Friday's Lists of 13: Preseason looks: Vikings and Patriots

      Minnesota Vikings

      13) Vikings were 2-5 at one point last year, had problems with the cruise boat, and were basically a disaster, but then they caught fire and finished 9-7, which was not enough wins to save Mike Tice's job. Tice is now an assistant in Jacksonville, and Eagle OC Brad Childress was brought in to tighten up the ship (oh wait, maybe the ship reference wasn't a good idea...).

      12) Daunte Culpepper was sent packing, so Brad Johnson (at $1.2M, the lowest paid starting QB south of Saskatchewan) is the man, with Tarvaris Jackson, an Alabama State rookie, the backup. Jackson is from same college league as McNair, Payton and Rice, so don't dismiss him. But for now, Johnson is the man.

      11) Four of Minnesota's six draft picks were defenders, but Greenway, the #1 pick, is already lost for year with knee injury suffered while covering a kickoff in an exhibition game. Whoops.

      10) For all their talk about cleaning things up, they give WR Koren Robinson a contract and he gets a DUI in training camp. Not good, especially since he had a prior history and they should have been wary of him, considering the franchise's recent run-ins with the law.

      9) Vikings started a feud with Seattle by giving Hutchinson a weirdly-worded contract that basically prevented Seahawks from matching it. It gives Minnesota a real good lineman, but will there by repercussions down the road?

      8) Its not often a team goes 5-1 in NFC Central games and doesn't win the division, but Vikes pulled it off last year, losing only 28-3 at Chicago in Week 6. Can they maintain their dominance over Packers and Lions, two teams that also have new coaches?

      7) In three of their first four losses, they had field position deficits of 20,16,15 yards. It is almost impossible to win NFL games with that kind of a deficit. Vikings converted on only 32.8% of third down plays last year (29th), which contributed to their lousy field position, as did opponents' 40.9% success rate on third down (28th).

      6) Minnesota started 61 drives 80+ yards from the goal line; their opponents started only 41, and that's with a +3 turnover ratio. It is hard to go 9-7 always playing uphill.

      5) Only one of Minnesota's seven losses last year was by less than 11 points; it is hoped that the coaching change will make the team a little tougher mentally, and also get the Vikings ready to play more consistently; in their seven '05 losses, Purple Gang was outscored 119-27 in the first half.

      4) In games Culpepper started last year, Minnesota threw 11 more incompletions than their opponents; when Johnson started, Vikings threw 36 less incomplete passes, so they were getting less empty plays, which is part of whyt hey played so much better with Johnson under center.

      3) Vikings went 3-and-out 57 times last year, and scored only 28 TD's; their 33 field goal attempts tied for sixth most in NFL. This is where they missed Randy Moss the most, the ability to score touchdowns.

      2) Minnesota opens with a Monday nighter at Washington, then only play one more road game in next five weeks; their three division road games are all in December, including a Thursday night game at Lambeau on Dec 21 (what genius scheduled that one?) They have a Monday night home game vs New England in Week 8.

      1) Vikings have new uniforms with piping down the sides, and will wear purple pants with their white jerseys. Hopefully, they'll play better than they look. The Robinson situation hurts their passing game. Minnesota is seen as only legit threat to the Bears in weak NFC Central.
      -------------------------------------------

      New England Patriots

      13) Players come and players go, but as long as Brady is QB and Belichick is coach, the Patriots are going to be contenders. 4-4 at one point last year, New England rallied with 6-2 finish to make playoffs, but their season ended in Denver's high altitude. The AFC East isn't strong, so Patriots are expected back in the playoffs this season.

      12) Patriots scored 89 points last year in their three divisional road games, converting 25-48 on third down in hostile environments. This is where Brady reminds me so much of Joe Montana; he is coolest under pressure and rarely takes a hard hit. He makes plays.

      11) Players win games; this is true in any sport, but so far, Patriots' policy of having disposable players (except for Brady) hasn't hurt them. This winter, they let kicker Viniatieri walk to the Colts. Their WR corps is filled with no-names and wannabes. We'll see if Belichick can keep pulling rabbits out of his hat.

      10) New England outscored foes 38-21 on first drive of game last year, gaining 37.7 yards per opening drive; they were outscored 48-34 n first drive of second half, though. Belichick is still a master at getting ahead early and controlling the game's tempo.

      9) Signing Junior Seau is sure sign the defense is slipping, since Miami thought he was finished; Seau almost seemed surprised some other team wanted him. Not sure how severe Teddy Bruschi's wrist injury is, either.

      8) Opponents converted 42% of third down plays last year (30th) higher percentage than anyone except Bengals, Bills. All of which raises the question as to why, of the Patriots' first six draft picks, none play defense.

      7) Patriots forced 3-and-outs on only 28.2% of opposing drives last year (29th); they had only 18 takeaways (31st), but because they seldom make mistakes when they have the ball, New England still started five more drives in enemy territory than the enemy did in theirs, and that's what wins games.

      6) Brady, of course, is an elite QB who glosses over many of the team's weaknesses. Pats converted 43% on third down last year (2nd); they scored 5.33 points per red zone visit (5th) and scored 44 TDs, compared to trying 24 field goals.

      5) Patriots seem to have the whammy over Buffalo, and I think the Bills downgraded at coach when Mularkey left. Bills outgained New England 394-273 in Foxboro last year in Week 8, held Pats to 1-7 on third down, but scored only nine points in three red zone trips, while Patriots had TDs on both theirs, in 21-16 New England win.

      4) It will be interesting to see the Patriot-Jet games, with Mangini now in charge of Gang Green, since in last year's meetings, New England dominated the injury-plagued Jets, converting 50% on third down in both games, and outrushing New York 297-81 in the two December meetings.

      3) Of Patriots' first six draft picks, five were offensive players and one was rookie PK Gostkowski, who has apparently made the team. Laurence Maroney is supposed to be a bigtime running back, but did New England have greater needs on defense?

      2) The schedule shows two division games right off the bat, then a revenge game in Week 3, with Broncos visiting Foxboro. The Miami games are in Weeks 5 and 14, with Pats hitting South Beach Dec. 10. They have a Monday night game at Minnesota in Week 8, Maroney's homecoming. Once again, the Colts come to New England, Viniatieri's homecoming.

      1) New England has won three of the last five Super Bowls, so they must be given benefit of the doubt, but for a team whose three titles are all by a field goal each, you have to think, at some point, they're going to regret not re-signing Viniatieri, and not juicing up their defense a little more.

            San Diego at Colorado
The Padres are coming off a big sweep of the Dodgers that moved San Diego to within a game of L.A. in the West. They'll be looking to avenge an earlier series in Colorado (July 27-30) in which the Padres lost three of four. The one pitcher San Diego was able to beat was Jeff Francis, tonight's starter for the Rockies. Overall Francis is 0-3 this season against the Pads. Colorado also is limping home after losing all six games on its road trip while being outscored 38-15. The Rockies look to be a vulnerable Vegas favorite in this one and should allow the Padres to take advantage of the run line according to Dunkel, which has San Diego favored straight up by 1. LINES TO WATCH

Philadelphia at New York Mets: Phillies (+120)

Say what you will about Randy Wolf, but the guy makes money. Since the Phillies starter came back from elbow surgery a month ago, he’s done just enough to send backers home happy in each of his five starts.

Sure his ERA is an ugly 5.61, and yes, he’s gone deeper than the fifth inning in only one of those starts, but you’ve got to believe the seven-year veteran is going to out-duel Brian Bannister – a 25-year-old right-hander coming off a strained hamstring who hasn’t started since April. In Bannister’s five early-season starts, he didn’t face a club with a batting average better than .261. Philadelphia’s team average isn’t exactly stellar, but the heart of their order could rip the heart out of this Mets rookie.

                Houston at Pittsburgh: Pirates (+145)

Every time Roger Clemens takes the mound, he gives the Astros a chance to win. The problem is, the Astros often don’t take advantage. The Rocket’s 2.58 ERA translates to a disappointing 5-7 win/loss record, mainly because Houston is the third-worst hitting team in baseball.

Is it any surprise the Astros have gone 3-7 over their last 10 games considering they have a .218 team batting average during that time? It also doesn’t help that Lance Berkman and Morgan Ensberg have been mired in a slump during those 10 games, in which they’ve managed only five hits between them.

It’s tough to take Victor Santos over Clemens, but at this price, it’s worth a shot.

Minnesota at Chicago White Sox: Twins (+110)

Uh-oh. Don’t look now, but it looks like the White Sox found their bats again. If you saw the way they abused the Tigers yesterday, it’s awfully tough to bet against them today. But then again, if you saw the Twins rout the Orioles in an 11-2 blitzkrieg, you don’t exactly want to side against Minnesota either.

So this one comes down to price. Minnesota, with the best batting average and the best bullpen in baseball, stacks up nicely against the White Sox, especially with Javier Vazquez starting the for the Chicago. Vazquez has an 0-3 record and a 7.71 ERA against the Twins this year.

                  TOTAL WATCH

Kansas City at Toronto : over 10 ½

The Jays had a day off on Thursday to think about the measly four hits they managed against the A’s and Estaban Loaiza on Wednesday. Luckily for them, the Royals’ Luke Hudson has the makeup of the perfect rebound pitcher.

Hudson has struggled this season, especially away from home. The 29-year-old right-hander has an 8.44 ERA in three starts and five relief appearances on the road. Opponents are batting .368 off him in those games.

The Royals bats are also heating up. They’re batting .332 over their last 10 games and will face rookie Shaun Marcum tonight. Marcum has struggled all season, but he was especially bad in his last start.

He allowed nine earned runs on just seven hits in 4 1/3 innings in his last start in Baltimore. It upped his ERA to 6.49 on the season and 8.44 in his last three games.

San Diego at Colorado : under 9

It’s no fun beating a dead horse, Unless that horse is a piñata stuffed with money. And as long as they’re still posting Colorado home totals in the nines, under will be the play.

The Rockies are an unbelievable 21-39-1 over/under at home this season. That includes five unders in seven home games against the Padres.

To top it all off, Colorado brings ace Jeff Francis to the mound tonight. Francis has allowed more than two runs just once in his last four starts, and has a 2.96 ERA at home this season.

Overall, the Rockies have played under in nine of the 25-year-old left-hander’s 11 home starts. One of those overs was in Francis’ first start of the season and the other came against the American League’s Texas Rangers.

                  Yankees at Angels : under 9 ½

Jared Wright just quietly goes about his business for the Yankees. He’s never going to eat a lot of innings, but he’s always going to battle hard and is usually reliable to go at least five.

New York doesn’t have to worry about Wright trying to overexert himself tonight. Randy Johnson’s complete game in last night’s loss gave the Yankees’ bullpen a day off. The league’s ninth-best bullpen (3.90 ERA) has pitched just two innings in their last two games.

Wright has failed to pitch more than six innings in any of his 21 starts this season, so he’s already has his fair share of help from the bullpen in compiling a 9-7 record. Still, the fact remains that the Yankees are 8-11-2 over/under in Wright’s starts this season.

                    HOT STREAKS / COLD STREAKS

                    Hot streaks

Roger Clemens (Houston Astros) - Clemens has been doing just what the Astros had in mind when they hauled him out of retirement. In his last three starts, he`s 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA, averaging just under six strikeouts per game. He should be in good shape to grab his sixth win of the season tonight against Victor Santos and the Pittsburgh Pirates as a -156 favorite.

Jeremy Sowers (Cleveland Indians) - The Indians may have found a soild, middle rotation pitcher in Sowers. He hasn`t been tagged for a loss since July 16 – and his stuff seems to better at night. When playing under the lights, he`s 4-1 with a 3.09 ERA. He`ll look for his fifth tonight against Jeremy Bonderman and the Detroit Tigers as a +109 underdog.

Chuck James (Atlanta Braves) - James has become a welcome surprise for the Braves this season. He`s 6-3 on the season, and 2-0 in his last three with a 1.89 ERA, averaging more than five strikeouts per game. Oddsmakers have him set as a -168 favorite tonight against the Washington Nationals.

                    Cold streaks

Javier Vazquez (Chicago White Sox) - Vazquez continues to struggle on the hill. His ERA has ballooned to 5.13 for the season, and he`s managed just one win in his last three starts. If not for Chicago`s potent offense, Vazquez would likely have a losing record. He will have a tough time getting the win tonight against Brad Radke and the Minnesota Twins as a -121 favorite.

Curt Schilling (Boston Red Sox) - Schilling, along with the rest of the Red Sox, had lost a step or two before this recent west coast road trip. He`s 0-1 in his last three with a 4.22 ERA, and his season ERA on the road sits just above that mark at 4.29. He`ll look to get Boston`s series with Seattle off on the right track tonight as a -162 favorite.

                    Notables

Greg Maddux (Los Angeles Dodgers) - 1-0 in his last three, with a 2.70 ERA.

Jaret Wright (New York Yankees) - 4-2 on the road, averaging just over a walk per game.

Jeremey Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) - 10-1 in night games with a 3.39 ERA
