    Six-Pack for Tuesday

-- John Gibbons can't keep physically challenging players; it looks as if Ted Lilly bloodied his nose in the third inning last night. What kind of way is this to run a ballclub?

-- Toronto led the A's 8-0 after two innings Monday, then lost, amid reports Vernon Wells has already said he wants out of Toronto after the '07 season. Sounds ominous.

-- CBS scored a major coup when it landed Gary Danielson to work its college football games. He is one of the best, if not the very best college football analysts.

-- Carlos Zambrano has made 27 starts for the Cubs, and has tossed at least 101 pitches in every one; he seems to be fresh; his RA in last two starts is a healthy 1.20.

-- In last three weeks, from through July 31-August 20, the under was 154-122 in major league baseball (55.8%).

-- Virginia Tech's campus was shut down Monday on first day of classes, as police pursued an escaped murderer who had been spotted near the campus. He was later caught.

How I would run Monday nights

I think it is insulting to an average fan to bring a guy into the booth who admits he never watched Monday Night Football. Oh, he'll go to games now that he makes six figures to do it, but at home, he'd rather watch the Sopranos or goofy animal shows than the NFL. Gee, just the guy we want in the booth.

If we had our way, and ESPN insisted on doing something "different", I'd propose using 19 different guest analysts for their primetime games this season. Most would be affiliated with sports, almost all with football, but not everyone. We think it would be a hell of a lot better than listening to a self-promoting sportswriter who isn't even a big fan of the sport. Bring a guest in, but lets have him teach us something.

Anyway, here's what we came up with for guest announcers for ESPN's '06 Monday night schedule.

Week 1: Two games, two guests.
Vikings @ Eagles-We start out with Jon Bon Jovi, singing star, and owner of the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena League. He is a Giants' fan, he loves football and he could double up by singing the National Anthem.

Chargers @ Raiders- Jack Kemp-We need an old AFL guy for this game; Kemp played for both these teams, so he must have good Al Davis stories; plus, his son Jeff played QB in the NFL in the 80's. We'll tolerate some politicians, as long as they're no longer active.

      Week 2:
Steelers @ Jaguars- Chuck Noll, the most underrated coach in NFL history. He has rarely been heard from since leaving the Steelers. We're guessing there's a wealth of knowledge that he'd love to share, given the opportunity. Look through the NFL Media Guide sometime, and see what Pittsburgh's record was before Noll.

      Week 3:
Falcons @ Saints- Jim Mora Sr, in game between his son's Falcons and the franchise he made a contender during his run as head coach. This is most underrated rivalry in NFL, but Mora could give us lot of insight both into the city of New Orleans and his son Jim. Plus, Mora on live TV has comedy potential that is through the roof. By the way, this is Saints' first game back in New Orleans since Katrina.

      Week 4:
Packers @ Eagles- Chuck Bednarik was last of real two-way (center/LB) players; he was tough guy who is an outspoken, old school linebacker, even today. He played on Eagle team that won the 1960 NFL Championship game vs Green Bay, Vince Lombardi's only loss in a title game. The censor might be busy with Bednarik, but he'd be fun.

      Week 5:
Ravens @ Broncos- John Elway-If not for Elway and the 2:00 drill, the old Cleveland Browns would have been in a Super Bowl or two, they would have gotten funding for their new stadium, and the Baltimore Ravens probably wouldn't even exist. Elway also owns a team in the Arena League, the Colorado Crush. As great a player as he was, we've never really heard him talk a lot.

      Week 6:
Bears @ Cardinals-Phil Mickelson- Lefty is big sports fan who knows the NFL quite well; he'd be good here, as long as he didn't pull an Oscar Madison and tell us, on air, who he bet on in the game. Mickelson lives in Arizona, and this is the nation's first look at the Cardinals' gorgeous new domed stadium in Glendale. If we couldn't get Lefty here, we'd settle for Charles Barkley or Jim Belushi.

      Week 7:
Giants @ Dallas- Lawrence Taylor. Greatest player in Giant history is natural choice to work game between G-men and Bill Parcells, who was LT's coach in Jersey. We'd need the seven-second delay, I think, but Taylor would be very good talking about the Giant-Cowboy rivalry and giving us some classic Parcells stories.

      Week 8:
Patriots @ Vikings- Bud Grant was 0-4 in Super Bowls with Minnesota, but who else has gotten them there? A quiet man, much like Noll, Grant would be very interesting since he also played in the NBA (for the Lakers). Grant favored sweatshirts on sidelines long before Bill Belichick; it would be interesting to hear his viewpoints on the NFL.

      Week 9:
Raiders @ Seahawks-Dwayne Johnson (The Rock)- A former pro wrestler, now a movie star, Johnson played college ball at Miami with Warren Sapp. He has tremendous presence in front of a mike-he could also give us hint as to why the Miami Hurricane alumni seem so much more closeknit than most of the former college athletes. And if Joe Theismann talked too much, he could give Joey T the People's Elbow.

      Week 10:
Buccaneers @ Panthers- Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish is our guesthere; I believe he is from South Carolina, which is where Panthers played (Clemson) before Ericsson Stadium was built. If I knew more about music, I'd probably slide another musician or two in these spots, since they'd tend to be more comfortable in front of a microphone.

      Week 11:
Giants @ Jaguars- Samuel L. Jackson, actor, former host of the ESPYs and sports fan, would be good in this spot. Don't ask me why, though, because its just a feeling I have.

      Week 12:
Packers @ Seahawks- Bart Starr-The MVP of first two Super Bowls, Starr later coached Packers, and tried unsuccessfully to bring an expansion team to Arizona before the Cardinals landed there. Starr is a walking history book for the Lombardi era, when Green Bay won five championships in nine years. Plus, he's a nice guy.

      Week 13:
Panthers @ Eagles- Allen Iverson- As long as he didn't have to practice for the role. AI would be good on TV; he was an all-state quarterback in high school, before he went to play hoops at Georgetown. He'd give us unique insight on being a star athlete in Philadelphia, and maybe Larry Brown would change jobs in the three hours Iverson was on the air.

      Week 14:
Bears @ Rams- Dick Vermeil, our all-time favorite football coach, also someone with fourteen years of broadcasting experience, would return to the Dome, somewhere he never should have left. He could tell us about the Rams' Super Bowl season, and whether Greg Kinnear did good job playing him in the movie Invinceable. We'd really like to get Vermeil on a Lions-Rams game, so we could learn more about Mike Martz.

      Week 15:
Bengals-Colts- Cincinnati and Indianapolis are only couple of hours apart, so we need someone from that area. I would choose Oscar Robertson, who played for Royals, Bearcats in Cincinnati, but also grew up in Indiana-he was on team that lost to Milan High School in the game that inspired Hoosiers. The Big O might be the most underrated hooper of all time, and he has broadcast experience, having worked for CBS in the 70's.

      Week 16:
Eagles-Cowboys-I firmly believe that had Roger Staubach gone into politics, he would have become President of the United States; along with Elway, he was the best QB I ever saw and he's also good behind a mike, having worked for CBS for little while after he retired. With this big divisional game in Dallas, we'd choose Roger over Michael Irvin, who would turn the game into a TO-infomercial.

Jets-Miami- Not only did Don Shula win pair of Super Bowls with Miami, he also lost one to the Jets, in Miami, when he was coaching the Colts. Shula could give rebuttal to anything Chuck Noll said in Week 2, since the two were messenger guards for Paul Brown's Cleveland teams in the 50's. He is also the winningest NFL coach, and he could tell us what its like to watch his son coach at Alabama.

      Week 17:
Giants @ Redskins- Doug Williams, who won Super Bowl playing for Joe Gibbs, would be good in this spot. He'd have lot of things to talk about, including what its like to be a young QB (like Eli Manning) trying to make it in NFL, and what its like playing for Gibbs in football-mad Washington. As long as he didn't sing along when they played Hail to the Redskins, he'd do fine.

So instead of hiring occasionally funny but usually annoying Tony Kornheiser to work every week, I'd hire 19 different guys, and try to learn more about what I was broadcasting, pro football.

Call me stupid, but I think people who tune into football games want to learn more about the game. And besides, tell me the difference between Kornheiser and Dennis Miller, other than Miller not being one of the media's boys?

          HOT

John Maine (New York Mets) - With all the injuries to the Mets` starting rotation recently, some youngsters were forced to step in and New York is happy they did. You have to look no further than Maine for a perfect example. He is 3-0 in his last five outings while allowing a total of just six earned runs including three shutout appearances. New York won each of those five starts. The Mets are -142 favorites against the Cardinals tonight and the total is set at 9 1/2. The under is 4-1 in Maine`s last five starts.

A.J. Burnett (Toronto Blue Jays) - The Jays have actually received their money’s worth out of Burnett lately after he began an injury-riddled season 2-5. He won his last three trips to the mound while posting an impressive 2.70 ERA and striking out 16 batters along the way. Toronto will be looking for some redemption versus the A`s tonight after blowing an 8-0 lead and losing 12-10 last night. The Blue Jays are -153 favorites for the matchup.

          COLD

Shawn Chacon (Pittsburgh Pirates) - Since coming over from the Yankees Chacon has gone 1-1 in two starts with an ugly 10.80 ERA over 6 2/3 innings. In his last start he didn’t make it past the second inning while giving up seven earned runs on six hits. The Pirates have lost three straight entering tonight’s matchup with the Braves and Pittsburgh is just 5-22 in its last 27 trips to Atlanta. Oddsmakers have set the Pirates as +136 underdogs and the total is at 9 1/2. The under is 17-4 in the last 21 meetings between the two teams.

Gil Meche (Seattle Mariners) - Meche has been down right terrible over the past month for the Mariners. He is 0-4 with a 9.80 ERA in his last five starts while lasting no later than the fifth inning in each of those outings. If that isn’t bad enough, Seattle is riding an 11-game losing streak and Meche has the daunting task of breaking that streak against the red-hot Yankees tonight. The M`s are listed as +120 underdogs with the total set at 9 1/2.

          Other notables:

Oscar Villarreal (Atlanta Braves) - Villarreal was brought out of the bullpen for his first start of the season last week. He pitched five shutout innings allowing just a single hit.

Ryan O`Malley (Chicago Cubs) - O`Malley looked fantastic in his major league debut last week going eight strong innings allowing just five hits and no earned runs.

            Tuesday, August 22, 2006

            St. Louis at NY Mets
With the Mets' pitching staff in slight disarray because of injuries, New York's main man has become the aptly named John Maine. Since being recalled from the minors on July 4, Maine has been a steady force in the rotation, winning his last three decisions and giving up a total of just six runs over his last five starts totaling 33 1/3 innings. The Mets are a perfect 5-0 in those starts while outscoring the opposition 29-7. With those kind of numbers backing Maine tonight against St. Louis, the Mets look like a good play to cover the run line according to Dunkel, which has New York favored by 2. MLB total watch: Tuesday`s best bets

Washington at Florida – under 9

Josh Johnson faced the Nationals in his first start of the season, allowing two runs and just one hit in five innings.

The 22-year-old right-hander has only gotten better from there with 12 quality starts in 19 outings and a major league-best 2.84 ERA.

His strong pitching combined with a Marlins offense that’s scored a major league worst 243 runs at home has led Florida to play under in six of Johnson’s nine home starts this season.

White Sox at Detroit – under 9 ½

Thirteen meetings between two of baseball’s best teams has produced an amazing 12 unders. That streak includes the teams playing under in their last 10 meetings.

It’s not like they’ve really been pushing close to those totals either. Not including the one game they’ve played over this season (a 13-9 Chicago win on April 13), the Tigers and White Sox have only came within a run of going over the total twice and have only come within two runs of the over five times.

Both teams will also bring lefties to the hill tonight – Kenny Rogers and Mark Buerhle – both of whom have overcome slow starts to the second half of the season. Both have pitched under in their last three starts.

Chicago and Detroit also don’t hit as well against left-handers as you would expect good baseball teams to. The White Sox rank 22nd in the majors with a .332 OBP against left-handers while the Tiger rank 25th with a .326 OBP.

Arizona at San Francisco – over 7 ½

There isn’t a safer over play than Matt Cain. San Francisco has played over in 16 of his 23 starts this season, including seven of his last 10.

It may seem contrary to play over with Brandon Webb going to the Diamondbacks, but the 27-year-old right-hander isn’t the same pitcher he was earlier this season. Arizona has played over in Webb’s last four games during which Webb has 5.63 ERA and has almost as many walks (11) and he does strikeouts (15).
