          Six-Pack for Thursday

-- When was Lou Holtz was coaching Notre Dame, his team was struggling but leading at halftime of an early season game; when sideline reporter asked him what the problem was, Holtz looked at him and said, "The other side gives scholarships, too." Such is state of international basketball today. Lot of good players.

-- Italy outscored USA 26-11 in second quarter and had a 48-36 lead early in third quarter, before Carmelo Anthony took game over and Americans won, 94-85, but make no mistake about it, winning this world championship is going to be a struggle.

-- Italians have no NBA players, but played better than Slovenia (five NBA guys) because Italy was tough in halfcourt game, while Slovenia wanted to run, which is a bad idea against a team with superior athleticism.

-- At this point, any time an American team struggles, shooting is going to be an issue; in first half against Italy, Americans shot 11-28 (39.3%), while Italy shot 18-31 (58.1%). The good European teams (plus Argentina and Brazil) have more guys who can make open shots, so if the point guard can penetrate and kick, they're going to get good looks.

-- So good key to watch, as the tournament moves on, is whether our guards can keep opposing guards outside on the dribble; if not, it compromises the defense and will create open shots for players who can make them

-- The Royals scored ten runs in first inning Wednesday, still managed to snatch defeat fromn the jaws of victory, in a 15-13, 10-inning loss to the Indians. Good grief.........

            Preseason look, Pac-10 football

-- Arizona has nine starters back on defense, eight on offense; a quality QB in Tuitama, who is only sophomore, so this is program on the rise. Wildcats are just 8-26 the last three years, and haven't played in bowl since '98, but that could change this year. This is one of the improved teams in country- they play LSU, USC in their first four games, so that'll be interesting yardstick.

-- Arizona State had bizarre QB controversy in which Koetter finally picked the senior to start, then the players basically vetoed that choice, soph Carpenter was named starter and senior Keller is off to Nebraska. Sun Devils have only four starters back on defense, but Sun Devils are all about offense anyway- they won their bowl game last year, 45-40. ASU needs to be better on road (4-13 vs spread in last 17 as road dog).

-- Cal lost senior CB Mixon (knee) which could expose their safeties, who are new; this is most talented team Tedford has had in Berkeley, though, with RB Lynch a home run threat. Bears visit Knoxville Sept 2; they're only 2-point dog (opened as favorite) and are 16-9 vs spread in last 25 as road dog. Cal is 33-17 under Tedford; they were 1-10 the year before he got there.

-- Oregon is underrated program- in last six years, they've been 11-1 once, 10-2 twice. Ducks have seven starters back on offense, six on offense; they'll have a more mobile QB this season, along with a strong OL. Oregon is 15-4 vs spread in last 19 Pac-10 openers, 24-5 in last 29 road openers; they also covered 15 of last 18 on grass. Oklahoma visits Autzen September 16- Ducks lost 31-7 in Norman in '04.

-- Oregon State has nine starters back on offense, seven on defense; they missed bowl last year for first time in four years. It is up to senior QB Moore to get Beavers back to bowl; he has better OL to protect him this year, with all five starters back for first time since '77. OSU yielded 50+ points twice in last five games in '05, but their whole secondary is back. Beavers had five winning years in last seven, after 28 losing years in row.

-- Stanford had their stadium redone, reducing capacity from 85,000 to 50,000 to give the Cardinal bigger home field edge (Stanford did cover six of last seven as home fave in the old stadium); they have senior QB Edwards among ten starters back on offense, including whole OL, so Harris' second year on Farm should be better than his first (5-6, loss to Cal-Davis, 1-4 finish). Stanford lost last four season finales, allowing average of 41.5 ppg.

-- USC graduated boatload of NFL talent, so lot of new faces in scarlet-and-gold this fall. Scouts say backup QB Sanchez likely to take job from Booty (has back issues, but will start at Arkansas Sept 2). Only four starters on offense and six on defense return. SC's 29-16 spread mark as favorite the last four years isn't likely to be extended. Trojans visit Arkansas in season opener; they beat Hogs 70-17 last year in LA.

-- UCLA was 9-2 last year, but they won two OT games on road (Wazzu, Stanford), lost 52-14 at Arizona, 66-19 at USC, and won their bowl game 50-38, so not like they had great defense, and five of those starters are now gone- they were last in Pac-10 in rush defense each of last two years. Bruins have new QB to break in, but opener vs Utah is dangerous game. UCLA goes to Oregon, Notre Dame on consecutive Saturdays in October, tough pair of trips. Bruins are 8-3 vs spread as favorite last two years.

-- Washington is 3-19 last two years, as bottom has fallen out for Huskies; that NCAA hoop pool that cost Neuheisel his job probably doesn't seem like that big a deal to U-Dub fans now. Huskies have six starters back on offense, eight on defense that allowed 45-51-44 points in consecutive games last October. In last three season, U-Dub is 1-7 vs spread if they won their previous game. Long road for Huskies to get back bowling.

-- Washington State missed bowl last two years (5-6/4-7) after playing in bowls previous three; they have six starters back on offense, eight on defense and have junior QB in Brink who has started 16 games at Wazzu- expectations are for return to bowl game. Early trip to Auburn will pay lot of bills and be good yardstick for Coogs- they're 9-3 vs spread in their first road game the last dozen years.

              Hot streaks

Jon Garland (Chicago White Sox) - Garland continues to give his White Sox a fighting chance in the AL Central and they remain atop the wild card standings. He`s 2-1 in his last three trips to the hill while averaging five strikeouts per start. Garland is a sensational 10-2 on the road and oddsmakers have made him a +109 underdog today when he takes on Nate Robertson and the Detroit Tigers.

Randy Johnson (New York Yankees) - The New York Yankees have blown by the Boston Red Sox in the AL East and aren`t looking back. Johnson has been a big part of the Yankees` surge and he`s now 3-0 in his last three starts. He is a -153 favorite tonight against Jarrod Washburn and the Seattle Mariners.

Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels) - Weaver is still a perfect 9-0 on the season for the Los Angeles Angels and is heating up again after a string of no-decisions. He`s 2-0 in his last three starts with a 2.41 ERA and is 6-0 when playing under the lights, with a 1.70 ERA. Books have him set as a -138 favorite tonight against Josh Beckett and the Boston Red Sox.

              Cold streaks

Wandy Rodriguez (Houston Astros) - Rodriguez is struggling to find his stuff as the fourth man on the Astros rotation. A 1-2 record and 8.36 ERA in his last three isn`t exactly what Houston backers had in mind. He couldn`t ask for a better situation tonight when the Astros travel to Pittsburgh to battle the lowly Pirates as +110 underdogs.

Jason Marquis (St. Louis Cardinals) - Whenever the subject of struggling pitchers comes up, Marquis` name usually follows. He hasn`t put up back-to-back wins since July 7 and his ERA continues to soar. If the Cardinals are going to hold on in the NL Central, they`ll need guys like Marquis to step up against powerhouse teams like the New York Mets, who they`ll face tonight as +108 underdogs.

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - The Red Sox and the rest of the world have been wondering lately where Josh Beckett bought his talent, and they hope he kept the receipt. He`s not posted a win since July 29 and has a wretched 8.15 ERA over his last three starts. He`s hoping a start on the road - where he`s 7-4 - will get him back to form.

              Notables

Nate Robertson (Detroit Tigers) - 11-9 season record with a 3.71 ERA.

Carlos Zambrano (Chicago Cubs) - 1-1 in last three with a 2.75 ERA and averaged five strikeouts.

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - 4-3 on the road with a 1.57 ERA.

                    Boston at LA Angels
The Red Sox finally got back into the win column last night against the Angels (5-4). Manager Terry Francona has to hope that this is the start of a run that will close the gap with the Yankees. But just getting back-to-back wins will be tough today as Boston has to face Angels rookie Jered Weaver, who has yet to lose any of his nine decisions and comes in with a tiny 1.95 ERA. The Bosox will counter with Josh Beckett, who has not picked up a win over his last five outings and had serious control problems (career-high 9 walks) in his last outing. Boston's misfortunes look like they could continue in this one making the Angels a solid play to cover the run line according to Dunkel, which has L.A. favored by 2. Dunkel Pick: LA Angels (-1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                      LINES TO WATCH

Boston at Los Angeles Angels: Angels -130

Josh Beckett’s July contract extension raised eyebrows in Boston, with his league-leading home runs allowed a major source of concern. He’s 1-3 with a 7.32 ERA in the six subsequent starts and no one’s happier to escape the Boston media than Beckett.

His nine-walk stinker against the Yanks last weekend was perhaps the weakest individual performance in the entire five-game debacle at Fenway, the fourth straight Beckett start resulting in a BoSox ‘L’.

Jered Weaver is 9-0 on the year, the Angels have won 10 of his 12 starts and he’s been virtually untouchable at home. He’s 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA and a 20-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his four starts at Angel Stadium.

Cincinnati at San Francisco: Reds +108

The Giants have won eight of their last 10, local media are heaping praise instead of dung on their efforts and they’re back to within four games of Wild Card leader Cincinnati.

Too bad they can’t hit left-handers. Their 21 homers and .717 OPS against lefties are among the worst in the NL and while Eric Milton was hit hard in his last start, he usually goes six-plus innings. Cincy is 4-1 in his last five starts.

Brad Hennessey wishes his last shelling was as kind as Milton’s. Hennessey managed only three outs against the Dodgers on August 19, allowing seven runs in the process before being mercifully pulled in front of a booing San Fran crowd.

“Everything I threw, they hit,” Hennessey told reporters after the game. “Everything they saw, they hit. I can’t blame it on anything.”

New York Yankees at Seattle: Yankees (-1 ½) +102

“We made him work hard,” manager Joe Torre told The New York Daily News, referring to the Yankees` patience against Felix Hernandez on Wednesday night. “You look up there and it`s 20-something pitches after the first inning. We like to do that.”

That’s not great news for Jarrod Washburn, who gave up six runs in his last start against the impatient Angels.

The Yankees, even without the ailing Alex Rodriguez, are among MLB’s best at hitting left-handed pitching and Bobby Abreu’s insane .576 on-base percentage against southpaws since donning pinstripes is indicative of the team’s ability to wear pitchers down.

On the other side of the coin, the Mariners can’t hit left-handers to save their lives, with an AL-worst .688 OBP. That bodes well for Randy Johnson, who mowed the M’s down in the teams’ last encounter. The Yanks have won the last five games started on the road by the Big Unit.

                        TOTALS WATCH

Houston at Pittsburgh – under 9

Houston’s bats are struggling. The Astros have hit over .300 as a team just once in their last 10 games and have hit .200 or lower six times during that span.

They’re also facing a Pirates team that’s played under in six of its last 10 games, with one push. Pittsburgh will bring a rock solid Paul Maholm to the mound tonight.

The 24-year-old left-hander has been dynamite at home this season with a 3.64 ERA, which has led the Pirates to play under in seven of his 12 home starts.

St. Louis at Mets – over 9 ½

Two sub-par pitchers and a series that’s seen some hot bats is always a recipe for the over. The Mets and the Cardinals have played at least six runs over the total in both games of their current series, combining for 33 runs.

Dave Williams will make his second start as a member of the Mets tonight. The left-hander, who previously hasn’t pitched since May 18, allowed three runs on six hits in his last start on Aug. 19.

The Cards counter with right-hander Jason Marquis. The NL leader in wins earlier this season, Marquis has benefited from great run support all year, as evidenced by his 13-11 record despite an NL-high 5.70 ERA.

Cleveland at Kansas City – over 9 ½

No team in the majors has scored more runs against left-handers than the Indians’ 221. Cleveland will face Kansas City left-hander Mark Redman tonight.

Redman has been ineffective in his last three starts, with a 2.07 WHIP and a 9.00 ERA. One big problem is that the Royals are going to be relying on Redman to eat some innings because they used seven pitchers in last night’s 15-13 loss to the Indians.
