I can't cap football on a daily basis as well as I can baseball, so I don't. But, I can find plays every now and then that standout for various reasons. I have one for Saturday.
California is a small favorite at Tennessee after opening as a dog. Most of you are picking Tennessee to cover, but don't underestimate Cal. It's true they are playing an untested QB, but they are a team that relies on the run much more than the pass. Last year they ran the ball 40 times a game for a very good 5.8 ypc, while passing just 27 times a game. Marshaw Lynch is a bonified Heisman canidate with 1,246 yards, second best in the Nation last year. Their new Offense Coordinator, Mike Dunbar, came from Northwestern whose Offense had over 500 yards per game.
Seven players are back from a defense that gave up the fewest yards in the Pac 10. The Bears secondary is a question mark, but their linebackers are among the best in the country and Bradon Mebane might be the best defensive tackle in the nation.
Tennessee had an off year last year and they still have some question marks this year. Their strongest unit is the secondary, while they are hurting at linebacker where all three starters from last year are gone. They have very good players at the skill positions, although their offensive line only has All American tackle Arron Sears returning. They are a more physical team that California's West Coast Finess style, but all in all California isn't ranked number 9 in the Nation without good reason, while Tennessee is ranked 22. The crowd will be a factor but someone must agree with me, since Cal went from a 1.5 point dog to a 2 point favorite.
Lay the two points for 10 units. I play all my football plays for at least 10 units, double my baseball plays because I have so few football plays.
