    FSU VS MIAMI BETTING PREVIEW

    Associated Press
    Thu, Aug 31, 2006

MORTON GROVE, Ill. -- Just as decisive botched field-goal attempts have become a fixture during their games, disruptive tropical weather systems continue to become part of the story line between Florida State and Miami.

Despite Tropical Storm Ernesto`s interference, the No. 11 Seminoles visit the 12th-ranked Hurricanes on Monday night at the Orange Bowl for the second straight Labor Day meeting between the rivals.

Oddsmakers have listed the Hurricanes as 3 1/2-point favorites and the total is set at 39 1/2 points.

Weather has been a factor in this series ever since Miami joined the ACC in 2004. That year, Hurricane Frances postponed the opener by four days, and last season`s game came on the heels of Hurricane Katrina.

``It`s obviously Florida State week,`` Miami coach Larry Coker said, ``because we have a hurricane in the soft, warm Caribbean waters.``

Miami didn`t practice Wednesday after heavy rains and 45 mile-per-hour winds accompanied Ernesto`s landfall in Florida. Weather impacted the Seminoles on Tuesday as lightning moved a walkthrough inside after they took off the previous two days.

``We`ll be able to get our time in,`` Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said.

Both teams are projected to win division titles - Florida State the Atlantic and Miami the Coastal - and are expected to meet Dec. 2 in the ACC championship game at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

``Starting off with Miami is going to tell us where we`re at right now,`` Seminoles cornerback Tony Carter said. ``I like it. It gets you ready from the start.``

Bowden, the all-time leader with 359 victories, won the inaugural ACC title game after losing the last three regular-season contests last year. It was the 12th ACC championship for Bowden, who has lost 20 games in the last five seasons after dropping 19 from 1987-2000.

``Every year`s new,`` said Bowden, whose team`s triple-overtime loss to Penn State in the Orange Bowl concluded an 8-5 season. ``It`s challenging and it`s fun to build and try to put together an offense and a defense and a kicking game that can beat the other team. I still love that.``

Bowden, 76, is 12-19 against Miami since becoming the Seminoles coach in 1976.

Miami finished 9-3 for the second straight season after a 40-3 loss to LSU in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30. Coker then dismissed four assistants: offensive coordinator Dan Werner, assistant head coach/offensive line coach Art Kehoe, running backs coach Don Soldinger and linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves.

Miami also suspended players who violated team rules: running back Tyrone Moss, receivers Ryan Moore and Rashaun Jones, and linebacker James Bryant. Moore, who was also suspended for the Peach Bowl, is out indefinitely.

Moss had 701 yards and 12 touchdowns, and Moore caught 28 passes for 464 yards and four touchdowns last season. Jones and Bryant saw time on special teams.

``The message is pretty clear - we have high standards here,`` Coker said. ``They`re not bad kids. But we`ve got to get a message across.``

Miami can make a statement by avenging last year`s 10-7 defeat, which ended the Hurricanes` six-game win streak in the series and halted their nine-game season-opening run.

The Hurricanes, who lead 29-21 in the series, won six meetings since 1991 by benefiting from failed Florida State field-goal tries. Fortunes shifted last year when Miami kicker Jon Peattie could not attempt a 27-yarder after a dropped snap with 2:16 left. Peattie also missed from 47 and 39 yards.

Florida State`s Drew Weatherford prevailed in his starting debut despite completing 7 of 24 passes for 67 yards and an interception in last season`s meeting. Weatherford went on to become the first freshman to lead the ACC in total offense and topped all first-year players nationally in passing yards (3,208) and touchdown passes (18).

Miami`s Kyle Wright completed 16 of 28 passes for 232 yards with a touchdown and an interception in his first start, and went 180-for-307 with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2005.

Bowden replaced 14 starters, including three who were among the top 14 picks in the NFL draft, and cornerback Antonio Cromartie - the 19th selection who was injured in 2005. Miami, meanwhile, had nine players drafted.

The Seminoles` defense remains strong with linebacker Buster Davis (91 tackles) and tackle Andre Fluellen (26 tackles) returning.

``Miami is not going to be lethargic,`` Davis said. ``They are going to come out and hit you in the mouth every single play.``

Running back Lorenzo Booker (552 yards, four TDs) and receiver Greg Carr (30 catches, 618 yards and nine TDs) provide options for Weatherford. Wright will look for tight end Greg Olsen (31, 451, four TDs) with suspensions hindering his offensive choices.

Safeties Brandon Meriweather (88 tackles) and Kenny Phillips (67) are among the top defensive returnees for Miami, but linebacker Glenn Cook might miss the game because of an unspecified knee injury.

``We know there`s a lot of people doubting us,`` Hurricanes linebacker Jon Beason said. ``We like that.``

Top five NFL Week 1 underdogs
        Sun, Sep 4, 2006

Week 1 of the NFL season is probably the hardest on a bettor`s bankroll. Teams, players and coaches are one year older and may have a different agenda. The Minnesota Vikings are a prime example.

That`s why it has been said the first four weeks of the NFL season are when underdogs are most usually the most profitable. The best underdog bets of the last five years for Week 1 of the NFL.

Four of the five teams are road underdogs this week.

        1. Atlanta Falcons
        Record: 4-0

Close may be reserved for horseshoes and hand grenades but it’s no stranger to the Atlanta Falcons in the opening week. Three of Atlanta’s four underdog paydays over the last five years have been by four points or less, with the other being a straight up win over the Cowboys in Dallas.

That’s nothing new for the Falcons. Three of their paydays have come on the road while last year’s win over Philadelphia came on Monday Night Football. Obviously, Atlanta loves pressure in Week 1.

Week 1 opponent: at Carolina (-5)

        2. Minnesota Vikings
        Record: 2-0

If any team needs a win to start the season, it’s the Minnesota Vikings. Just when things appeared to be getting back to normal in the Twin city, No.1 wide receiver Koren Robinson is arrested and charged with drinking and driving, which leads to him being released by the team.

Minnesota did lure Todd Pinkston to fill the void but the former Philadelphia Eagle hasn’t played a regular reason game since the 2005 Super Bowl because of a torn Achilles’ tendon. Pinkston caught one pass in his lone preseason game last week versus Pittsburgh.

Week 1 opponent: at Washington (-4)

        3. San Francisco 49ers
        Record: 2-0

Initially, San Francisco’s back-to-back opening week underdog paydays, makes the 49ers a solid sleeper. The straight up win over St. Louis was impressive, as was the 3-point loss to the Atlanta Falcons two years back. But the fact both opponents are dome teams raises major questions about whether San Francisco was simply a beneficiary of home field advantage.

Dome teams playing on real grass, as opposed to artificial turf, often struggle, which is likely the case here. Neither Atlanta nor St. Louis was a pushover in either of those seasons.

        Week 1 opponent: at Arizona (-7 1/2)

        4. Houston Texans
        Record: 2-1

Four years removed from their first payday in their first game, as an underdog no less, the Houston Texans continue to search for respect as a competitive NFL team. That won’t happen until the Texans do something drastic, like finish with a winning record or even .500.

Until then, oddsmakers will continue to stack the line against Houston knowing the public will fade the Texans because of the notion Houston is still in its infancy. The loss of running back Domanick Davis for the season likely won’t change the public’s opinion either.

Week 1 opponent: vs. Philadelphia (+4)

        5. Dallas Cowboys
        Record: 2-1

It’s hard to imagine a public darling the Cowboys being dogged in the opening week of the NFL. But for the third straight year, oddsmakers are doing exactly that. While it may be by less than a field goal, the Cowboys again find themselves beginning the season on the road, where the Cowboys have more trouble covering than Mike Vanderjagt does keeping quiet.

Since 2001, the Cowboys are 18-21 against the number away from the Lone Star State.

        Week 1 opponent: at Jacksonville (-2 1/2)

              Six-Pack for Monday
-- Florida Marlins are at .500, after being 13-33 at one point. If Reds don't make the playoffs, Joe Girardi gets Manager of the Year in National League.
-- College football coaches are crazy; Tommy West, coach at Memphis, put his heart bypass operation off until after Signing Day last February. Now thats insane, but he did land an outstanding recruiting class. Hope he lives to meet all of them and see them graduate.
-- Garrett Wolfe, running back at Northern Illinois, is quite a player. Watching him run against Ohio State; this kid will play in the NFL. Short, quick, third down-type back.
-- At one point Saturday, Ohio State QB Smith was 5-5 for 112 yards passing, with three TD's. He'll need big game on Saturday, if Buckeyes are to win in Austin.
-- There is a pizza place in Moscow, Idaho-- Karl Marx Pizza
-- If you buy tickets for Mets' 15 home games in September you get first crack at playoff tickets; money for any unused playoff tickets, however, go to the non-refundable deposit for 2007 season tickets. Is anyone honest these days?

Monday's List of 13: Preseason look, Pittsburgh Steelers
                13) What a summer for Ben Roethlisberger; first the accident with his motorcycle, then rumors about his passing thumb, and now, emergency appendicitis. He'll miss Thursday's game with Miami, and so probably will Hines Ward (hamstring). It is not going to be an easy week for backup QB Charlie Batch.

                12) Steelers are Super Bowl champs, but uneasy lies the head with the crown on it, right? There are rumors that this will be last year in Steel City for coach Cowher. Pittsburgh has had only two coaches since 1969, an amazing run of stability.

                11) In Week 13 last year, Steelers lost 38-31 at home, making them 7-5 and a bubble team; they beat three NFC North teams and the Browns (41-0) to make playoffs, then beat Bengals on road, Colts on road, Denver on road to make the Super Bowl, where officials helped them win their fifth Lombardi Trophy. But make no mistake about it, they had little margin for error.

                10) As usual, Steelers were aggressive and successful on the first drive of a half; they averaged 39.9 yds per opening drive (4th in NFL), 36.6 for all first drives (also 4th). One area they slipped was allowing 73 points on opening drives (27th).

                9) Steelers were very good in the red zone last yr, averaging 5.38 ppd on offense (4th), allowing 4.04 ppd on defense (5th).

                8) Pittsburgh was awesome defensively when their opponent was backed up; on 56 enemy drives that started 80+ yds from end zone, Steelers allowed just six FGs and a TD, for average of 0.45 ppd, best average in NFL by far (Bucs, 0.72).

                7) Steelers moved the chains; they went 3-and-out on just 29 of 177 drives (24.9%, 2nd). They allowed touchdowns on just 25 of 173 drives (14.5%, T4th).

                6) Pittsburgh forced 234 incompletions last year (T5th); their +83 incompletion ratio led the NFL. Opponents threw 83 more incompletions, had 83 more empty plays. A big number.

                5) Despite all those gaudy numbers, keep in mind: if Big Ben doesn't make the tackle after Bettis' fumble in Indy last year, Steelers are biggest chokers in history of NFL. They really came close to a monumnetal choke.

                4) Their two games vs Baltimore last year were decided by a total of four points; Steelers won 20-19 at home, lost 16-13 in OT at Baltimore. McNair gives Ravens serious upgrade at QB this season-- will it be enough to catch Steelers in standings?

                3) Pittsburgh drafted two WRs with its first three picks-- they lost Randle-El to free agency. Ohio State rookie Holmes led NFL in arrests, with two before training camp. They drafted a QB in 5th round, then cut him. This was first year since '92 that Steelers didn't draft a linebacker, and they're thin there.

                2) '06 opens with the Thursday opener, which just became big problem, with the appendectomy for Big Ben; after that, they go to Jacksonville for Monday nighter, have short week to be ready for Bengals, then have an early bye. They have home Thursday nighter vs Browns, close season in Cincinnati, and also have December game in Charlotte.

                1) 2006 begins with lot more questions than usual for a team defending its title. Big Ben has had three operations in ten months; will Cowher retire to the outer banks, and if so, who inherits the Steelers' throne? Not like the Steelers breezed in '05 (they were 7-5 at one point). They might have struggle to make the playoffs and defend their crown.

                  Hot streaks

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia has really stepped up his game for the Indians lately. He hasn`t given up more than three runs in a game since July 26 and he`s 2-0 in his last three starts. He`s on the road today where he`s 5-3 to take on Shaun Marcum and the Toronto Blue Jays as a -139 favorite.

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) - What more can you say about Wang and his solid pitching for the Yankees? He`s emerged as the new ace for them by posting 16 wins this season, and went 3-0 in his last three with a stellar 2.18 ERA. Oddsmakers have made him a hefty -207 favorite to get his 17th win today against the major league worst Kansas City Royals.

Roger Clemens (Houston Astros) - Sitting 3 1/2 games back of the Wild Card leading San Diego Padres, the Astros are making moves when Clemens takes the mound. In his last three he`s been nearly untouchable with a 0.90 ERA. When pitching away from home, he`s gone 4-2 with a 1.93 ERA and he`ll look to build on that today as a -106 favorite against Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Barry Zito (Oakland Athletics) - After an 8-2 run in their last 10 games, the A`s have built up a 7 1/2 game lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West. Barry Zito is 3-0 in his last three starts with a 1.59 ERA while striking out just under six batters per game. Oddsmakers have taken notice and made him a -159 favorite today against divison rivals Texas Rangers.

Jon Garland (Chicago White Sox) - With the Twins chasing down the White Sox in the AL Wild Card race, Jon Garland has taken it upon himself to set an example to the pitching staff. He`s 8-1 in his last nine starts while pitching three shutout games during that stretch. Away from his home turf he`s 11-2 and will look for number 12 tonight against the Boston Red Sox as a -152 favorite.

                  Cold streaks

Nate Robertson (Detroit Tigers) - Robertson has been and down this season for the Tigers. In his last eight games he`s gone just 3-5, raising his season ERA to 4.04. He hasn`t fared well in afternoon games either, going 3-5 with a 5.06 ERA and he`ll look to reverse that trend today against Jarrod Washburn and the Seattle Mariners as a -138 favorite.

Brad Hennessey (San Francisco Giants) - The Giants have risen up the Wild Card standings in the National League, but Hennessey is making it difficult to stay with the leaders. He`s 0-2 in his last three games with a sizeable 10.32 ERA. The Giants need him to snap out of that funk when they take on Aaron Harang and the Cincinnati Reds as +117 underdogs.

Josh Fogg (Colorado Rockies) - The Rockies are quickly falling out of the postseason chase due to their pitching problems. A perfect example is right-hander Josh Fogg who`s 2-4 in his last six starts and has seen his season ERA balloon to 5.36. On the road this season he`s 4-5 while giving up 27 walks. LINE WATCH FSU VS MIAMI

It looks as though the Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles are in for a wet night in south Florida, but as of early Monday morning no major shift has occurred in oddsmakers’ totals.

Tropical Depression Six, which is predicted to become Tropical Storm Florence as early as tonight, is already causing precipitation in Miami today and it is expected to get worse as the 8 p.m. ET game time approaches.

The line for tonight`s game has the Hurricanes as 3 ½- point favorites with the total set at 39 ½. The total opened at 41 but most books dropped to 39 ½ early Sunday morning. Some books dropped the number an additional half-point to 39 early this morning. The public`s tendency is to take the under when poor weather is expected, so we may see this number drop as game time draws nearer.

Showers and thunderstorms are forecasted to blanket the city for much of the morning and afternoon with the temperature at 85 degrees and winds of five to 10 mph. Possible severe thunderstorms are on the charts for tonight and as much as one inch of rain could pour down on the Orange Bowl.

The Orange Bowl has a natural grass surface, and grass tends to be more slick after rainfall than most FieldTurf or new-age artificial surfaces. The grass shouldn`t be anything unexpected for Florida State, though. The Noles also play on natural grass at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.
