    Six-Pack for Tuesday

-- ESPN demoted Ron Franklin so Mike Patrick could take his place on college football? What imbecile decided that?

-- Ryan Howard has 25 homers in his last 51 games. Wow.

-- Florida Marlins are first team ever to get to .500 after they were twenty games below .500. Now they're over .500.

-- Monday night, when Delgado made an error at first base, it was first error they've made behind Steve Trachsel this season, in 26 starts (146.1 IP). Pretty amazing.

-- The new college football rule, where clock starts after a change of possession but before a play is run, makes very little sense. It hurts the chance for a late comeback.

-- Many thanks to our horse handicappers, who put in a lot of work sending us selections. Picking the ponies is dicey stuff. We look forward to their Breeders' Cup selections.

Tuesday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy weekend..........

    13) It is kind of sad that Miami Hurricanes have seven losses in last 2+ years, and Larry Coker is under fire. Guy has a 53-10 record, and people would like to see him ousted. Amazing.

    12) Labor Day seems too early for Florida State-Miami; much too big a game to be played this early in season.

    11) Two teams ran ball 51 times for combined total of 3 yards; neither team had 10 first downs in the game. Total of 310 yds were gained in the game. A fierce defensive struggle.

    10) Wake Forest, San Diego State already lost their QBs for the season. Aztecs looked like they have competent sub, but Deacons have to go with a redshirt freshman. Whoops.

    9) TCU's QB got hurt when they trailed 7-3 at Baylor, but in came Marcus Jackson, who promptly went 11-13/148 with two TD's, saving day for the Horned Frogs. Good to have quality backups, especially under center.

    8) Jose Hernandez was pinch-hitting for Phillies Monday with bases loaded in tie game in 9th inning; he dodged pitch that would have ended game, had it hit him. The fans booed him.

    7) Line in Dolphin-Steeler game is now even, after Big Ben's latest operation became public. Steelers had been -4.

    6) Last time Florida State won in Miami by three points or less was way back in 1971, before either team was any good.

    5) One thing about Bobby Bowden; you ask him a question, you're going to get a direct answer. He seems a lot younger than 77 years old.

    4) Why was Edgerrin James in Miami Monday night? Don't the Arizona Cardinals practice this week?

    3) Braves, Phillies played doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday; you figure they'd be tired Monday; of course, they both went out and won their games.

    2) Red Sox got Ramirez, Varitek and Nixon back on same day, but it won't be enough to save their season. When White Sox put McCarthy in to pitch Monday, I actually said: "This is a bad park for him. Gives up lot of fly balls." Pena immediately took him deep and ended the game. Good call by me.

    1) Don't forget to log on to this website every day; it is now football season, and every game is going to be analyzed, on either the NFL page or the college football page. We have the CFL, baseball, and the NHL starts in a few weeks!!!!!

          STREAKING PITCHERS 9/5

          Hot streaks:

Chris Young (San Diego Padres) - The 6-foot-10 right-hander is undefeated in his last three starts with a 1.93 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. Young is averaging over a strikeout per inning over that span for the Padres, set as -128 home favorites tonight against the Colorado Rockies.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - Surprise, surprise. The AL Cy Young front runner hasn`t lost a game in over two months for the Twins, who are huge -245 favorites on the road tonight in Tampa Bay. If that`s not hot enough for you, Santana has a 1.71 ERA since August 16 and he`s given up only two walks in his last 21 innings.

Dontrelle Willis (Florida Marlins) - The Marlins are -173 favorites tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks because of the D-Train`s steam. Willis is 2-0 in his last three outings with a 2.14 ERA.

          Cold streaks:

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) - Lackey has a brutal 6.35 ERA since August 15 with an even worse .442 OBP against and 2.06 WHIP. Despite the big Texan`s best (or maybe worst) efforts, the Angels head into their game tonight against the Baltimore Orioles as -166 home favorites.

Mark Hendrickson (Los Angeles Dodgers) - The Dodgers are slim -108 favorites in Milwaukee tonight against the Brewers in no part because of Hendrickson. When he hasn`t been falling off the mound, Hendrickson has been racking up some horrible stats. The lanky left-hander has a 7.30 ERA over his last three starts while giving up 19 hits in 12 innings.

Jeremy Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) - Bonderman hasn`t won a game since July 24 for the Tigers, yet he`s still getting enough respect to be a -161 favorite tonight at home against the Seattle Mariners. Bonderman has a 7.16 ERA in his last three appearances with a .429 OBP against and a 2.20 WHIP.

          Other notables:

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - Smoltz is 10-6 at night this season with a 3.47 ERA.

Andy Pettitte (Houston Astros) - Pettitte is 5-7 away from Minute Maid Park in 2006 with a 5.13 ERA.

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - Halladay is 1-2 in his last three outings with a 3.91 ERA.

              Dunkel Index – MLB

              Tuesday September 5, 2006

              Atlanta at NY Mets
While Dave Williams can't find a steady spot in the rotation, moving back-and-forth between the Mets and Triple-A Norfolk, he has has been effective when called upon (2-0, 3.79 ERA). He'll look to build on that tonight for New York, which will try to erase the memory of last night's effort in which they accounted for just one hit against rookie Chuck James and a reliever. The Mets come in a Vegas underdog facing Atlanta's John Smoltz, but a steady performance out of Williams combined with a more-focused New York attack should make New York a solid play according to Dunkel, which has the Mets favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: NY Mets (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                    MLB Line Watch Tues. Sep.5

Arizona at Florida – Arizona +163

Florida Marlins manager Joe Girardi will play the role of coach two times today.

His wife Kim will hopefully give birth to their third child in time for Girardi to make it back to Dolphins Stadium for the start of the Marlins game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“It doesn`t bother me. We have to multitask in life,” Girardi told the Miami Herald. “I`m extremely excited we`re having a baby. I can`t wait.”

This distraction takes place at the wrong time for Florida. The Marlins are heading into this crucial series with Arizona two games out of the National League Wild Card spot, winning eight of its last 10 games.

New York at Kansas City – Kansas City +199

After missing the last two weeks due to a strained groin, Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina will return to the mound tonight in Kansas City. However, Mussina will be alone on the bump without closer Mariano Rivera to back him up.

Rivera will sit out the next four games due to an elbow strain that has bothered him the last month of the season. Rivera hasn’t pitched since last Thursday and underwent an MRI last week.

Mussina has only pitched into the seventh twice in his last 10 starts and will wear a protective strap to limit the strain on his still ailing groin.

“It`s going to take a game or two,” Mussina told Newsday. “We`re not starting over from zero, obviously ... But I`m not going out there [tonight] counting pitches. I`m going out there to pitch.”

Texas at Oakland – Oakland -123

Much like a boxer punches himself out of a fight, Adam Eaton throws himself out of games.

The Rangers right-hander averages 18.28 pitches per inning this season and has only gone more than five innings three times in eight starts this season. Eaton is averaging 4.4 innings per game, going 4-4 with a 4.71 ERA.

"My assessment of my performance: not very good," Eaton told reporters. "It`s a real frustrating feeling."

Eaton threw 83 pitches in three innings the last time he faced Oakland, allowing four runs on six hits in a 3-5 loss to the Athletics

MLB Total Watch Tues. Sep. 5

Atlanta at New York Mets – Under 9

Shawn Green just can’t get his swing right.

That’s the New York Mets outfielder’s excuse for a slump that has seen him bat just .179 with no home runs since being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks 11 games ago.

“The first couple of games, maybe I was trying too hard,” Green told New York’s Newsday. “As for the last two, I just didn`t swing the bat well.”

Fortunately, Green’s slump had little affect on the Mets’ offense through the first nine games but has caught up with the team since losing centerfielder Carlos Beltran two games ago. New York has scored only one run in back-to-back losses to the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros.

And it won’t help now that the Mets will be facing John Smoltz tonight. The Atlanta ace has given up just a total of four runs while lasting an average of 6 2/3 innings in two starts versus New York this season.

Los Angeles at Milwaukee – Over 9

The Los Angeles Dodgers can’t wait to get their bats on Doug Davis.

But the left-hander shouldn’t take it as a personal attack, it’s just the Dodgers have made mince meat of southpaws lately, batting .307 against them over their last 10 games.

It was this hitting that saw the team put up six and seven runs in back-to-back games versus lefties Chris Michalak and Eric Milton last week.

This doesn’t bode well for the southpaw Davis who is 0-3 while posting a 7.16 ERA over his last three starts.

“I just didn`t really do my job tonight,” Davis said after giving up seven runs in 3 2/3 in a 7-2 loss to the Florida Marlins late last month. “I fell behind hitters, and these guys are swinging the bat real well right now. They kept on hitting it where we weren`t.”

Colorado at San Diego – Under 7 ½

Chris Young wishes he got to throw against the Colorado Rockies every day.

The 6-foot-10 Young is 3-0 with a sparkling 2.49 ERA in four starts versus Colorado this season, including an eight-inning, one-hit performance in the team’s 2-0 win over the Rockies May 30 at San Diego’s Petco Park.

“We were hoping he could get it done,” manager Bruce Bochy said of Young’s flirtation with a no hitter. “But the important thing there is he settled down. A lot of times you have a letdown. You`re so caught up in the moment and you give up that hit. But he settled down and kept that run from scoring.”

Top five NFL Week 1 underdogs
                        Sun, Sep 4, 2006

Week 1 of the NFL season is probably the hardest on a bettor`s bankroll. Teams, players and coaches are one year older and may have a different agenda. The Minnesota Vikings are a prime example.

That`s why it has been said the first four weeks of the NFL season are when underdogs are most usually the most profitable. The best underdog bets of the last five years for Week 1 of the NFL.

Four of the five teams are road underdogs this week.

                        1. Atlanta Falcons
                        Record: 4-0

Close may be reserved for horseshoes and hand grenades but it’s no stranger to the Atlanta Falcons in the opening week. Three of Atlanta’s four underdog paydays over the last five years have been by four points or less, with the other being a straight up win over the Cowboys in Dallas.

That’s nothing new for the Falcons. Three of their paydays have come on the road while last year’s win over Philadelphia came on Monday Night Football. Obviously, Atlanta loves pressure in Week 1.

Week 1 opponent: at Carolina (-5)

                        2. Minnesota Vikings
                        Record: 2-0

If any team needs a win to start the season, it’s the Minnesota Vikings. Just when things appeared to be getting back to normal in the Twin city, No.1 wide receiver Koren Robinson is arrested and charged with drinking and driving, which leads to him being released by the team.

Minnesota did lure Todd Pinkston to fill the void but the former Philadelphia Eagle hasn’t played a regular reason game since the 2005 Super Bowl because of a torn Achilles’ tendon. Pinkston caught one pass in his lone preseason game last week versus Pittsburgh.

Week 1 opponent: at Washington (-4)

                        3. San Francisco 49ers
                        Record: 2-0

Initially, San Francisco’s back-to-back opening week underdog paydays, makes the 49ers a solid sleeper. The straight up win over St. Louis was impressive, as was the 3-point loss to the Atlanta Falcons two years back. But the fact both opponents are dome teams raises major questions about whether San Francisco was simply a beneficiary of home field advantage.

Dome teams playing on real grass, as opposed to artificial turf, often struggle, which is likely the case here. Neither Atlanta nor St. Louis was a pushover in either of those seasons.

                        Week 1 opponent: at Arizona (-7 1/2)

                        4. Houston Texans
                        Record: 2-1

Four years removed from their first payday in their first game, as an underdog no less, the Houston Texans continue to search for respect as a competitive NFL team. That won’t happen until the Texans do something drastic, like finish with a winning record or even .500.

Until then, oddsmakers will continue to stack the line against Houston knowing the public will fade the Texans because of the notion Houston is still in its infancy. The loss of running back Domanick Davis for the season likely won’t change the public’s opinion either.

Week 1 opponent: vs. Philadelphia (+4)

                        5. Dallas Cowboys
                        Record: 2-1

It’s hard to imagine a public darling the Cowboys being dogged in the opening week of the NFL. But for the third straight year, oddsmakers are doing exactly that. While it may be by less than a field goal, the Cowboys again find themselves beginning the season on the road, where the Cowboys have more trouble covering than Mike Vanderjagt does keeping quiet.

Since 2001, the Cowboys are 18-21 against the number away from the Lone Star State.

                        Week 1 opponent: at Jacksonville (-2 1/2)

FOR THE EARLY BIRDS. NFL WEEK 1 LINE MOVES

Miami at Pittsburgh (Thursday) – The line opened Pittsburgh -5 and is down to -4. Expect it to dip even more, perhaps even down to a field goal. There’s tremendous buzz about the Dolphins this season, especially now that Daunte Culpepper appears recovered from a knee injury.

Denver at St. Louis – The Broncos opened -3 ½ and currently are at -3. That’s where the line figures to stay.

New York Jets at Tennessee – The Titans opened -2 ½ and are up to -3. The move up isn’t because of the Titans signing Kerry Collins. He’s an upgrade on Billy Volek, but most likely Collins won’t be ready for the opener. The change in the pointspread is because the Jets look plain awful. They won’t be getting any help (at least for the first six weeks) from Curtis Martin either. No matter how bad the Jets might look, though, don’t expect the line to climb higher. If anything it might go down to 2 ½ because the Titans are also a bad team.

Baltimore at Tampa Bay – The Bucs opened -4 and are at -3. Expect buy-back on Tampa Bay, though, before a probable closing at -3 ½. Baltimore looks improved with Steve McNair at quarterback, but it has dropped 12 of its last 13 road games.

Buffalo at New England – The Patriots have gone from -8 to -8 ½. This is dead number area. The public may push it to -9 or higher remembering how good the Patriots looked against the Redskins last week and maybe thinking about how New England has defeated Buffalo in 10 of the past 11 meetings.

Cincinnati at Kansas City – Very early, the Chiefs were -4 ½. The line was taken down for a while and now, after Carson Palmer’s smashing performance this past Monday, the line has been adjusted to Chiefs -3. Considering how great Palmer and the Bengals looked against the Packers, the line could shrink to -2 ½.

Seattle at Detroit – The Seahawks opened -3 ½ and are either there or -4. Don’t expect any different number to emerge.

Atlanta at Carolina – The Panthers are -4 ½. Solid number.

Philadelphia at Houston – The Eagles opened -3 and are up to -3 ½ with Donovan McNabb having an impressive preseason. This line probably holds at 3 ½.

New Orleans at Cleveland – Some places opened Cleveland -2 ½. Now the line is -3 and could reach 3 ½ soon. A number of wise guys already have gotten involved with the Browns here.

Dallas at Jacksonville – The Jaguars are a steady -3. This may not be a big-handle game for the books. The number is real solid.

Chicago at Green Bay – The Bears are -3, but this game probably goes to at least -3 ½. It’s hard to make a case for the home underdog Packers with their rookie guards against such a tough defense even if Bears coach Lovie Smith is foolish enough to stick with Rex Grossman.

San Francisco at Arizona – The Cardinals are -7 ½. Look for them to get bet up. It’s their first game in a new stadium and there’s going to be plenty of hype and optimism.

Indianapolis at New York Giants – The Colts opened -3 ½ and are down to -3. The public loves Indy and Peyton Manning, but perhaps not in this spot. This is the first NBC Sunday night game, so money may continue to come on the home underdog.

Minnesota at Washington (Monday) – Washington opened -6 and is down to -5 ½. Considering how bad the Redskins looked in preseason, the public may keep away from them even though Clinton Portis may be OK to start. Don’t be shocked if the line gets down to -4 ½ by post.

San Diego at Oakland (Monday) – San Diego opened as a 2 ½-point road favorite and is up to -3. The line, though, may go back down since Philip Rivers didn’t look good in his last preseason game and will be making his first road start. The Chargers also lost their offensive left tackle, Roman Oben.
