              Hot streaks

Barry Zito (Oakland Athletics) - The A`s have won in five of Zito`s last six starts and the veteran left-hander claimed his 100th career win in his last outing. He did not allow a hit until the eigth inning in the 9-3 victory over Texas. Oakland is a -140 home favorite against the sliding Red Sox.

Jeremy Sowers (Cleveland Indians) - Sowers seeks his sixth straight victory today against Toronto. He`s 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts since July 22, not allowing more than three earned runs in any outing. The Indians are -147 home favorites.

Roger Clemens (Houston Astros) - Clemens, a -191 favorite today against the Brewers, will look to continue his recent success and win his fifth straight decision. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA in five starts in August, walking five and striking out 24. Run support should not be an issue today like it has been lately for Clemens. The Astros have outscored opponents 35-9 during their current four-game winning streak.

              Cold streaks

Ramon Ortiz (Washington Nationals) - Ortiz looks for his first victory in four starts when he takes the mound Wednesday. He is 0-2 with a 15.09 ERA in his last three outings and hasn`t lasted longer than five innings in any of those starts. Ortiz is 1-1 with a 14.85 ERA in two career starts against Philadelphia and is dogged today at +146.

Kris Benson (Baltimore Orioles) - Benson will try to bounce back from one of his worst outings of the season as a +126 road dog against the Rangers. The right-hander gave up six runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings in an 11-2 loss to Minnesota on Thursday. Benson is 1-5 with a 6.45 ERA in eight starts since July 2, and he has not won on the road since June 17.

              Other notables

Greg Maddux (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Maddux is 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA against the Reds this season. Three of those victories came while he was with the Chicago Cubs.

Brad Hennessey (San Francisco Giants) - Hennessey is 5-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 13 appearances, including six starts, on the road this season.

Wed, Aug 30, 2006 Totals Watch

                Milwaukee at Houston - under 8 (-110)

Looking at Roger Clemens, it’s easy to guess he’s 44 years old. His numbers on the other hand, certainly don’t support that.

One earned run allowed in three of his last four starts and a 2.50 ERA since June – fourth lowest in the majors – would have the Rocket in the running to put another Cy Young Award on his mantel, should his Astros give him some run support.

It’s the same old story but one that shouldn’t be ignored. The Rocket gets about 4.15 runs per outing from his Astros.

Baltimore at Texas – over 10 runs (-110)

Six innings, 13 runs and 2.00 units for over backers – that’s the line on Robinson Tejada at Ameriquest Field as a Texas Ranger.

At 24, Tejada continues to struggle with the learning curve of pitching in a hitter’s ballpark, a problem that dates back to last year when he was with the Philadelphia Phillies. Tejada, who finished with a 3.57 ERA in 13 starts, struggled with location and bounced between the starting job and bullpen before being traded during the offseason.

Tejada has skill, but not consistency.

New York Mets at Colorado – over 10 ½ (-110)

Somebody is messing with the humidor in Colorado and it could have something to do with Jeff Cirillo.

Milwaukee’s third baseman said baseball should investigate his claims that the humidor, which is used to store baseball’s at Coors Field to help combat Denver`s thin air, is making it harder to score runs.

Since the Humigate incident on Aug.1, Coors Field has seen eight games go over the total, compared to three unders and two pushes. The average score in those games is 11.1 – nearly two runs more than the season average.

Wed, Aug 30, 2006 Line Watch

                  Cincinnati at L.A. Dodgers – Reds +114

Earning 329 career victories eventually takes its toll on a hurler. Juts ask L.A. Dodgers starter Greg Maddux.

Since landing at No.10 on the all-time victories list with a 14-7 win over San Francisco Aug. 19, the veteran hasn’t had much gas in the tank. Following that milestone, he gave up four runs and 10 hits in just five innings as the Dodgers dropped a 9-7 decision to Arizona Friday.

“I guess they just match up good against me. I don`t know, but I didn`t pitch very good tonight,” he told reporters after that contest.

Normally L.A.’s stellar bullpen provides solid backup, but a short outing could prove disastrous tonight. The Dodgers needed 16 innings to grind out a 6-5 win over the Reds Tuesday and burned through six relievers in the process.

“We`ve played good in all the extra-inning ballgames, but we`ve just been stretching it out too long,” first baseman Jeff Kent told reporters. “You end up getting too tired, using all your guys and not taking advantage of all your opportunities.”

                  L.A. Angels at Seattle – Mariners +112

Something’s gotten into these Seattle Mariners even since they returned from that horrible road trip last week.

After losing 11 away games in 11 days, the M’s have won six of their last seven including two of three against the New York Yankees and a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox.

“It’s confidence,” first baseman Richie Sexson told the Tacoma News Tribune. “You have to forget about the day before and we weren’t doing that. The other side to why we are streaky is that when we are winning, we feel like we can win every day.”

That should be especially true with Jake Woods taking the hill versus the Angels today. The converted reliever has allowed just one run through two outings as a starter.

Kansas City at Minnesota – Royals +180

If you do the math, it looks like Boof Bonser is going to need more run support than Minnesota can provide.

The rookie right-hander has allowed at least three earned runs in four of his last five starts and only lasted longer than 5 1/3 innings once through that span. Meanwhile, the Twins have scored three or fewer runs in three of their last four games.

Unfortunately, Kansas City has been especially unkind to Bonser and his backers. Bonser was tagged for four runs in three innings as the Twins suffered a 7-2 loss to the Royals July 4.

                      Guys,

I just started to read the Strength Index in post #2 and realized that it hasn't been updated yet for the week. Sorry for any confusion, guys. I'll post this week's update as soon as it's available.
It seems odd that the evaluation period is Mon. through Sun. but they don't update until Wed. or Thur.
