            LINE MOVES

            Thursday, August 31

Boston College at Central Michigan – +13 to +11

The line moved because of some key injuries on both sides of the ball for the Eagles. Running back Andre Callender (shoulder), wide receiver Tony Gonzalez (hamstring), offensive lineman Ty Hall (neck), defensive lineman B.J. Raji (leg) and linebacker Tyronne Pruitt (hamstring) are questionable for Thursday’s game.

“The Boston College line move represents a unique situation that bookmanagers are trying to stay ahead of,” says a bookmaker. Quick line moves are reducing any offside exposure.”

            Northwestern at Miami-Ohio – +3 to +4 ½

Sharp action on the Wildcats moving the line, the main reason is simply the fact that Miami-Ohio returns just seven starters and will be without starting running back Brandon Murphy, who was ruled out on Tuesday because of an ankle injury.

            UTEP at San Diego State – pick’em to – 2 ½

This move is the result of more sharp action, this time on SDSU. The first wave of money came in early August, when the line opened, moving the Aztecs to 1-point favorites.

The second wave of betting has been within the last week, with San Diego State steadily moving up another 1 ½ points.

              WEATHER WATCH

The biggest weather story in the country this week is without doubt Tropical Storm Ernesto.

Ernesto remains rather weak at this point as it moves across South Florida, but is expected to bring 4-8 inches of rain to some areas of the southern United States by game time on Thursday night.

After moving up central Florida, Ernesto could emerge stronger on Thursday, and a hurricane warning has been issued for the area between Georgia and Cape Fear, North Carolina.

              Northwestern (-4 ½, total set at 56) at Miami-Ohio

Site: Yager Stadium in Oxford, Ohio.

Stadium style: Open south end zone, limited seating at north end zone; artificial surface.

The weather isn’t expected to be very good for this game, with thunderstorms and light rain showers in the forecast for Oxford. Cloud cover is at 72 percent, with the temperature expected to be 62 degrees. Wind is traveling north-east at seven mph. The slippery turf at Yager Stadium could hinder Northwestern running back Tyrell Sutton`s ability to change direction on a whim, a trait that helped him rush for 1,474 yards last year.

Florida International at Middle Tennessee State (-10 ½ -110, total set at 46 ½ )

Site: Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Stadium style: Enclosed first-level seating, second level of seats leaves south end zone and south-west and south-east corners open to wind; artificial surface.

Most books have pulled the total for this game off the board, probably due to the threat of thunderstorms. The wind is expected to come in at 8 mph, with the temperature registering 65 degrees and falling as low as 62. Maximum humidity is expected at 80 percent.

Eastern Michigan at Ball State (-4 ½, total set at 51)

Site: Ball State Stadium in Muncie, Indiana.

Stadium style: One level of seating on east and west sides, and on north end zone. South end zone and all four corners open; grass.

Showers are expected to fall on Muncie during this game, with the temperature sitting at 60 degrees with maximum humidity at 86 percent. Wind is traveling east-north-east at 11 mph. The weather could limit both teams’ aerial attack, making the ground game more crucial.

Temple at Buffalo (-6, total set at 44)

Site: University Stadium in Buffalo, New York.

Stadium style: Four corners open, north end zone partially open

Wind could be a factor, with gusts expected to be between 10 and 20 mph traveling east-north-east. Sky is expected to be partly cloudy, while the temperature will be 60 degrees. Buffalo is hoping to use a West Coast offense this year and air it out more than they have in the past. That strategy could be difficult in their opener if the wind is as strong as expected.

                        Six-Pack for Thursday

-- College football starts tonight; make sure to log on to this website for analysis of all the games, through Fiesta Bowl in Arizona this January.

-- When Delmon Young was hit by pitch in his first major league at bat, then later homered in same game, he became first big leaguer to do that since John Ellis in 1969.

-- If you add a QB in August (Titans, Raiders) it is not a good sign. At least Tennessee has the Vince Young project to work on, but what are the Raiders thinking by signing Jeff George? It makes no sense.

-- I'm sitting with my dad watching SportsCenter; he asks me who the Raiders' starting QB is this year. I tell him that Aaron Brooks will start for the Silver and Black. He goes back to reading the paper, saying simply, "Oh. He stinks." Now that's analysis. Concise. To the point. Accurate.

-- It is almost Labor Day, and these intra-league matchups still haven't happened yet this season: Arizona-Nationals; Reds-Padres; Astros-Phillies. Scheduling in baseball is a mess, and geographic realignment is the way to fix it, but that's a whole another column I usually write every April.

-- Team USA shot 10-40 on 3's in their win over Germany Wednesday. This is major red flag for me, that they took 40 3's in a 40-minute game. Hell, college teams like Long Beach State don't shoot that many, and they play run-and-chuck; and Long Beach sure doesn't have the edge in talent like the Americans do over Germany. Get the ball inside.

Thursday's List of 13: Preseason look at the Raiders

                          13) Since losing the Super Bowl to Jon Gruden's Bucs after the '02 season, Raiders are 13-35; now that Cardinals have their shiny new dome, this might be the worst franchise in the NFL, other than the hurricane-ravaged Saints. Into this mess returns Art Shell, who went as head coach in Oakland from . We'll see what Shell can do.

                          12) I was preparing to write this piece when I looked at the transactions on TV; "Raiders sign Jeff George, QB" threw me off, it was like I had transformed back to 1998. Why in name of Pete would they sign George to be a backup QB? Andrew Walter has bad shoulder, but still, there has to be someone out there who is better than George.

                          11) If you don't think the Raiders are a joke, consider that the last two guys they got to be their starting QB were both discarded by the Saints, Collins and now Brooks. If the Saints don't want you, why should anyone else?

                          10) Last year, Oakland lost their first three games, allowing 25.3 ppg, then lost their last six contests, allowing 26.8 ppg. In between, they went 4-3, allowing 17 ppg. Raiders had +4 turnover ratio in their four wins, -8 in their 12 losses.

                          9) Raiders went 0-6 vs AFC West opponents last year, all of whom would consider Raiders to be their arch-rival. Oakland was outrushed by average of 65.3 yds/game in those six losses, and has negative turnover ratio in five of the six (even in sixth game).

                          8) Heads roll when teams go in tank; Oakland lost their last six games, with 9-7 home loss to Browns (Raiders were 3-pt favorite) only one of the six losses that was by less than nine points.

                          7) Raiders outscored opponents 27-26 on game's first drive, so hard to totally blame coaches for 4-12 disaster; they were prepared well enough to hang in games early.

                          6) Oakland threw 62 more incompletions than they forced (29th); running Turner's offense, those are especially horrible numbers, which is why Kerry Collins was unemployed until this week. Will Brooks help? Probably not a lot. Saints threw 58 more incompletions than they forced in 2005 (28th).

                          5) Raiders were especially bad anytime a drive started 80+ yards from end zone, no matter who had ball; they were 29th in NFL on black zone drives (41 pts/55 drives) and 30th in black zone defense (98 pts/53 drives).

                          4) Odd thing about Oakland is that they might have best PK/P combination in NFL with Janikowski/Lechler, but they still started seven more drives 80+ yds from goal line than their foes did, while opponents started seven more drives in Raider territory. Oakland opponents converted 40.5% of third down plays, a number that needs to go down.

                          3) Raiders' first two draft picks were defensive guys; they then added three offensive linemen and another DB; you go 4-12, you have lot of holes to fill, but this was good start.

                          2) Oakland opens with a home Monday night vs San Diego, then visit the Ravens before their early Week 3 bye. They get two soft games out of their bye, before visiting Denver in Week 6. The play the Chiefs in Weeks 11,16 and visit San Diego in Week 12. Cold weather games at Bengals, Jets, won't be fun, but lately, not much about the Silver and Black has translated to fun.

                          1) Al Davis is an icon of the NFL, but his Raiders are horrible right now, and with Aaron Brooks now under center and Jeff George behind him, things don't figure to improve much any time soon. Randy Moss got himself traded off a good Viking team; you wonder how well he and coach Shell will co-exist if this season turns ugly, like the last three have. I'll look this up and put in on this website's homepage, but when was the last time Raiders went 0-6 in AFC West games?

They'll do little bit better this season, but until major progress is made, this isn't a playoff team.
