      Six-Pack for Monday

-- It still bothers me that Eli Manning stiffed the Chargers; what QB in their right mind doesn't want to play in San Diego?
      Dan Fouts, John Hadl.......Helloooooo?????

-- Weekends don't get any more painful than the one the Red Sox just suffered through. Four losses, the shortest of which lasted 3:41. Unless things change very quickly, the Red Sox will be staying at home this October.

-- Red Sox bullpen allowed 23 runs in 16 IP this weekend.

-- Joe Torre gave up his DH in 10th inning last night, as he put Alex Rodriguez in at 3B; this doesn't happen very often and I think it is part of Don Zimmer's influence on Torre, even though Zimmer is long gone from the Bronx.

-- Manny Ramirez has been walked intentionally five times in the last four games. Varitek's absence takes its toll.

-- Someone should teach David Ortiz how to slide, before he hurts himself. Watching him run the bases is painful.

QB ROTATION FOR MNF - NFL

Saints to use Arena League quarterback

The Saints will split QB duties between three signal callers against Dallas, just as they did in their pre-season opener versus Tennessee.

Drew Brees starts, with Todd Bouman likely replacing him mid-way to late in the first quarter.

Bouman is expected to see plenty of action in the game, as Saints head coach Sean Payton tries to determine who is the best backup option behind Brees.

Jamie Martin took most of the snaps last week versus the Titans, but Payton recently told reporters that Martin is likely be replaced on Monday with Jason Fife, a former Arena and NFL Europe quarterback.

“I might not play Jamie, so I can get Jason Fife some snaps, to find out where I`m at with him,” Payton told NewOrleansSaints.com.

        The Deuce is loose

Saints running back Deuce McAllister makes his preseason debut against the Cowboys.

McAllister hasn’t played since last October because of a knee injury.

“There’s still some things I’m lacking,” he told The Times-Picayune. “You see some things you were able to do maybe two or three years ago that I haven’t been able to with the knee.”

McAllister and Reggie Bush are both expected see time at running back for the Saints against the Cowboys, with McAllister playing at least one quarter.

        Abram the able

Cowboys` first-year safety Abram Elam could see a lot of playing time on Monday, if for no other reason than Bill Parcells has really taken a shine to the former high school quarterback who played college ball at both Notre Dame and Kent State.

During practice last week, Parcells had the 6-foot, 210-pounder running with the second team at strong safety and returning kicks with the first-team return unit.

Parcells told reporters that Elam, whose devastating hit on rookie running back Demetris Summers is still a hot topic at Cowboys’ camp - has a lot to offer.

“He really studies hard,” Parcells told the media. “Extremely, extremely conscientious. Pretty tough. Shows a willingness to tackle.”

Elam wasn’t drafted after college, but tried out for the Dolphins in 2005 before being released. Legal troubles - mainly a conviction for sexual battery – are believed to have stalled his professional career.

        Who is this guy?

One player to look for on Monday night is Cowboy’s rookie receiver Sam Hurd.

Hurd, an un-drafted free agent out of Northern Illinois, was a long shot to make the team at the beginning of camp, but appears to have played his way onto the Cowboys with several big catches during practices and scrimmages.

The fact he has knowledge of more than one receiver position also helps his chances, and it looks as though a big performance against the Saints would solidify Hurd’s spot on the team.

Big names in and out of lineup

Drew Bledsoe is in, but Terrell Owens is still out.

Parcells hasn’t said how much Bledsoe will play, but has indicated only Bledsoe and Tony Romo will see time at quarterback.

Romo took every snap in the Cowboys’ game with Seattle.

        Neutral site game

The Saints are the home team in this game, but it is being played in a neutral site.

The Cowboys-Saints matchup takes place at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Monday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...............

          13) I am convinced that how baseball teams play after August 1 is determined by how much faith the players have in team's front office. Teams with strong front offices are tough after the trading deadline. The other teams tend to go in the tank.

          12) Brian Cashman bought Abreu and Lidle on July 31; yeah, he has the only payroll that could afford such a move, but he still took on $19 million in salary- they could have tried to get by on the cheap and win without Abreu, but they didn't, and the Red Sox haven't been the same since.

          11) Boston, despite being beset by injuries, did very little to get stronger around the deadline; now they're paying for it.

          10) A team like Tampa Bay was 39-50 at All-Star break and showing signs of life; then they trade Huff and Lugo, getting three minor leaguers and Ben Zobrist in return, and the team goes in the tank (10-26 since All-Star break). If the front office doesn't appear to care about winning, will the players?

          9) Jose Reyes signs a $23.5M, four-year deal with the Mets, a money team; Lugo couldn't have been asking for more than that. Should Tampa ownership show the fans they care about winning, just a little? This is why some teams always lose.

          8) Then there's the Reds, whose GM seems to acquire a new pitcher every other day; the damn guy is trying, and because of it, the Reds are hanging in the race, still clinging to a lead in the Wild Card chase. Their front office is trying to help.

          7) White Sox and A's didn't do much around the deadline, but their GMs have solid history of helping their club, so players believe in them. Both teams have played well since the break, because their teams have recent history of success.

          6) Padre players were very upset that Dodgers made several moves to get better, while San Diego cut Vinny Castilla, and did nothing to replace him (Todd Walker isn't third baseman, but they have him there). Padres have been awful in August.

          5) Not sure how to explain the Astros, other than maybe they needed another bat instead of Roger Clemens at $13M for his half season of pitching. Clemens has pitched well, but Astros cut Preston Wilson, and their offense hasn't been good.

          4) Do Phillies' scouts even watch games they go to? Phillies traded for Jamie Moyer this weekend; he is not good, and in a hitters' ballpark like Philly, this could be very ugly. He wasn't good in Safeco, a pitcher's paradise. Phils still have shot at a Wild Card berth, but Jamie Moyer? Eeesh.

          3) If Tom Glavine and Pedro Martinez are both lost to Mets in the playoffs, that makes their pitching rotation OHernandez-Maine-Trachsel-Dave Williams. The NL could be wide open.

          2) Eldrick Woods has won 10 of the 18 majors he's played in, where par at that course was 72; he is 2 for 22 in the others.

          1) Woods is best golfer I've ever seen, but when he's playing well, it is boring to watch-- he has no chance of losing. He is that intimidating. The other players fall apart around him.

            (1) DETROIT [3] | Previous: (1) [3]
            Units: +29.1 | Winning PCT: 0.650 | Run DIFF: +1.17
The Tigers finally hit their first rough patch of the season in taking on a couple of Central Division heavyweights. Team leader Ivan Rodriguez went nuts and lost his cool in Chicago, showing a lack of composure. Detroit’s still solidly in first in all three areas, yet schedule remains challenging this week, with games at Boston and four at home with Texas. Detroit starts week 9-17 against the top teams from the AL East and AL Central.

            (2) NY METS [7] | Previous: (2) [9]
            Units: +15.5 | Winning PCT: 0.612 | Run DIFF: +0.89
Another outstanding week for the Mets had them posting 5-1 record. New York starts the week with a 15-game lead. The biggest enemy for the Mets is complacency, with no other National League team in their area code. Four games in Philly should at least make them interested since they are 36-23 +11.4 units on the road, the best in the senior circuit.

            (3) CHI WHITE SOX [11] | Previous: (5) [14]
            Units: +10.6 | Winning PCT: 0.603 | Run DIFF: +0.85
Chicago picked a great time to get hot in beating the Yankees and sweeping the Tigers. That makes it 9 of 12 for the defending champs, who are playing at 65% clip at U.S. Cellular. The miserable Royals are in for 4 games and the White Sox are 8-1 as favorites of -200 or better. That is followed by intriguing trip to the Twin Cities.

            (4) MINNESOTA [14] | Previous: (4) [13]
            Units: +17.3 | Winning PCT: 0.581 | Run DIFF: +0.54
Major League’s 2nd best bet has six important games at the MetroDome this week, with division rivals Cleveland and Chicago arriving in town. Twins still hoping Francisco Liriano can return by at least September. All the good work in Detroit was wasted with, flat home efforts against Toronto. Minny crushing RH pitchers, posting 44-27 record.

            (5) BOSTON [16] | Previous: (6) [15]
            Units: +6.0 | Winning PCT: 0.586 | Run DIFF: +0.56
Red Sox started week miserably losing three times at Kansas City; however nothing like the haunts of Fenway Park to cure the bats. Boston scored 28 runs against brutal O’s pitching in sweep and regaining ground on the Yankees. Boston has best home winning percentage and incredible homestand this week. Starting with 3 with Detroit and an enormous 5 games with the Yankees.

            (6) NY YANKEES [22] | Previous: (3) [12]
            Units: -1.5 | Winning PCT: 0.596 | Run DIFF: +0.82
After playing superb baseball for weeks, Yankees pitching let them down, giving up 5.1 RPG this last week. Playing Baltimore at home will help, before traveling north to Bean-Town.

            (7) OAKLAND [26] | Previous: (7) [29]
            Units: +11.4 | Winning PCT: 0.556 | Run DIFF: +0.03
Oakland has taken command of the West with 14-3 mark since July 26. Eliminate 14-0 whitewashing to Texas, A’s pitching staff had given up 3 RPG in other 16 contests. Winning should continue with three against Seattle, whom they have beaten a dozen straight times and a trip to K.C.

            (8) LA DODGERS [28] | Previous: (8) [34]
            Units: +1.4 | Winning PCT: 0.525 | Run DIFF: +0.46
The old 1970’s song by Jerry Reed “When you hot, you hot” tells the Dodgers story. Los Angeles is 12-1 August and winners of 15 of 16. Dodger pitchers are dominating like the Koufax and Drysdale era, allowing 2.5 runs per game in current streak. The winning homestand closes with Florida before heading up the coast to face an embarrassed Giants team, whom they just swept.

            (9) TORONTO [30] | Previous: (9) [34]
            Units: -1.2 | Winning PCT: 0.534 | Run DIFF: +0.40
Toronto has a reason to feel better with 6-2 record including winning three times in Minnesota in last eight days. Blue Jays have favorable road schedule at Tampa Bay and Baltimore. If Toronto expects to make move in Wild Card race, it has to post terrific results this week.

            (10) TEXAS [35] | Previous: (13) [40]
            Units: -0.0 | Winning PCT: 0.513 | Run DIFF: +0.33
Rangers trying to stay close to A’s winning last five contests. Chance to move back into 2nd place against visiting Angels before four games at Detroit. Texas starts week up 8 units on the road and down 8 units at home.

            (11) ARIZONA [39] | Previous: (12) [39]
            Units: +4.2 | Winning PCT: 0.504 | Run DIFF: -0.03
Diamondbacks hit the road for a long trip starting in the Rocky Mountains. Arizona is 7th in playing OVER on the road at 56.9%. Currently in 2nd place in the West, Snakes need to start fast in a series, having dropped the opener in the last three.

            (12) COLORADO [39] | Previous: (11) [37]
            Units: -0.2 | Winning PCT: 0.487 | Run DIFF: +0.21
The Colorado organization has to be happy the team still is competing in the middle of August for division title. Efforts have been made to change the make-up of the club, which have been somewhat successful this season. It still boils down to scoring for the Rockies who are 25-15 in games decided by 4 or more runs and 23-14-2 OVER. Big 4-game series puts them directly in the division picture with three wins. Problem is Rockies 1-5 vs. D-Backs at Coors Field.

            (13) LA ANGELS [40] | Previous: (14) [41]
            Units: -5.0 | Winning PCT: 0.517 | Run DIFF: +0.17
Nearly impossible team to get a read on. After miserable 3-4 homestand against AL West contenders, the Angels lose series in lowly Cleveland. Headed to the Big Apple lends little reason to expect anything positive to happen, except the Halos win 2 of first 3 games. With Oakland darting off to substantial lead, Angels must stay within range to have a chance.

            (14) SAN DIEGO [41] | Previous: (10) [36]
            Units: -3.3 | Winning PCT: 0.513 | Run DIFF: +0.05
Padres found out first hand they are not in Mets league at this time, losing three times and scoring 8 total runs. Road trip was salvaged winning at Houston. In order to win the NL West, San Diego has to turn around at Petco Park. Friars are 28-31 at home and the 3rd worst bet in baseball in home park at -12.3 units.

            (15) CINCINNATI [42] | Previous: (15) [42]
            Units: +3.2 | Winning PCT: 0.517 | Run DIFF: -0.25
Another team that is hard to get a solid read on, even this late in the year. Reds can draw even closer to taking Central Division lead with three games at St. Louis. Cincy has done best work on the road with 30-26 record and up + 10 units. Keeping the games relatively close in evidently the key for the Reds who are 43-32 in games decided by 3 or less runs.

            (16) ST LOUIS [48] | Previous: (16) [43]
            Units: -10.9 | Winning PCT: 0.530 | Run DIFF: +0.02
The vultures circling above PNC Park might as well have been for the Cardinals who were shamed after losing all three games in Pittsburgh. With Scott Rolen forced to sit out the series with back spasms, the rest of his team-mates scored 3 runs against the less then vaunted Pirate pitchers. Having posted 4-13 record since July 27 leaves little margin for error with Cincinnati coming to town. Redbirds just another ordinary NL club.

            (17) FLORIDA [52] | Previous: (18) [57]
            Units: +3.0 | Winning PCT: 0.470 | Run DIFF: -0.18
Florida showed gumption hitting the road and winning the first and last games of the two series. Before leaving South Florida the Marlins faced a buzz saw called the Dodgers and lo and behold they get to face them again to start this week. The Wednesday contest is not good news, being an afternoon getaway game, were Florida is just 18-26.

            (18) SEATTLE [56] | Previous: (17) [52]
            Units: -5.9 | Winning PCT: 0.479 | Run DIFF: -0.08
If ever a team needed to stand up and be counted it is the Mariners. After losing four consecutive times in Texas, Seattle has seven games against the other two teams in the division. The first part of the week is not looking particularly bright having lost 12 in a row to Oakland and 10-25 overall vs. the AL West.

            (19) HOUSTON [60] | Previous: (24) [68]
            Units: -14.4 | Winning PCT: 0.487 | Run DIFF: -0.05
The Astros moved up five spots in the Strength Index Poll, largely due to starting the month 8-2 before losing the last two games at home to San Diego. This helped the Astros to re-enter the Wild Card picture. If Houston expects to really make it back to the playoffs, beating the Cubs and Milwaukee will go a long way towards possibly making that a reality, while still 25th in money line wagering.

            (20) CLEVELAND [60] | Previous: (22) [66]
            Units: -19.7 | Winning PCT: 0.453 | Run DIFF: +0.51
OK, the Indians are having a terrible year, but does that mean they have to roll over? Of course not, after winning 6 straight. They can make life miserable for the contenders ahead of them and earn back some of the – 19.7 units they have cost their followers.

            (21) PHILADELPHIA [64] | Previous: (20) [62]
            Units: -14.5 | Winning PCT: 0.483 | Run DIFF: -0.08
Just as the Phillies were starting to play like they had a heart, they lose 2 of 3 to the team leading the Wild Card race Cincinnati. Philadelphia has been hearing it from the home fans and why not with 28-33 mark, losing the most units of any team in baseball at home.(-15.4) Additionally, the Phils are putrid 15-25 as underdog.

            (22) ATLANTA [64] | Previous: (21) [63]
            Units: -16.8 | Winning PCT: 0.466 | Run DIFF: +0.03
The Braves hitters are 3rd in runs scored and 2nd in homers in the NL. The Braves pitchers are 10th in runs allowed and 11th in pitches leaving the yard in the senior circuit. Guess which plays a bigger role in the Atlanta season?

            (23) MILWAUKEE [66] | Previous: (26) [70]
            Units: -9.2 | Winning PCT: 0.470 | Run DIFF: -0.71
Maybe Milwaukee manager Ned Yost should have the players bring their own bed sheets from home after losing another road series and are now 21-38 as a visitor. Brewers have lost 7 consecutive series on the road heading to Pittsburgh.

            (24) WASHINGTON [68] | Previous: (23) [67]
            Units: -8.2 | Winning PCT: 0.436 | Run DIFF: -0.56
It is never quite enough for the Nationals whose last 9 losses have been by 2 or less runs. Nats have drawn the second most walks in the NL, yet have scored 68 fewer runs the Philadelphia, who has drawn two fewer passes.

            (25) SAN FRANCISCO [68] | Previous: (19) [62]
            Units: -13.2 | Winning PCT: 0.462 | Run DIFF: -0.09
After hanging around for most of the season, the Giants poor line-up finally caught up with them. Team is desperate need of a face lift, starting with the left-fielder.

            (26) BALTIMORE [75] | Previous: (25) [70]
            Units: -10.3 | Winning PCT: 0.432 | Run DIFF: -0.84
Don’t the Orioles have somebody in the minors who can pitch as poorly as they guys. Slumping Red Sox scored better then 9 runs a game in sweep of O’s. Only good news to report on this team is 42-29-7 OVER mark in night games.

            (27) KANSAS CITY [77] | Previous: (28) [81]
            Units: -5.4 | Winning PCT: 0.347 | Run DIFF: -1.51
Reality is often a cruel customer, after the Royals won all three home games against Boston. Departing Kansas City only made the 15-44 road record make them seem more helpless.

            (28) TAMPA BAY [78] | Previous: (27) [72]
            Units: -9.3 | Winning PCT: 0.398 | Run DIFF: -1.03
Heading to the West Coast has been a real problem for the D-Rays after losing six in a row this past week. That brings their overall record to 5-21 against the AL West. At least they can return home to the West side of Florida this week.

            (29) CHICAGO CUBS [82] | Previous: (29) [81]
            Units: -15.9 | Winning PCT: 0.419 | Run DIFF: -0.97
Did you realize the Cubs are 37-63 with all other pitchers not named Zambrano?

Let’s focus on the positive here. Pittsburgh is now 31-28 at PNC Park and the bullpen has a home ERA of 3.30 after taking out the first place Cardinals. Now isn’t that positive?

                      Hot Streaks

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - Smoltz tries to win his fifth straight start at Turner Field. He hasn`t lost at home since June 7, and is 6-3 with a 2.99 ERA at home this season. Smoltz, favored at -198 today, is 18-11 with a 3.24 career ERA against the Pirates.

Dan Haren (Oakland Athletics) - Haren goes after his sixth consecutive victory, and his fourth consecutive against the Blue Jays today. Haren has won five in a row and held opponents to a combined six runs - five earned - over 36 innings. The A`s are -114 favorites in Toronto.

Chad Billingsley (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Billingsley is 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA over his last four outings after striking out nine and giving up three hits over seven innings in a 4-0 victory over Florida on Tuesday. The Dodgers are -118 favorites in San Diego.

                      Cold Streaks

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - Cold is a relative term here, but the Tigers rookie hasn`t looked his dominating self in the past two games. Verlander`s attempt to change his mechanics failed to bring the desired results in his most recent start against Boston on Wednesday. Verlander allowed five runs in six innings, striking out two and walking a career-high seven in a 6-4 loss. He is 0-3 with a 9.88 ERA in three starts against the White Sox this season, including a defeat to Jose Contreras August 11. Detroit is a slim -114 home favorite today against Contreras and the White Sox.

                      Other Notables

Andy Pettitte (Houston Astros) - Pettitte is coming off one of his best starts of the season despite getting the loss in it. He gave up one run and four hits while striking out seven in a complete-game 1-0 heartbreaker to the Cubs on Wednesday. The Astros are +111 underdogs in Cincinnati.

THIS IS BRAND NEW FROM WHAT I CAN GATHER. IT LOOKS LIKE IT STARTED ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO.

ONLY THING IS DUE TO THE COMPILATION OF STATS, IT'S BASED ON LAST WEEKS PERFORMANCE. I NOTICED THE WRITE UP ON THE YANKS WAS GOING INTO GAME 1 VS BOSTON, SO I'M GUESSING THE STRENGTH INDEX COMES OUT ON THE WEEKEND. SAFE TO SAY IT'LL BE OUT ON MONDAYS.
