    Dunkel Baseball write-up - Thursday

    NY Mets at Colorado
No doubt having Oliver Perez (2-10, 6.78) on the mound these days is a shaky proposition. In his first start with the Mets, Perez gave up five runs in five innings while walking five against the Phillies. The one-time touted prospect from Pittsburgh does not approach that tag right now. But with the Mets lineup behind him, even Perez has a decent shot at victory today. New York has enjoyed the rarefied air of Colorado thus far, scoring 21 runs while easily taking the first two games. Perhaps even more important for the Mets was David Wright's grand slam last night -- possibly a sign that the All-Star is snapping out of his slump. With the Mets offense appearing to click, even Colorado's Jeff Francis (10th in NL with 3.53 ERA) could have a tough time shutting it down. This makes the Mets a nice play as a Vegas underdog according to Dunkel, which has New York favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: NY Mets (+1 1/2).

      Hot Streaks

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - A Twins victory is almost guaranteed when they send Santana to the hill. Minnesota has won nine straight games behind its ace with Santana going 7-0 over that stretch. He is an amazing 15-2 since April 27 and the Twins as a team are 22-2 during that period. Minnesota is a heavy -330 favorite against the Kansas City Royals today.

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - Halladay is the front-runner for the American League Cy Young so far and rightfully so. He is 16-4 with a 3.12 ERA on the season. The 16 victories are tied for the major league lead and his ERA is fifth best in all of baseball. Halladay took a tough loss in his last outing despite pitching a complete game four-hitter while allowing just two earned runs in a 2-0 loss to the Royals. He takes on the Boston Red Sox tonight and oddsmakers have not yet released a line on the contest.

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - The ageless wonder is playing like he’s still in his 20s. Smoltz has been almost untouchable lately, allowing just three hits and one earned run over his last two starts including a stretch of 15 1/3 scoreless innings. He has just one loss since June 18 and an 8-1 in 14 starts. He and the Braves host the Giants tonight with Atlanta listed as a -178 favorite. Smoltz is 6-0 with a 2.11 ERA in his last six outings at home.

      Cold Streaks

Jason Hammel (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - Hammel has spent most of the year in the minors where life was much simpler. In his three major league starts, he is 0-2 with a miserable 7.71 ERA while pitching just 14 combined innings. During his time in Triple-A this year, he went 5-9 with a 4.23 ERA. Tampa Bay is a +227 underdog against the Chicago White Sox today.

Javier Vazquez (Chicago White Sox) - The only thing Vazquez has going for him is that he’s facing a pitcher colder than himself in Hammel. Vazquez is one of the worst money pitchers in baseball. He`s dropped 4.13 units so far this season and he is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his last three outings. However, Vazquez seems to have just one really bad inning per contest that costs him the game. The under is 4-1 in Vazquez’s last five starts and today’s total is set at 10 ½.

      Other notables:

Daniel Cabrera (Baltimore Orioles) - Cabrera has won his last two starts and is carrying a 16-inning scoreless streak into tonight’s game.

Randy Wolf (Philadelphia Phillies) - Wolf is 3-0 since returning from Tommy John surgery but his 5.58 ERA tells a different story.

New York Mets at Colorado: Mets +103

Look at the starting pitchers and it’s a mismatch.

The Mets start Oliver Perez, who was dominant in 2004 with a 2.98 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.0. Since then he’s 9-15 with an ERA of 6.26 and a pitiful 1.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Perez was also rocked in his last visit to Coors Field.

Jeff Francis, on the other hand, is in the midst of a summer of winning. The Rockies are 7-3 and up 4.05 units over his 10 starts in July and August and Francis is packing a nice ERA of 2.50 over those starts.

The Mets, however, are beating up on every pitcher they’re facing lately. They’re 9-1 over their last 10 largely because they’re averaging 8.1 runs per game over that span. The Rockies are only averaging 4.1 runs over the same span and, not coincidentally, are 2-8 over their last 10.

And even though Perez allowed five runs over five innings in his first Mets start last Saturday, he managed to bring a no-hitter into the fifth and showed signs of being a valuable contributor to the New York rotation down the stretch.

        Baltimore at Texas: Orioles +120

Speaking of talented 24 year-old pitchers whose control problems resulted in a trip to the minors, Daniel Cabrera is even further along the recovery track than Perez.

Cabrera still leads the AL in walks despite a three-week stint away from the Orioles this summer. Since his return, however, the plus-sized right-hander has been next to unhittable.

He’s gone seven innings or more in three of his four starts, allowing one earned run or less in each of them, all Baltimore wins. He also has a 16-inning scoreless streak with a complete game shutout of the Blue Jays in the mix.

Adam Eaton starts for the Rangers, who are 3-4 and down 1.19 units since the right-hander returned to the team after a lengthy stint on the DL.

        Philadelphia at Washington: Phillies –135

The Phillies are 6-0 in Randy Wolf’s six starts since returning to the club on July 30. Since that start, Philadelphia is 18-11 and has become a leading contender to win the NL wild card.

Wolf for MVP? Hardly. The Phillies’ bats are responsible for their wins, not the return of a pitcher who’s completed six innings only once this year and sports a 5.58 ERA.

Philadelphia has averaged a run per game more than anyone else in the NL in August, led by Ryan Howard’s 40 RBIs and .718 slugging percentage for the month.

Pedro Astacio and the other Nationals pitchers were well aware of Howard’s prowess at the dish on August 20, when they walked him three times. The other Philly batters came to Howard’s rescue, however, chasing Astacio after two innings en route to a 12-10 victory. The winning pitcher? Wolf, despite allowing six runs in only five innings.

San Francisco at Atlanta – Under 8 ½

Hurricane Ernesto didn’t hit Florida with as much punch as expected.

But that doesn’t mean the effects of the storm weren’t and won’t continue to be felt for next several days throughout the southern states. Case in point, the Atlanta area that is expecting wet weather starting with tonight’s forecast calling for thunderstorms and showers.

“It doesn`t look good right now,” Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I`m afraid it really might mess us up.”

Of course the ones who really should be afraid are the San Francisco Giants, who will be facing John Smoltz. The 39-year old Atlanta ace has been sensational lately, allowing one run while lasting eight innings in each of his last two starts.

Florida Marlins at St. Louis Cardinals – Under 9

Jeff Suppan owned the Florida Marlins the last time he faced them.

The 31-year old Suppan lasted 8 1/3 innings, striking out four batters and giving up only two runs in a 7-2 St. Louis win on a nine-run total in early May.

“He was a master,” manager Tony La Russa told reporters following the win. “He made so many great pitches.”

The surprising thing was the win came on the road where Suppan has struggled (4-5, 7.07 ERA). It’s a good thing tonight’s game is at Busch Stadium where the right-hander is 6-2 with a 3.04 ERA this season.

Milwaukee Brewers at Houston Astros – Over 8 ½

It has been a frustrating year for the Houston Astros.

Coming off the franchise`s first ever World Series appearance, the Astros have struggled to a 65-68 record this season, weighed down by an offense that is the worst the entire National League.

“We were counting on a better offensive ballclub this year and it hasn`t panned out the way I would like,” manager Phil Garner told the Houston Chronicle earlier this week.

But you’d have no idea the offense is struggling with the Astros averaging almost eight runs per game over their last four games. Not surprisingly, the over has cashed in three of the four games.

djmauiboy Thanks for the line move info. Knowing the line moves is one thing, knowing the reason behind the line more really helps. Hope you keep doing these.

We have a good little team here, so if I don't get it Udog or Spark surely will.

Anything you need, I'm more than happy to help out.
