        Six-Pack for Saturday

-- What moron made Rice's football schedule? Owls play Texas, UCLA and Florida State on consecutive Saturdays in September. Good way to get the coach fired. Wow.

-- The Mets' starting pitchers for Thursday-Saturday are:
Thursday-- Dave Williams, second start for them
Friday-- Brian Bannister, sixth start, first since April
Saturday-- Oliver Perez, first start for them.
Not exactly a well-oiled machine they've got there.

-- Red Sox are 11-1 vs Orioles this season, 16-2 vs National League and only 47-54 vs everyone else.

-- Stanford refurbished its football stadium in offseason; in process, reducing capacity from 85,000 to 50,000, for better homefield edge. Dan Marino's only Super Bowl was played in that stadium.

-- In its last five bowl games, Michigan has given up points by boatload: 45-30-28-38-32 points. Meanwhile, Ohio State won its last four bowls. Tough times for the Wolverines.

-- Acquisition of Shawn Green begs question as to whether Mets will deal Lastings Milledge this winter. It also begs a question as to why they didn't Milledge this summer, when they could have landed a pretty good pitcher for him?

Saturday's List of 13: Things that stick in my mind
Things that stick in my head, for no apparent reason………..

          13) I remember being in the dome in St Louis as Tampa Bay tried to score a TD in the 2000 NFC title game, trailing my beloved Rams 11-6 in the final minute. I can remember yelling as loud as I could, not being able to hear myself. I remember hugging people and being hugged by people I had never met. Quite a day.

          12) I remember being 14 years old and going to Shea Stadium for a Yankee-Royal game (they were fixing up the Bronx ballpark at the time). It was Bat Day, but the bastard at the gate we entered told me there was no way I was 14 (I was tall for my age) and wouldn't give me a bat. Even then, they were an evil organization.

          11) I remember going through the Pro Football Hall of Fame, coming outside and seeing Doug Atkins, the Bears/Saints defensive end, standing there, all 6-foot-8 of him, talking to family members. Some of those Hall of Famers come back every year.

          10) I remember seeing my cousin having $20 on daily double at Saratoga that paid $350 for a $2 ticket. Seal Harbor was the second horse that won (this was August, '84). I remember standing behind my cousin, watching him jump up and down as the horse came down the stretch. I never knew he could jump that high.

          9) I remember watching a high school football game where the QB was sacked and fumbled; as the defensive guy ran with the ball for an apparent TD, one of the running backs caught the kid from 25 yards behind, and not only tackled him, but stripped the ball and recovered fumble. Greatest individual effort I've ever seen in a football game.

          8) I remember pushing my friend's car up to a toll booth on the Mass Turnpike, because there was something wrong with his manual transmission. Right then and there, I swore I'd always have cars with automatics, and I've stuck to that.

          7) I remember coaching Little League one night, and trying to decide which kids to sub out halfway through, when my friend's wife, who was standing there, suggested we take her son out (He was our best player). She was dismissed, but her son stayed.

          6) I remember walking into Neyland Stadium for a Tennessee-Alabama game, and seeing the most orange clothes you could possibly see in one day. Imagine a 100,000+ seat stadium with no parking lot; the whole town is a parking lot.

          5) I remember sitting in Buffalo Wild Wings in Knoxville the day after that game, watching NFL games on a satellite dish; I've been in louder libraries (not that I go into a lot of libraries, just making a point). Not a ton of enthusiasm for the NFL on ol' Rocky Top.

          4) I remember being an assistant coach for a high school basketball team that was 28-1; after our only loss, some jerk TV guy tried to stick a microphone in one of the kid's faces, as the kid was fighting back tears on the bench. My friend Ray damn near went after the guy, and Ray was in his 60's at the time.

          3) I remember being on bench for Division III NCAA tourney game when I was in college, one of our guys hit a jumper with :01 left to give us a one-point lead and the win. Joy and relief, all rolled up into one……….

          2) I remember riding up elevator in Madison Square Garden for a Knicks-Cavs game; two of the three refs for that night were also in that elevator. I am 6-3, and I was looking up at both of them. I hadn't realized how tall NBA refs are.

          1) I remember sitting in my father's hospital room three days after he had cancer surgery; the nurse was doing something, and he let out a yell. She thought she had hurt him, so she asked what was wrong. He pointed at the TV and said, "The Cubs have the bases loaded." She looked at him weird.

HEY FELLAS.... ALWAYS GREAT TO SEE YOU GUYS HERE.

FYI: I'LL BE GONE MID WEEK FOR ANOTHER SURGERY ON MY THROAT. THE DRAMA OF BEING A DJ AND WORKING IN SECOND HAND SMOKE.

ANYHOW, HERE'S SOME SOME STUFF FOR SATURDAY.
                          BEST OF LUCK AS ALWAYS
                          ------------------------------------
                          LINE WATCH

Cincinnati at San Francisco: Giants -115

Among all the great young pitchers in the majors right now, it’s easy to forget about a guy like Noah Lowry. But you couldn’t ignore the Giants lefty when he threw a brilliant two-hit complete-game shutout in his last start.

"He knew," said Giants manager Felipe Alou after the 5-0 win over Arizona at -117, "he was in control of the situation all night."

Among all the contenders for the NL West title, it`s also easy to forget about the San Francisco Giants. But Bonds & Co. have turned up the heat and put themselves in serious playoff contention. They’ve won seven of their last 10 games and a shaky Cincinnati squad shouldn’t slow them down.

Minnesota at Chicago White Sox: Twins -130

This is what handicappers are getting at when they talk about “value.”

The No. 1 moneymaking starter in baseball at a price like this? That’s like getting a beer at the ballpark for a dollar. And Johan Santana looks even better when you take into account the Twins bullpen (No. 1 in baseball) and their offense (No. 1 team batting average).

Oh, and did we mention that Jose Contreras is about as steady as a drunken unicyclist on a surfboard at this time of year. Sure the Sox starter can show flashes of brilliance, but he’s given up at least six earned runs in three of his last four starts.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona: Diamondbacks +105

It’s just a quick 1 ½-hour flight between L.A. and Phoenix, but for some reason the trip seems to suck the life out of these clubs. The home team is 11-2 in the season series between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, including a 6-1 mark for the D-Backs at Chase Field.

It won’t be easy for them to keep that going against Derek Lowe, who’s given up only two runs in his last two starts. Lowe was struggling for a while, but when he started focusing on his sinker and laying off the cutters of few starts back, his stuff improved dramatically.

But Lowe doesn’t have a good history against the Diamondbacks. He’s 2-5 in his career against the NL West challenger, including an 8-0 beating last month when he gave up five earned runs in just over four innings. That’s not a good sign for the Dodgers because Arizona loves hitting right-handers, especially at home.

                          TOTALS WATCH

Minnesota at Chicago: Over 7 ½

The Chicago White Sox are starting to resemble the team that won the World Series last season.

After losing two of three against the Twins a week ago, Chicago turned it around versus their division-leading rival and took the final two contests of a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers. The White Sox have got a big boost from their bats scoring 21 runs in their last three games, mostly behind the solid play of Jermaine Dye.

Dye, batting third in place of injured slugger Jim Thome, hit three home runs in the last two games against Detroit and is batting .323 in his last three games.

"It`s the same plan," Dye said about his current power surge. "No matter what you are doing, if you are swinging the bat good, they are not going to let you beat them. It doesn`t matter if I have Paul [Konerko] hitting behind me or what.”

                          Houston at Pittsburgh: Under 8

It’s a good thing ball players wear caps, because Astros pitchers would be tearing their hair out on the mound from the way the team has let them down this year.

Andy Pettitte could be bald by season’s end if Houston doesn`t give him run support. Pettitte is hasn’t won in his last two starts despite a 0.63 ERA, giving up one run through 14 1-3 innings and only 16 runs in his last nine outings. The under has cashed in his last five starts.

"It`s real frustrating," Pettitte told reporters after his last start. "These guys have worn me out all year, and at least tonight when I did get into trouble, I was able to do something, make pitches to get out of the innings.

The veteran left-hander is 5-1 with a 1.70 ERA in six career starts versus Pittsburgh, his best ERA versus any opponent. The Bucs are just 9-33 when facing southpaw starters this season.

Boston at Seattle: Under 9 ½

It seems David Wells is pitching himself back into shape after two impressive starts, including a one-run, two-hit, 2-1 loss to the New York Yankees this week.

"He`s been tremendous, he`s been - along with Curt - our two best guys out there,” second baseman Mark Loretta told reporters after Monday’s loss. "(Wells) kept us in the game, obviously. We would have liked to given him some support. He looked like Boomer of old."

Wells has allowed only six runs in his last two games and will be counted on to keep Boston in the game after many of the team’s top batters have been hit with the injury bug.

Manny Ramirez (knee), Willy Mo Pena (strained wrist) and first baseman Kevin Youkilis (stomach virus) are all listed as day-to-day, although early reports suggest Ramirez will return to the lineup today. MVP candidate David Ortiz had a scare this week after being admitted to the hospital for an irregular heartbeat.

“I was stressing out and dehydrated,” Ortiz told the Boston Herald. “They decided to bring me to the hospital overnight. I was just dehydrated and I’m feeling better.”

                          -----------------------------------------------

                          Hot Streaks

Miguel Batista (Arizona Diamondbacks) - What a difference a year makes. At this point in 2005, Batista was busy blowing saves as the Toronto Blue Jays closer. Now he`s one of baseball`s hottest starters. The crafty right-hander is undefeated in three starts with a 1.89 ERA for the Diamondbacks. They come in as +102 home underdogs tonight against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jon Lieber (Philadelphia Phillies) - Lieber`s resurgence in the second half is the reason that the Phillies are making a push for the playoffs down the stretch. The Iowa native is 2-0 in his last three trips to the bump with a 1.99 ERA. The Phillies are +104 road underdogs tonight against the New York Mets.

Andy Pettitte (Houston Astros) - The Astros are favored on the road tonight mainly because of Pettittes` recent success. Pettitte has a miniscule 1.27 ERA in his last three outings with 27 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. Houston is a -112 favorite tonight in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.

                          Cold Streaks

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - Verlander is tonight`s most overpriced hurler. The young fireballer has an ERA of 5.00 since August 2nd, having surrendered a 1.83 WHIP during that span with an atrocious .412 OBP against. The strikeout artist has only eight Ks in his last 18 innings for the Tigers, as they go in as -122 favorites in Cleveland.

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - How the mighty have fallen. Last night the White Sox lost their hold on the AL Wild Card with a 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins. The good news? They`re only one game back. The bad news? Jose Contreras takes the ball for the defending champs tonight against the Twins. Contreras has only two wins since July 10th with a 6.10 ERA in his last three appearances. The White Sox +119 home underdogs tonight against Minnesota.

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) - The southpaw is winless in the month of August with a 5.00 ERA since August 9th. The Orioles take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays today as sizable -160 home favorites despite Bedard`s recent troubles.

                          Other notables:

David Wells (Boston Red Sox) - Boomer is 2-2 in night games this year with a 6.06 ERA.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - Santana hasn`t lost a start since July 9th, but is 6-5 on the road in `06 with a 3.74 ERA.

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - The 1996 Cy Young award winner 7-3 is at home this season with a 2.73 ERA.

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - Halladay has only one loss in his last 10 starts with a 2.95 ERA in his last three outings.
