Line Watch - MLB Fri. Sep. 8
New York Yankees at Baltimore: Yankees -115
The scary thing about this game is the absence of Mariano Rivera, who’s still on the shelf with an elbow injury. You’ve got Cory Lidle on the hill – a starter who’s done enough to grind out wins for the Yanks, but not exactly an iron man. Since he arrived in New York, Lidle has not once lasted to see the seventh-inning stretch and without Rivera in the bullpen, that leaves a lot of uncertainty in the late innings.
But the tempting thing about this game is the price. Against a team that’s 22 ½ games behind them in the standings, you’d expect a little more chalk on the Bombers – especially since Baltimore’s starter, Erik Bedard, hasn’t been the money man he was earlier in the season.
It would be nice if there weren’t questions in the bullpen, but when you’re talking about a team that’s hitting .316 over its last 10 games, pitching isn’t everything.
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati: Reds -135
There’s only one stat that matters in this game and if you haven’t clued in yet, it’s Pittsburgh’s record on the road. In case you haven`t heard, they are an embarrassing 21-51 away from Pittsburgh, which explains why they’re going so cheap today against a team that has won only two of its last 10 games.
True, the Pirates took one game in each of their two previous series in Cincinnati this summer, but Great American Ballpark isn’t an easy place to win if you can’t keep the ball in the yard. And Ian Snell, who takes the ball for the Bucs today, has given up 15 homers in his last 12 games.
Toronto at Los Angeles Angels: Angels -102
A.J. Burnett threw a gem in his last outing, but that’s not a good sign for Jays fans today. Saturday’s 5-1 win over Boston marked the second time this season the high-priced Toronto starter pitched a complete game. The first occasion was shutout win over Washington in June, but the notoriously inconsistent right-hander tarnished that brilliant outing with an ugly 11-6 loss to Philadelphia as a -219 favorite in the very next start.
You can’t help but think Burnett is due for another letdown today. He’s thrown at least 114 pitches in his last three outings and, as strong as his arm is, you have to be careful with Burnett as the nights get a little colder.

Streaking Pitchers - Fri. Sep. 8
Hot streaks
Roy Oswalt (Houston Astros) - Oswalt scattered three hits and one walk while striking out nine in 7 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday in Houston`s 2-1 victory over the New York Mets. The right-hander carried a perfect game into the seventh, but lost it on an infield single by Jose Reyes. Oswalt, a -109 road favorite today, is 10-6 with a 3.37 ERA in 19 starts against the Brewers.
John Maine (New York Mets) - Maine looks to run his unbeaten string to nine straight starts for New York. On Saturday, he showed good form from the start, sitting down the first 12 batters and in the end, he allowed only two hits in a 4-2 victory in Houston. The Mets are -151 favorites against the Dodgers.
Scott Olsen (Florida Marlins) - Olsen looks to win his fourth straight start after allowing just three earned runs in 21 innings to win his last three outings. He is coming off one of the best starts of his brief career. Olsen threw seven shutout innings while giving up just one hit and striking out seven in a 10-3 win over Milwaukee on Sunday. The Marlins are -122 home favorite today against the Phillies.
Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants) - Cain will look to continue his hot streak for the Giants. The 21-year-old is 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA in his last four starts and limited the Chicago Cubs to an unearned run while striking out seven in 7 2/3 innings of a 4-2 win. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts against the Padres this season and is a -108 favorite today against Padres ace Jake Peavy.
Cold streaks
Angel Guzman (Chicago Cubs) - Guzman makes his ninth start of the season for Chicago, but is still seeking his first major league win. He is 0-3 with a 18.00 ERA in three road starts this season, allowing opponents to hit .471. Chicago is a +180 underdog today in Atlanta.
Odalis Perez (Kansas City Royals ) - Perez is trying to avoid losing his third straight start for the +136 Royals. The left-hander allowed five runs and a season-high 11 hits over seven innings in a 5-3 loss to the White Sox on Saturday.
Other notables
James Shields (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - Shields tries to extend his personal winning streak to three games and improve his record at Tropicana Field to 5-2.
Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers) - Millwood has won four straight over the Mariners after losing his first career start against them.
