My top 5 for the Nextel Cup...............

          1. Matt Kenseth - Momentum plays a huge part in Nascar and and Kenseth has been 1 of top 2 hottest drivers lately. The #17 may have the best pit crew in the garage and those valuable seconds he will gain on pit road could be the difference in getting out in clean air and running well or getting in traffic and strugging with the handling of the car. The remaining schedule sets up well for the #17 team as he has ran well at all the mile and a half tracks (Charlotte, Atlanta, Texas) as well as running in the top 5 at both Kansas and Homestead last year. Their plate program has been strong this year, so if he can stay out of the "Big One" at Talladega, he should have a strong finish. He has won at Dover earlier this year so he should be good there. The one question mark for the #17 team is Martinsville. They have never been very good there historically. He had a good car there in the spring but wrecked out with about 7 laps to go relegating him to a 30ish something finish.

          2. Kevin Harvick - The 2nd hottest driver on the circuit carries a nice win from Richmond with him going into the chase. Like I said with Kenseth, momentum is everything this sport. Harvick along with Jeff Burton have turned the RCR program around this year. I don't think anyone would have expected for Harvick to have the kind of year he has had. He finished the flatter mile and a halfs last year 24th (Kansas) and 8th (Homestead) but I don't know how much weight you can put on it with the gains the RCR team has made this year. He won at Phoenix early this year so he should be strong there. He is a good short track racer, so he should be strong at Martinsville as well. The mile and a halfs are a big question mark for this team as he had one good run at Texas (5th) with two sub par runs at Atlanta and Charlotte. It will be interesting to see down the stretch when the pressure's turned up just how happy go lucky Harvick will be.

          3. Kasey Kahne - Now that Kahne has gotten the pressure of making the chase off his back, he and the #9 team can make some noise. He has wins this year on all of the mile and a half tracks at Charlotte, Atlanta, and Texas. Team director Kenny Francis has been in the chase all 3 years (previous 2 with Jeremy Mayfield) so he obviously knows how to build some fast race cars. He enters this chase with much better talent behind the wheel with Kahne, who has a series high 5 wins this year. I think Kahne will be strong on the flatter tracks of Kansas and Homestead as he won on the 2 mile flatter tracks of Michigan and California. I think Kahne's biggest concern is at Talladega, where he is not a very polished restrictor plate racer. With the help of Elliot Sadler though, they may be able to work their way to the front with Evernham power under the hood.

          4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. - The #8 team has won at 6 of the 10 tracks on the chase in their history and are on the verge of breaking through at Martinsville. He ran well at Atlanta with a 3rd and decent at Texas and Charlotte with a pair of 11th place finishes. He had a strong car at Loudon before losing an engine early in the race. He drove a torn up race car to a 4th place finish at Martinsville after being in a 1st lap altercation. He has never ran well at Homestead, which will be where the chase is decided, and that will hurt him. He has also struggled at Kansas coming home 34th in last year's race there. I wasn't sure how well the #8 team would react to the pressure of dropping out of the top 10 in points after back to back 43rd place finishes, but they remained focused and calm and have brought good cars to the track to make the chase. He is always a favorite at Dega where he has 5 career wins to his credit.

          5. Jimmie Johnson - The #48 team, led by crew chief Chad Knaus, could be the best in the garage. They respond to adversity better than anyone else and manage to salvage decent finishes out of near catastrophes and his 0 DNF's on the year back that up. Once again though, it seems like the 48 team is limping into the chase with not a lot of momentum. I think it is going to take someone to jump up and win some races to take the Nextel Cup this year. Jimmie Johnson owns Lowe's Motor Speedway, so look for him to pick up a victory there to keep pace in the chase. He owns 2 restrictor plate race victories this year, including one at Talladega, so look for him to run up front with teammate Jeff Gordon there. He owns a victory at Martinsville in the fall of '04 so he will be strong there. He ran 6th at Kansas last year and has had some success at Homestead running 2nd behind race winner Greg Biffle in '04.
