can we see? Enough already.............

          12) In first six years since Michael Irvin retired, six different guys have led the Cowboys in receptions.

          11) Why do the Lions wear black jerseys at home? Shouldn't they at least score a TD before they wear black?

          10) Something for Carl Pavano, Rocco Baldelli to think about: Jimmy Kennedy broke his hand in the first quarter Sunday, and was back on field for the Rams before halftime.

          9) Cardinals are fun to watch; they have terrific offense, their defense is horrible, and now they have fans at home. 49ers were 0-9 on third down Sunday, and still scored 27 points.

          8) If the Giants had to do all over again, think they'd sell the farm to acquire Eli Manning? Me either.

          7) Some NFL henchman claimed on ESPN Sunday morning that gambling had little to do with the NFL's popularity; who is he kidding? Some states still consider fantasy football to be a form of gambling- the league openly endorses it though.

          6) Packers were blanked for first time since '91; lets not pull plug on the Pack until their home game vs New Orleans next week- they beat the Saints 52-3 last season. Lot of teams do lousy against Chicago's defense, but if they loser at home to the Saints, well then, thats a serious problem.

          5) How in good conscience can Tennessee start Kerry Collins when he wasn't even with team until two weeks ago? Would it be that stupid just to let Vince Young play?

          4) Falcons ran ball for 252 yards Sunday, drubbing Carolina, and exorcising some demons from their sorry finish last year.

          3) In the nine early games Sunday, eight home teams trailed at halftime, six by 9+ points. Only the Rams led. Buffalo was the only Week 1 loser who led their game at halftime. Home sides were just 4-10 vs spread, favorites 5-9, under 10-4. AFC, NFC teams split their six games SU.

          2) Five of the thirteen home teams that played Sunday didn't score a touchdown. Not good.

          1) Remember, there is tendency to overreact to Week 1 scores it is a long season. Now, if your favorite team goes 0-2, then panic could be a viable option.

MLB top five: September over teams

September is stretch time in the major leagues, full of hotly contested games that are dominated by lights out pitching and grinding, low-scoring baseball.

                Yeah right.

The following are five teams that are doing their best to disprove that theory as the season heads into its final three weeks.

                Colorado Rockies – 9-1 O/U over their last 10

Well, you can throw all that talk about Coors Field becoming a pitcher’s ballpark out the window.

The Colorado Rockies have been knocking the stuffing out of the ball lately, averaging 10 runs in three straight home games this week. Coincidentally, the over easily cashed in all three games.

It’s not just at home where the Rockies have been lining over bettors’ pockets. They also took the money in five of Colorado’s last six road games. However, that seems to be more a case of books setting the totals too low as the team played in Los Angeles and San Diego.

But bettors can probably expect books to continue making the same mistakes when the Rockies travel to play the San Francisco Giants this week. Oddsmakers haven’t set a total over nine runs in San Fran’s last 10 home games. The O/U is 3-6-1 in those games.

                Chicago Cubs – 8-1-1 O/U over their last 10

The Chicago Cubs are just counting down the days until the season ends.

That`s the impression you get from watching the Cubbies’ last 10 games. The team has gone just 2-8 and cashed in the over in eight of those contests.

The biggest issue seems to be a starting rotation that follows up hard-throwing Venezuelan Carlos Zambrano with the likes of Juan Mateo, Rich Hill and Sean Marshall.

Still, oddsmakers have kept the numbers relatively low, setting a total of 10 or more just once during Chicago’s last 10 games. If the books continue this practice there could be solid value in the over as the team hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds this week.

                Oakland A’s – 7-2-1 O/U over their last 10

How does MLB`s worst offensive team play over in seven of its last 10 games? By hitting .319, including .345 off of right-handers.

Of course, it also helps when you’re the Oakland A’s and you average 5.7 runs against four of the American League’s worst pitching teams in the Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Expect that to change this week with the A’s traveling to Minnesota to take on the Twins before returning home to host the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Indians.

                Pittsburgh Pirates – 7-2-1 O/U over their last 10

The Pittsburgh Pirates have not been doing anything particularly bad during their last 10 games.

But they haven’t been doing anything particularly well either and as a result it’s hard to get a read on how the Pirates will perform. One game their pitching will falter, giving up nine runs to the Cincinnati Reds, only to come back the next night and give up only four runs.

The same thing holds true for their offense and as a result the total scores are consistently in the nine to 11-run range.

The goods news is that it`s tough for oddsmakers to read them too. If they continue to set totals under 10 runs, then there’s a good chance the Pirates will continue to play over.

                Baltimore Orioles – 7-3 O/U over their last 10

The Baltimore Orioles` recent over run may be a bit deceiving.

After a streak that saw the over cash in five straight games, the Orioles have played under in three of their last five contests. The biggest reason is the pitching staff has settled down, giving up only 4.2 runs over the last five games, one run less than their season average of 5.27 runs.

But is this improvement for real? The Orioles starters will receive a serious test as they finish off a four-game set with the New York Yankees Monday before welcoming the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox have averaged 8.1 runs in nine meetings with the Orioles this season. The O/U is 6-2-1 in those games.

                    Dunkel MLB 9/11

                    Houston at St. Louis

Runs have been hard to come by against Chris Carpenter at home. In his last three starts at Busch, Carpenter has allowed just two runs on nine hits over 25 innings for a miniscule 0.72 ERA. Tonight he'll face Houston's Andy Pettitte, whose numbers over his last five starts (1.84 ERA) are equally impressive. With these two veterans squaring off in a game with playoff atmosphere, the Vegas run total of 8 looks high according to Dunkel, which has the total at 7.

                    Dunkel Pick: Under.

                      Hot streaks

Randy Johnson (New York Yankees) - The Yankees are closing in on the postseason and Randy Johnson has been helping the cause. He`s 9-4 when pitching away from the Bronx, and he`s 2-1 in his last three starts. He takes on Kris Benson and the Baltimore Orioles, a team he`s beaten three times in three starts this season, as a -167 favorite.

Anibal Sanchez (Florida Marlins) - Coming off a no-hitter, Sanchez looks to keep rolling and boost his season win total to eight. He`s gone 2-0 in his last three with a 1.23 ERA and is 4-1 at home this season. The Marlins hope he can knock off the National League best New York Mets tonight as a -109 favorite and keep pace with the Padres in the Wild Card chase.

Andy Pettitte (Houston Astros) - The Astros are losing ground in the National League Wild Card chase quickly, but when Pettitte takes the mound they`re likely to keep pace. He`s 2-0 in his last three starts with a 2.79 ERA while giving up just one homer. He`s 10-7 in night games this season and will be in tough tonight against Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals as a +154 underdog.

                      Cold streaks

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - When the Braves are struggling, one bright spot usually remains: John Smoltz. However, he`s stumbled somewhat in his last three outings, going just 1-2 with a 5.21 ERA while surrendering almost two walks per game. The Braves hope pitching at home will get him back on track tonight against the Chicago Cubs as a -198 favorite.

Carlos Silva (Minnesota Twins) - The Twins are making moves up the American League Central division, sitting just two games back of the Tigers. They currently hold the Wild Card spot, but with Carlos Silva on the hill tonight, they may suffer a setback. He`s 8-13 on the season with a 6.30 ERA and hasn`t registered a win since Aug. 5 against the Royals. Oddsmakers have made him a -114 favorite tonight against Joe Blanton and the Oakland A`s.

                      Other notables

Dave Williams (New York Mets) - 3-1 on the road and in night games this season.

Chris Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals) - 13-6 season record, 6-3 at home with a 1.60 ERA.

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) - 8-6 in night games with a 3.72 ERA this season.

Line Watch - Mon. Sep. 11

Oakland at Minnesota – Twins –114
                        Joe Mauer is all right.

The Minnesota Twins reiterated that to the media Sunday, shooting down rumors he was playing with a broken finger.

“It’s just bruised, not broken,” Mauer told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Of course, Mauer also helped dispel the rumors by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the team’s 12-1 win over the Detroit Tigers as a –175 favorite.

But it’s not just Mauer who has been swinging a hot bat in Minnesota this season. All told, the team is hitting .300 at home, a main reason why the team is 48-23 at home this season.

This record includes a three-game sweep of the Oakland A’s when these teams hooked up at the Metrodome in early April.

New York Mets at Florida – Marlins –109

You don`t get such a low price for a pitcher coming off a no-hitter very often.

Florida Marlins youngster Anibal Sanchez tossed a complete-game, no-no in the Marlins’ 2-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks as a –161 favorite last Wednesday night.

“This is the best moment of my life,” the 22-year old Venezuelan told reporters after the career night. “You never think that`s going to happen.”

In reality though, no one should be overly surprised given Sanchez’s form this season. In 14 games, the right-hander is 7-2 with a 2.89 ERA including a current four-game winning streak in which the pitcher has given up a total of four runs while lasting an average of 7 1/3 innings per start.

Toronto at Seattle – Mariners –109

The Seattle Mariners are still playing for something.

Sitting in last place in the AL West, the Mariners sit just four games back of the Texas Rangers for third place after taking two of three from their division rival over the weekend.

“You always play for something,” left fielder Raul Ibanez told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. “You always try to beat the team you`re playing every day. So third place is important. No one wants to finish dead last.”

It is this kind of thinking that has seen the M’s win 12 of their last 18 games.

Unfortunately for their backers, the Toronto Blue Jays don’t share the same commitment. The Jays, firmly entrenched in third in the AL East, have lost eight of their last 13 games and lost two of three versus the Anaheim Angels to begin their west coast road trip.

Total Watch - Mon. Sep. 11

                        Blue Jays at Mariners
                        (Over 9 -115)

Seattle lefty Jake Woods faces the Blue Jays for the first time as a starter tonight.

Toronto leads the AL in batting against left-handers with a .290 team average and smacked Woods around for three runs in 4 1/3 innings when he was coming out of the pen earlier this year.

Ted Lilly starts for the Jays and he has a 5.08 ERA in 13 road starts this year. Lilly has a 5.10 ERA in six career starts in Seattle.

                        Yankees at Orioles
                        (Under 9 ½ –101)

If Randy Johnson’s last start is any indication, the Big Unit is ready for the playoffs.

Johnson dominated the Kansas City Royals on Sept. 6, allowing just one hit and no runs in seven innings of work while striking out eight and walking just two batters.

“It looked easy for him,” Yankees manager Joe Torre told reporters after the Sept. 6 game. “He was ahead in a lot of counts and he got a lot of easy outs.”

In his last three starts, Johnson has a 3.13 ERA.

                        Cubs at Braves
                        (Under 8 ½ –118)

John Smoltz will have the working conditions he prefers when he faces the Cubs in Atlanta tonight.

The veteran right-hander has a 3.08 ERA at home this year, compared to 4.23 on the road. Smoltz has a 2.70 ERA in his last four home starts.

Smoltz has also been a better pitcher at night than he’s been during the day this year – he has a 3.47 ERA in the evening compared to 4.08 during daytime outings.

The Cubs offense is struggling too. They’ve scored just eight runs in their last three games. Slugger Derek Lee sat out Sunday’s game with a sore hand after going hitless in seven at bats in the first two games of the four-game series.

                        Brewers at Pirates
                        (Over 8 ½ -115)

Both the Brewers Doug Davis and the Pirates Zach Duke might be a bit nervous tonight.

Davis has a 7.36 ERA in four starts against Pittsburgh and has a 4.71 ERA in 15 starts against the Pirates over his career. It doesn’t help that Pittsburgh has the second best batting average in the NL against left-handers this year, batting .289 as a team.

Duke sports a 4.76 ERA in four starts against Milwaukee in 2006, and allowed eight runs in just 2 1/3 innings against the Brewers on July 24.

                            Hot Or Not

                            Who’s Hot …

                            WAC Running Backs
Boise State sophomore Ian Johnson is currently second in the country, behind Garrett Wolfe of Northern Illinois, with 329 yards averaging 9.4 yards per carry with a nation-leading seven scores after blowing up Oregon State for 240 yards and five touchdowns in the 42-14 win. He ran for 89 yards and two touchdowns in the opener against Sacramento State. Fresno State's Dwayne Wright is third in the nation with 312 yards after righting for 154 against Oregon and 158 against Nevada. San Jose State' Yonus Davis has 217 yards after tearing off a career-high 184 in the 35-34 win over Stanford.

Syracuse LB Kelvin Smith and Pitt LB H.B. Blades
The Big East has two linebackers in Pitt's H.B. Blades and Syracuse's Kelvin Smith who are among the nation's leading tackles and are playing up to their All-America potential. Smith started off the season with 16 stops against Wake Forest and made 13 on Saturday in the loss to Iowa. Blades started off the year with 13 tackles against Virginia and made 14, ten solo, in the 33-15 win over Cincinnati.

                            The Sun Belt
Even though the league only came up with one win, the traditional doormat for college football's rich and powerful showed that it's not just a league of cupcakes after, arguably, its best week ever. UL Lafayette got destroyed by Texas A&M 51-7 and Arkansas State and Florida Atlantic were crushed, but North Texas beat SMU 24-6, UL Monroe pushed Kansas in a 21-19 loss, FIU couldn't hang on late against South Florida losing 21-20, Middle Tennessee pushed Maryland in a 24-10 loss, and Troy gave Florida State all it could handle in a 24-17 loss.

                            Boston College vs. Clemson
These Atlantic Division foes have come up with a brilliant last two games. Boston College beat Clemson in a 16-13 overtime thriller last year, and this year won a 34-33 double-overtime classic that set the early standard for the year's best game. You have to go back to 1983 for the time these two played before being ACC brothers with Clemson winning 31-16, but the year before, the two tied 17-17 for one of two blemishes on a 9-1-1 Tiger season.

                            Tennessee QB Erik Ainge
The poster boy for the flop that was the 2005 Tennessee season, Ainge currently leads the nation in passing efficiency with a 226.6 rating; over 12 points higher than the number two man, Pitt's Tyler Palko, Against Cal and Air Force, Ainge has completed 35 of 37 passes for 624 yards and seven touchdown with two interceptions. He's leading the nation with a whopping 13.28 yards per attempt. Thanks go out to WR Rober Meachem and offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe..

                            Who’s Not …

                            Illinois on the road
On November 23rd, 2002, Illinois beat Northwestern 31-24 in Evanston. Since then, the Illini have lost 16 straight away from Champaign by a combined score of to 514 to 149 after getting blasted 33-0 by Rutgers this weekend.

                            Navy's passing attack
Everyone knows Navy has a devastating rushing attack, currently ranking fourth in the nation, but there needs to be some semblance of a passing game, doesn't there? In the first two games against East Carolina and Massachusetts, Navy has completed three of 13 passes for 27 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception for a nearly impossible passer rating of 25.16. UL Lafayette is 118th in the nation with a rating of 25.16.

Non-USC Pac 10 teams on the road
A week after Washington State was crushed at Auburn and Cal was pantsed by Tennessee, the Pac 10 didn't exactly step up in the national respect department this week after Washington lost at Oklahoma 37-20, Stanford lost at San Jose State 35-34, Oregon State got humiliated at Oregon State 42-14, and Arizona got blasted at LSU 45-3. Fortunately for the league, Oregon survived at Fresno State 31-24.

                            Stanford's run defense
No one thought much when Oregon, led by Jonathan Stewart, rolled over Stanford for 298 yards and four touchdowns. After all, Oregon might be the Pac 10's second best team behind USC. But San Jose State was able to tear off 342 yards and four scores on the lowly Cardinal defense in a stunning 35-34 win. The nation's worst run defense has a wee bit of a challenge next week: Navy.

                            Florida State's running game
Things were supposed to change this year in Tallahassee with a more balanced offense on the way. The Noles netted a whopping one yard in the opener against Miami, and then came up with 45 yards on the ground in 28 carries in the way-too-close 24-17 win over Troy. Only Hawaii's running game currently ranked lower. Next week for the Noles is Clemson and its 31st ranked run defense.
