Tuesday's Lists of 13: Looking at the Saints, Giants

    New Orleans Saints

    13) This is a sports website, so we'll focus on the Saints, who are far better off than lot of people who live on Gulf Coast, but as NFL teams go, the 3-13 Saints had an unmitigated disaster of a season in 2005. It is impossible for us to know exactly how horrible last year was for people on Gulf Coast;.
I mean, people died in their stadium. Will be interesting to see if this franchise can continue to survive in the Crescent City.

    12) There were high hopes for the '05 Saints, especially after they pounded the Patriots in Foxboro a couple of weeks before Katrina hit. But preseason games are just that, and once adversity hit, people scattered. A 2-2 start turned into a 1-11 finish (four of their last seven losses were by seven or less points, so Haslett kept them competing); only once in their last ten games did Saints have edge in field position, as depleted special teams and no positive turnover ratios in their last 12 games killed their field position. Playing an extra road game (at the Giants) when team wanted to play the game in San Antonio didn't help any.

    11) Saints won the opener at Carolina and beat the Bills in Week 4, then lost every game except for 21-19 win at the Jets in Week 12. When the Alamadome was booked, the team did some walkthroughs in parking lots, for Pete's sake. Players got hurt at a record pace; others spent their free time going back to New Orleans to take care of their belongings. It was the worst possible scenario in which to try and build a team. Haslett now coaches the defense in St Louis, Brooks now QBs the Raiders.

    10) 2006 Saints not only have a new coach, new QB, they now have Reggie Bush, a Gale Sayers- like talent who wasn't exactly the biggest need New Orleans had (Deuce McAllister is pretty good RB). But Bush is a marquee name that could be the franchise's biggest star since Archie Manning, and he has given Saints fans reason to hope, and reason to buy tickets. Drew Brees bought a home down the street from the Mannings; he is a proven NFL commodity, and he needs to be wanted, after what happened to him with the Chargers.

    9) Sean Payton comes from Dallas as an offensive coach who has a very tough job; it still has to be very difficult to lure free agents to New Orleans. Hell, this is probably the only head coaching job Payton even had a shot at. But he does have offensive weapons to work with. The defense is in worse shape.

    8) Saints were 28th in NFL in red zone offense last year (3.88), so having better QB figures to improve that figure a lot. Only four teams allowed more than the 83 points they allowed on drives that started 80+ yards from end zone (1.46 ppd, 28th).

    7) Saints turned ball over 43 times last year; their -24 turnover ratio was worst in NFL. The easy thing to do would be to simply blame Brooks (only five teams threw more incomplete passes) but that wouldn't be fair or completely accurate. While I wouldn't want him running my team, Brooks stood in the middle of an impossible situation last year and tried his best. Hopefully, he'll fare better in Oakland.

    6) New Orleans allowed 40.8 yards per opening drive last year (29th); they have to come more ready to play this year; they were outgained 66-36 on opening drive of each half. They had a built-in excuse last year; they won't have it this season.

    5) Saints' biggest problem, other than Katrina-related issues, is that the NFC South is loaded with Buccaneers, Panthers and Falcons, which places six difficult games on the schedule every year.

    4) The Superdome re-opens with a Week 3 Monday nighter with the rival Falcons visiting; keep in mind that Vick and former Saint QB Aaron Brooks are cousins, so both sides will have added motivation on what should be an emotional night. Road trips at the Browns and Packers (both winnable) start the season. There are no road games between October 1 and November 5. Saints are home vs Carolina on Dec. 31.

    3) After drafting Bush, Saints picked two DB's. two WR's, two offensive linemen and a defensive end. They've added depth. New Orleans is one of the smart teams that favors players who played well in college, as opposed to workout warriors from the Combine.

    2) Eventually there will be an NFL team in Los Angeles; the Colts are getting their new stadium in Indy, looks like the Chargers will get one somewhere in San Diego County, which leaves the Saints as the logical team to head to Tinseltown, which may be one of the biggest reasons Paul Tagliabue stepped down.

This will be a very tricky political move, to desert an area that needs the Saints. We'll see how it plays out, but if Tom Benson thought New Orleans was too poor an area for an NFL franchise before Katrina, imagine what he thinks now.

    1) The Saints have to be better this year, just because, Lord willing, nothing like last year will ever happen to them again. They've sold the most season tickets in franchise history, they've upgraded at QB, and they have two quality options to run the ball.

If nothing else, Saints should be fun to watch. Whether that translates to more wins isn't as important as knowing that at least, for three hours a week, the people of New Orleans will have something to smile about again.

    New York Giants

    13) Expectations are high; my cousin KL Wheat, longtime season ticket holder (his tickets are on the lower level) thinks they're going to win the Super Bowl. In an NFC East where distance from first to last place might be one fumbled punt, this will be a pivotal season for a team that got humbled in January's home playoff loss to Carolina.

    12) Last year, Giants surprised folks with 11-5 season that saw team go 4-1 in December; they also had nine home games last year, thanks to Hurricane Katrina, and they won eight of them (in only home loss, they outgained Vikings 405-137, but turned ball over five times). There will be no surprises this time around. Giants will have to be better to be 11-5 again.

    11) Home side won five of Giants' six division games last year; they swept Eagles, but lost at Dallas and Washington. I think they'd take that 4-2 division record again this year.

    10) In thirteen of their sixteen games last year, Giants held edge in average starting field position; they lost two of the other three, narrowly beating Denver 24-23 (outgained by 74 yards) for the only win.

    9) Giants had +12 turnover ratio, taking ball away from foes 37 times (3rd in NFL). They started 25 drives in enemy territory, compared to only 13 for their opponents (+12 was 5th-best ratio in NFL).

    8) If Eli Manning gets hurt, the backup QB likely is Kentucky alum Jared Lorenzen, who looks like a lineman but was a very productive player in the SEC. He's worked hard to control his weight and become an NFL-quality quarterback.

    7) One red flag here is that Giants allowed foes to convert 40% of third down plays; only four of 12 teams that did that made the playoffs. Giants had 37 takeaways (3rd) and forced 249 incompletions (2nd, although part of that is wind at late season home games). If the turnover ratio slips, trouble is brewing.

    6) Giants outscored opponents 68-48 on first drive of a half, so they're well-coached team, despite what Tiki Barber thinks.

    5) Continued development of QB Manning is key to success; Coughlin now has QB coach Gilbride down on field, and
offensive coordinator Hufnagel up in booth. Will fact that Eli doesn't get as many offseason reps with Burress, Shockey hurt them in key times? Remember, Peyton Manning swears that all the work he does in April and May with his receivers helps him a lot once the season starts.

    4) Peyton vs Eli starts the season off with maximum hype, then Giants visit Philly, Seattle before their bye; they're going to be favored in only one of their first six games, last of which is Monday nighter in Dallas. Coughlin goes back to old home in Jacksonville for Week 11 Monday night game, and season ends on Saturday night at the Redskins. Four prime time games, only one at home. Not good.

    3) Much of the Giant hierarchy coached at or attended Boston College; even though defensive end is one of the team's strongest positions, Giants took DE Kiwanuka from BC, a mystifying pick, although he is a good player. They just don't need him, but maybe they have some rule about drafting BC Eagles. Miami WR Moss is always hurt; four of their last five picks were more defensive players.

    2) Tiki Barber ripped the coaches publicly after the Carolina loss, then got free pass from the media; imagine if Shockey or Strahan had done that? Coughlin fixed Barber's fumbling problem, so it isn't a reach to say that Coughlin is responsible for making Tiki a star. Some thanks he gets.

    1) My opinion is that home playoff losses are very tough to bounce back from, and even harder when team's star player publicly thrashes the coaches afterwards. All four NFC teams are incredibly fragile; in my mind, Coughlin, while a pretty good coach, is in the weakest position of any head man in this division- I can see the Giants hitting some adversity and spitting the bit late this season, especially if Eli doesn't get a lot better.

      Six-Pack for Tuesday

-- Redskins are 0-3 this summer, outscored 87-17, which reminds us Bob Welch won 27 games for the A's one year, when his spring training ERA was over 17.00. It doesn't matter, as long as they beat Vikings in the opener.

-- In an NFC East that figures to have a very close race, it bears mentioning that the defending champ Giants will only have eight home games this year, not nine like last season. And yes, if they had played the Saints in New Orleans, they would have lost- Giants won three road games last year, two in December, the other against the 49ers. .

-- 61 guys have made $1M+ this year on the pro golf tour. #125 on the PGA money list is JP Hayes, with $511,000 in earnings; #126 is Brad Faxon, with $504, 281. All of which means, if you made half a million on Tour this year, you flunked out and have to go back to Q School.

-- Did the Mets really need Shawn Green?

-- Reds' infielder Rich Aurilia was once a stagehand at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

-- God, I feel old; the new QB coach at Baylor is the son of Wade Phillips, grandson of O.A. (Bum) Phillips.

                      Hot streaks

Carlos Zambrano (Chicago Cubs) - Zambrano allowed two runs in seven innings in his last outing, becoming the first 14-game winner in the NL. He is undefeated in his last three starts while allowing just four earned runs over that stretch. Zambrano, a -139 road favorite today, has made 14 career appearances, including 12 starts, against the Pirates, going 7-3 with a 3.75 ERA.

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) - The most consistant pitcher on the Yanks staff, Wang is 15-5 with a 3.81 ERA and a sleeper pick for the AL Cy Young. He has won his last two starts and is 3-1 with a 4.02 ERA in the month of August. The Yankees host the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers today, with New York listed as a -161 favorite.

Steve Trachsel (New York Mets) - With an ERA of 5.00, you wouldn`t think Trachsel`s record would be 13-5, but it is. The Mets offense seems to come up big whenever he is on the mound. In his last outing he pitched five innings allowing six earned runs on six hits but still came away with the victory. The Mets as -116 faves against the Rockies tonight and the total is set at 10.

                      Cold streaks

Tony Armas (Washington Nationals) - When Armas is bad, he`s really bad. He has given up five or more runs in a start five times this year while lasting no longer than the third inning in any of those outings. Included in those games is his last start when he pitched just 1 2/3 while allowing five earned runs on 10 hits to the Marlins. He and the Nats are +145 dogs against the Phillies tonight.

Mark Redman (Kansas City Royals) - Redman was 5-0 with a 3.25 ERA in June, then the reality of playing for the Royals set in. He has just two victories in the past two months with his ERA ballooning to 5.85. Kansas City will take on rookie Matt Garza and the Minnesota Twins tonight with oddsmakers setting the Royals as heavy +173 underdogs.

                      Other notables

Eric Milton (Cincinnati Reds) - Milton has just one win in his last four starts but the Reds won all of those games.

Jason Schmidt (San Francisco Giants) - Schmidt is 4-0 in his last seven games but got roughed up in his last start.
