    Six-Pack for Sunday

-- ESPN televised a high school football game Saturday; if that isn't weird enough, there were 10,000 people watching the game in person. On an 86-degree day in August.

-- Game pitted a team from Florida at the team that won last three South Carolina state titles (Byrnes HS in Duncan); on one, play, a Florida kid ran for TD, and did Nestea plunge into the end zone. Play got called back by a penalty.

-- The scoreboard at Byrnes has a $250,000 Jumbotron in it. Seriously, the booster club bought a $250,000 Jumbotron.

-- I am thinking that high schools playing day games isn't real smart, since some kids play both ways, and in summer heat, it has to be exhausting.

-- Remember when Memphis recruited Dajuan Wagner, and they hired his dad (former NBA player Milt) as Director of Basketball Operations? Well, Wagner just got hired as an assistant at UTEP, by former Memphis assistant Barbee, the new head man in El Paso. Does Milt have another son?

-- Darko Milicic's last two games at World Championships: 24 pts, 12 reb/18 pts, 15 reb. Considering those games were against Argentina, Spain, and that the games are just 40 minutes long, not 48, those are two pretty good efforts.

Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.....................

    13) If I had a vote for Manager of Year, my ballot would look like this: AL: Leyland/Macha. NL: Narron/Girardi.

    12) NFL exhibition games are funny to watch; Chargers' game is on as I type this. The sideline reporter is interviewing one of the San Diego executives, young guy named John Spanos. Gee, wonder if he's any relation to the owner? He is one of five Spanos family members in the front office; he graduated from Wake Forest just four years ago.

    11) Packers are going into this season with two rookies at the guard positions. That should be interesting to follow.

    10) Only six NFL teams go away to training camp now; rest of them train at their normal practice facility.

    9) The NBA should switch to international rules, except they should keep the games 48 minutes long. The Worlds are more fun to watch than any NBA game, including the playoffs.

If you're going to Saratoga for a day at the races, here are some helpful tips......
    8) It is best to have a reserved grandstand seat; this covers you in case of rain (it rains lot more in Saratoga than in other parts of this area, for whatever reason), a seat and a view of race replays. Of course, you can still have lot of fun at the track by simply having a picnic out in the back, and never even seeing a horse.

    7) I always have a Chipwich sandwich at the track, in honor of my cousin KLWheat, who once berated the Chipwich girl because the ice cream treat was too expensive. Of course, he had just bet $200 on the first race, so money shouldn't have been an object, still……

    6) It is better to walk a little farther and pay less for parking; the closer you get to the track, the more ridiculous parking prices are. On Travers Day, parking can be as much as $25, to shoehorn your car into someone's backyard.

    5) If you're going on a Sunday, they'll be giving something away. Get there very early, in order to avoid 20-30 minute wait in line; either that, or shell out extra $2 to get into clubhouse, saving long wait. Only bad thing about the clubhouse is if you bring a cooler, it can't come in clubhouse, so someone will have to wait in the General Admission line to bring it in.

    4) Don't shy away from giveaway days, since they give away decent stuff. Hats, t-shirts, bags, bobbleheads-whatever they give out is usually pretty good quality.

    3) You have your choice of fun after the track; within walking distance is either Siro's ( most popular place) or Horseshoe (more casual, more locals). If you actually go into Saratoga, try the Stadium Café for quality food and satellite TV. Plus, there's a good Borders bookstore right next door. There's also a Racino, which has slot machines, live harness racing and good bands (on Friday/Saturday nights).

    2) You're not oiffically at the racetrack until you seem some rich dude with white shoes, white pants, white dress shirt and a pastel colored sportscoat (Friday's was shocking pink). It is amazing what you can wear when you've got deep pockets.

    1) Saratoga in summer is a fun place to be; you never know if you'll be rubbing elbows with a celebrity, or someone acting like one. Lot of rich guys all over, which means there are lot of attractive women nearby. All in all, good place to hang out, catch some fresh air, and relax.

Isn't that what summer is all about?

            Dunkel Index - MLB

            Sunday, August 27

            Oakland at Texas
We'll stay with the A's again today as Oakland is listed as a Vegas underdog again despite taking the first two games of the series behind superior pitching from Barry Zito and Joe Blanton. The task gets no easier for Texas today against Dan Haren (12-9, 3.79), who has won his last six decisions including three on the road. Recent fortune has not been so kind for Texas starter Vicente Padilla, who has gone 2-3 with a 5.14 ERA over his last six starts during which opponents are hitting a healthy .309 off him. With Oakland playing its best baseball of the season, the A's look like another solid play in this one according to Dunkel, which has Oakland favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Oakland (+1 1/2).. Here are all of today's games.

Hey Spark, just like Udog, I love helping out. If any info we give helps guys cap their own games and not turn to guys like Jim Heist, Glen Mc Screw or Scotty never Right-zer, then I'm all for it.

                        alright, let's get to biz

                        hot streaks

                        Hot streaks:

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - Peavy has turned around what has otherwise been a disappointing season. The right-hander has a 2.14 ERA over his last three starts with 24 strikeouts in 21 innings for the Padres, who are -119 road favorites today against the Colorado Rockies.

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) - Capuano has been virtually unhittable for the Brewers lately, posting a 0.95 ERA since August 7 without dropping a decision. Over that same span Capuano has a stellar 0.79 WHIP for the Brewers, who are priced as +102 underdogs against the Florida Marlins today.

Kyle Lohse (Cincinnati Reds) - Lohse has been lights-out since coming over to the Reds from the Minnesota Twins at the end of July. Not only is Lohse undefeated as a Red, but he has a miniscule 0.84 ERA over his last three starts. The Reds are +117 underdogs as they take on the San Francisco Giants today.

                        Cold streaks:

Shawn Chacon (Pittsburgh Pirates) - Allow an OBP against of .474 and a WHIP of 2.14 and you`ll be written up as a cold streaking starter. Chacon has done just that, and Pirates backers are seeing the consequences at the books. The former Yankee brings his 6.94 August ERA into today`s game for Pittsburgh, who are +105 home underdogs against the Houston Astros.

Carlos Silva (Minnesota Twins) - Silva hasn`t won too much coin recently, putting up a 7.02 ERA over three starts without picking up a win. The 27-year old has been brutal on the road in 2006, posting a 8.58 ERA away from the Metrodome with a 3-6 record. The Twins are +131 underdogs today against Mark Buehrle and the Chicago White Sox.

John Maine (New York Mets) - Maine and Mets backers can thank their big bats for their -134 price today as they take on the Philadelphia Phillies at Shea Stadium. Maine has an inflated 7.16 ERA over his last three starts.

                        Other notables:

Kenny Rogers (Detroit Tigers) - Rogers has a 0.95 ERA in his last three starts with a .240 OBP against.

New York Yankees at L.A. Angels: Angels -108

Subtract Aug. 16 from the calendar and Joe Saunders has a 4-0 record and a 1.38 ERA for the 2006 season. The Angels are also up 5.32 units over Saunders’ "other" starts.

The left-hander has worked with pitching coach Bud Black to avoid another start like the one he had preceding one of the Texas beanball massacres.

“Me and [Black] had been working on some drills in the bullpen with me staying over the rubber a little longer and staying back to let my arm catch up,” Saunders told The San Gabriel Valley Tribune. “That`s been my nemesis my whole career is rushing with my arm trailing, and then I leave it up and outside to right-handed hitters.”

Jeffrey Karstens makes his second MLB start for the exhausted boys from the Bronx.

The Yankees are 1-4 on the west coast since sweeping the Red Sox in Fenway last weekend and are already looking forward to Monday’s day off.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis: Cardinals (-1 ½) +128

The Cardinals have finally turned their luck around against the Cubs. 4-11 versus their weaker NL Central rivals before last Sunday’s game, St. Louis has beaten Chicago in three straight games to cling to their division lead.

Left-hander Les Walrond makes his first MLB start tonight for the Cubs after seven relief appearances for the Royals in 2003. While many ‘cappers like backing southpaws on their initial spin through the bigs, Walrond’s debut is the result of a decimated Cubs rotation rather than overwhelming talent begging to be displayed on a nationally televised stage.

Walrond, 29, was a non-roster invitee to spring training but managed to compile a 9-3 record in 20 starts with Triple-A Iowa.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that tonight marks the 56th start by a rookie for the Cubs this year. The squad has six pitchers on various disabled lists and two others listed as day-to-day.

                          Oakland at Texas: A’s +103

The Athletics won games on Friday and Saturday to seize an 8-7 season series lead over the Rangers. They will start their hottest pitcher tonight to complete the sweep before heading home.

Danny Haren is 6-0 over his last six starts with an ERA of 3.02 and the A’s have provided backers with 6.11 units over those starts. Even when Haren got rocked in his last start the Oakland bats came to his defense.

Vicente Padilla starts for favored Texas and his Rangers have lost the last three Padilla starts as favorites. The right-hander allowed 27 hits and 17 runs in only 14 combined innings over those outings.

The Dallas Morning News sums up the attitude in Texas following the recent Oakland wins in Arlington. The paper reports that in the past, although a team has overcome an eight-game deficit after 130 games, no team in MLB history has ever overcome a nine-game deficit 131 games into the season. Saturday`s loss put the Rangers nine games back after 131 games.

                            Total Watch

Detroit at Cleveland: Over 9 ½

It’s been tough times for the Tigers recently, but they’ll be happy to see Cleveland’s Cliff Lee. In four starts against Detroit this season, Lee hasn’t gotten a single win and every game seems to get worse for the lefty.

His last two starts against the Tigers were brief and both games turned into high-scoring affairs that played over.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland won’t be happy with last night’s 8-5 loss, but at least it seemed to shake the termites out of the Tigers bats – particularly in the heart of the order. Carlos Guillen was 2-for-4, Magglio Ordonez got a couple of RBIs and Craig Monroe went deep. That’s a good sign for a team that was struggling terribly at the plate.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona: Under 9 ½

                            Let’s talk about Chad Billingsley.

He might be playing in the glamour capital of the world, but nobody’s putting his name up in lights – but they will soon. This kid is pitching out of his mind right now. He’s got a 1.59 ERA in his last three starts and the last time he faced Arizona, he pitched seven shutout innings.

But the best thing about Billingsley is that he’s still fresh. He wasn’t a fixture in the Dodgers rotation until the middle of June and this will be only his 14th start of the season.

For the Diamondbacks, Livan Hernandez should be able to give the L.A. batters a hard time. At the very least, he’ll go deep into the game and keep those shaky Arizona relievers in the bullpen where they can’t do any damage.

Cincinnati at San Francisco: Under 9

Nobody expected the Giants to come on strong at this point in the season, but it’s happening and there’s only one explanation: pitching.

During their current run, San Francisco has won 10 of its last 13 games and, not coincidentally, they’ve recorded a 3.23 ERA during that span.

Not too shabby. And today’s starter, Matt Cain, was a big part of that.

In his last two starts, he’s allowed only eight hits and one earned run, while fanning 15 batters. Both those games ended up over the total, but this time he’ll have the advantage of facing a Cincinnati team that seems to have lost its rhythm in the batters box.

Through the last three weeks, the under is 13-6-2 in Reds games.
