        Hot streaks:

Noah Lowry (San Francisco Giants) - Lowry has been lights-out in his last to trips to the hill. He won both starts while allowing just one earned run on eight hits. The Giants take the Chicago Cubs today with San Francisco listed as a -121 favorite. The under is 4-1 in Lowry`s last five outings.

Kenny Rogers (Detroit Tigers) - While the rest of the Tigers’ pitching staff has been struggling, the old veteran has been stellar. Rogers is 3-0 with an impressive 1.42 ERA in his last three outings. The Tigers are -130 faves against the Los Angeles Angels tonight. The under is 5-0 in Rogers’ last five games and tonight’s total is set at 9.

Chris Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals) - Carpenter is carrying the Cards in their playoff run and has catapulted himself to the top of the Cy Young hunt. He is 2-0 with a ridiculous 1.08 ERA in his last three starts, improving his overall ERA to 2.96, third best in the majors. St. Louis heads into tonight’s contest as -221 faves versus the Pittsburgh Pirates.

        Cold streaks:

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Contreras went from being one of the best pitchers in baseball with a 9-0 record, to quite possibly the worst pitcher in the league. He is 2-6 with an ugly 6.50 ERA in his last 10 starts and in his last three he has allowed a combined 19 earned runs on 27 hits. The White Sox are -163 favorites against the Kansas City Royals tonight.

Carlos Silva (Minnesota Twins) - Immediately after Silva began turning his season around by winning three straight starts, he came apart at the seams. Since the winning streak, he is 0-3 with a 7.29 ERA. Silva and the Twins are +157 underdogs against the New York Yankees tonight and the total is set at 10 ½. Minnesota has played under in each of Silva’s last four starts.

        Other notables:

Jason Jennings (Colorado Rockies) - The Rockies have lost four straight games with Jennings on the mound.

Runelvys Hernandez (Kansas City Royals) - Hernandez out-dueled Roy Halladay in his last start, pitching a complete game, seven-hit shutout against the Blue Jays.

          US OPEN

David Nalbandian (-105) vs. Marat Safin (-105)

Action has moved this line from Nalbandian -135 when it opened to even money, which is good news. Nalbandian is clearly the current better player here when in form, despite the racket smashing and tantrums he went through in his first-round five-setter against Germany’s Michael Berrer.

The main reason this line opened with Nalbandian paying a small favorite price is because he has lost in five of the six meetings with Safin. The only catch is they last met in 2004 when Safin won three titles and finished in the top four. The Russian now ranks 104th in the world, while Nalbandian ranks fourth.

There seems to be this perception about Safin that he will suddenly return to the form bettors saw when he won the Australian Open last year and the US Open in 2000. Don’t buy into it. Safin’s serve is booming and tough to compete with when it’s smoking, but he falters over a best-of-five set match against solid overall players.

Nalbandian is one of them, and he is no stranger to playing well at Flushing Meadows. The Argentinean fell in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Roger Federer last season, and he already made it to the semis at the Australian and French Opens this year.

Nalbandian didn’t play his best tennis in his first match against Berrer, but Safin won’t be so lucky to see him play short of his capabilities again.

          Prediction: Nalbandian -105

Jelena Jankovic (+145) vs. Nicole Vaidasova (-155)

It can’t be fun getting schooled by a 17-year-old, but that’s what 21-year-old Jankovic has experienced in her three meetings with Vaidasova. Jankovic didn’t win a set against Vaidasova in their first two matches – both in 2005 – and she withdrew after losing the first set in their most recent meeting in Strasbourg in May.

That seems to be a pattern with Jankovic. When the tough gets going, so does she. The Serbia and Montenegro native has retired or withdrawn in four tournaments this year including in Montreal in August.

She can be temperamental on the court and she accused the umpires of making “a lot of bad calls” during her Round 1 match against Gisela Dulko. The New York crowd let Jankovic hear its displeasure, but it didn’t stop her from advancing in three sets.

This is where her tournament ends, however. Vaidasova is the better player and is certainly stronger mentally. She has stormed up the WTA rankings this year and has advanced to at least the fourth round in all three grand slams so far this season. Her best performance was at Roland Garros when she lost in the semis.

Expect more strong tennis in Round 3 from Vaidasova, and don’t be shocked if Jankovic pulls up lame with a sore shoulder, abductor injury, or a bruised ego.

          prediction: Vaidasova -155

Elena Dementieva (–215) vs. Vera Zvonareva (+195)

The way Dementieva is playing right now, she probably isn’t going to lose to anyone outside the top 10. That includes Zvonareva, who ranked 34th in the world heading into the US Open.

Dementieva, the fourth seed in the tournament, has lost just nine games through four sets and looks like she could get better as she gets deeper in the draw. She committed just 12 unforced errors in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Emma Laine and she’s now broken her opponents nine times in two matches.

Zvonareva didn’t get through her first two matches quite as cleanly, though she hasn’t lost a set yet. She needed a tiebreak to win a set in Round 1 and finished off American Jill Craybas 7-5 in the second set in Round 2.

This is the first Grand Slam of the year in which Zvonareva has made it past the first round in singles play. She may be more focused on her doubles matches, where she has had more success this season and advanced to the quarters at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

Zvonareva knows how tough it is to beat Dementieva at Flushing Meadows, also. Dementieva beat her in three sets in the fourth round in 2004, when she went on to lose in the final. Last year Dementieva made it all the way to the semis and she has made it to at least the fourth round in five of the last six years.

          Prediction: Dementieva -215

                Fri., Sep, 1 Line Watch

Cincinnati at San Diego – Padres -116

The pressure of a tightly contested NL wild-card race seems to be more than the Cincinnati Reds can handle.

Headed into today’s tilt at San Diego, the team has dropped six in a row and fallen a game and a half back of the Padres. This series gives them an opportunity to make up some ground, but their ability to take advantage is questionable.

“We’re not playing well,” Reds manager Jerry Narron told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We’re not doing the little things.”

One of those little things includes cashing in their players on the base paths. The Reds are hitting just .103 with runners in scoring position during the slide.

“Some guys haven’t been as selective as they usually are,” Narron said. “We’ve struggled so much with runners in the scoring position that they’re trying to get a hit instead of concentrating on what they have to do, which is have good at-bats.”

The pitching and defense has been little better with the Reds allowing a combined 35 runs in their last six. Ace Bronson Arroyo tries to stop the bleeding tonight, which is probably why Cincy is only listed as a small road dog. However, he’s posted just two quality starts through his last seven outings and is 1-2 lifetime against San Diego.

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City – Royals +155

With their chances of making the postseason gone since before the All-Star break, K.C. has become a huge threat to playoff contenders.

Over the last two weeks they’ve taken two of four from the White Sox, two of four from Oakland and just notched a series win in a three-game set with Minnesota. Their advantage, say the Royals, is that they’re playing without any pressure.

“It’s a little different being on this side of it,” second baseman Mark Grudzielanek told the Kansas City Star. “I think it’s tougher for (contenders) playing us. We really have nothing to lose.”

Meanwhile, the Pale Hose appear to be losing steam as they try and hang on to their half-game AL Wild Card lead. Chicago is playing just .500 baseball through its last 10 tilts. That includes a demoralizing 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay last night in extra innings.

“This is a game we should`ve won,” A.J. Pierzynski told reporters. “We had chances and we just didn’t get it done”.

Pittsburgh at St. Louis – Pirates +203

Can the Pirates keep their hot streak going?

They just completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs, but judging by the odds on today’s tilt in St. Louis, books seem to believe the streak ends there. There is, after all, a big difference between the 54-79 Cubs and NL Central-leading Cardinals. Nonetheless, Pittsburgh’s players remain optimistic.

“We do believe now we can pull it out, instead of hoping we can pull it out,” outfielder Jason Bay told reporters. “Maybe we can stay on a little roll and carry it into September.”

Starter Zach Duke appears to be their best chance to keep the cash flowing. The young southpaw held the Cards to a single run though all nine innings as the Bucs hammered St. Louis 7-1 on Aug. 8.

                  Fri. Sep. 1 Totals Watch

                  Toronto at Boston – Under 10 ½

The Boston Red Sox finally got some welcome news yesterday.

Slugger David Ortiz was released from hospital after tests for an irregular heartbeat came back negative Thursday.

“My health is fine,” Ortiz told a radio station in his native Dominican Republic. “The doctors have told me to rest [Thursday] and practice [today] so I can be ready to return to the playing field on Saturday.”

Unfortunately, that means Big Papi won’t be in the lineup when the Red Sox host the Toronto Blue Jays tonight. That certainly won’t help a Boston offense that has struggled recently, averaging just 2.5 runs over their last 10 games.

As a result, the O/U is 2-7-1 over that span.

Seattle at Tampa Bay – Under 9 ½

A lot can change over the course of a season.

Take the Seattle Mariners, who started the season as one of the oldest teams in the major leagues with an average age of 31.4 years old. Well a couple of trades and transactions later and the Mariners have become the third youngest team in the league, dropping their average age to 27.86 years.

“I was talking to Gil (Meche), ‘Do you realize we`re like the oldest guys here?’ It`s really amazing,” 27-year old Joel Pineiro told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. “A couple years back there were all these veteran guys who had been around forever. Now they`re all gone and we`re the guys who have been here a long time.”

But as with any period of change there have been growing pains, especially at the plate. This is evident in the Mariners batting, the worst in the entire major leagues since the All-Star break.

Seattle is averaging only four runs per game since the midsummer classic while hitting .267 as a team and counting only 44 home runs over the span.

But while the Mariners have struggled with their fledgling offense, under bettors have made off like bandits, with the over/under going 16-26-2 in the 44 games.

New York Mets at Houston – Over 9 ½

The Houston Astros don’t think much of New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran.

That becomes apparent when Beltran, who came to New York after a brief stint with Houston two years ago, talks of the Astros ignoring his requests for a highlight video of the team’s 2004 playoff run.

“I called Houston to send me the copies and they never sent anything,” Beltran told New York’s Newsday. “They were so mad that I left.”

Well, if this were truly the case then there would be no better way for Beltran to remind the Astros of his existence than to keep hitting the ball the way he has over the last week, batting .333 with three home runs and nine RBIs.

Coincidentally, the Mets have averaged 7.8 runs and the over has cashed in five of New York’s six games over the seven-day stretch.
