      Six-Pack for Sunday

-- Red Sox gave up 36 runs in their first three games against Bronx this weekend, first time since 1984 they allowed 10+ runs three games in row, and first time they've ever allowed 12+ runs three games in row at Fenway.

-- Meanwhile, White Sox-Twins split first two games of a series that is equally important as the one in Boston, even if our nation's media could care less about it.

-- Damon Allen of Toronto Argonauts, Marcus' brother, is in his 22nd year as a CFL quarterback; Saturday, he became the second pro QB to ever pass the 70,000-yard plateau, as he led his Argonauts to a 31-6 upset win over Montreal. Warren Moon is the other pro QB with 70,000+ passing yds

-- Final from Friday night: Bengals 44, Bills 31. Haven't had the time to make sense of that score yet.

-- Vikings are wearing purple pants with their white jerseys this year; they look like the TCU Horned Frogs, except that TCU isn't an NFL team. NFL uniforms should be nicer.

-- Patriot-Cardinal game matched up two biggest favorites from Week 1 in regular season; after watching Cardinals, hard to imagine them favored by 7.5 points over anyone.

        Sunday's List of 13: Hey, I didn't know that..............

        13) You don't screw around with Bill Parcells; Terrell Owens found that out this weekend.

        12) When he was coaching Giants to pair of Super Bowl titles, Parcells was famous for knowing which buttons to push with what players. Well, Owens is getting his pushed right now; it will be interesting to see how he reacts to it.

        11) Owens seems to have staged his " injury" to appear for first time as a Cowboy on Monday night football this week, when Cowboys visit the Saints in Shreveport. Well, it ain't quite going to happen that way, as Parcells said that Owens will sit Monday's game out, since he hasn't practiced enough.

Take that, TO. Next time you want to sit on an exercise bike and make a joke out of practice, keep in mind that Parcells is a master psychologist. And he isn't going to be embarrassed.

        10) By the way, that means Owens' Cowboy debut will come in Texas Stadium against the 49ers, of all teams.

        9) Trev Alberts, who walked away from a $300K a year job at ESPN last year, is now at CSTV, where he will do one game a week in booth, and also have weekly show. Hopefully, we'll have more college football on our DirecTV this fall, thanks to CSTV and Fox Sports.

        8) If you want to credit someone with Penn State's resurgence in football (other than Michael Robinson) credit goes to the offensive coordinator Galen Hall. Before Hall got to Penn St, Lions were ranked 103rd in offense. Last year? Number 33.

        7) Texas Tech WR's practice by catching tennis balls fired at them at 60 mph by a pitching machine.

        6) Since 1989, John Madden's football video game has sales of over $1.5B. Thats billion, with a capital B.

        5) Back in 1944-45, Washington Senators had four pitchers who all threw knuckleballs. Thinking about how hurlers today struggle, why don't more pitchers throw the knuckler? A guy like Tim Wakefield has been invaluable to the Red Sox. The '44 Senators were 64-90, but improved to 87-67 in '45.

        4) There were rumors that part of reason Steve McNair has a lot of injury problems is that his off-season workouts weren't as vigorous as lot of his peers. Apparently, McNair amped up his workouts this spring, and could have a big season in '06.

        3) NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is married to FOX News anchorwoman Jane Skinner.

        2) Orioles' 3B Melvin Mora is father of 4-yr old quintuplets.

        1) Nice ceremony at Shea Stadium for the '86 Mets; good to see Darryl Strawberry make an appeearance, as he recovers from his personal issues. We wish him well in his quest.

            Arizona at San Diego
Miguel Batista has quietly kept the Diamondbacks in the t h i c k of the division race. The veteran has not suffered a loss since June 20 -- a span of 10 games during which he's gone 4-0 and lowered his ERA by half a point. Taking the mound today, Batista and Arizona come in a Vegas underdog against the Padres and Chris Young even though Young's stats over his last eight starts (2-2, 5.69) are not eye-popping. MLB total watch

              Toronto at Baltimore – under 8 ½

There will be no repeat 15-run performance today from the Baltimore Orioles. Not with Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay on the hill.

“It gives you a psychological lift when he`s out there,” Toronto manager John Gibbons told reporters. ``You feel good going into the game.”

Toronto is 8-2 in Halladay’s last 10 starts, playing under the total in his last two. The Blue Jays have been keeping runs off the scoreboard recently, with eight of their last 10 cashing on the under.

Halladay will face off against Ontario native Eric Bedard in a repeat of last week’s showdown in which Toronto`s 4-3 win played under the 8 ½-run total. Bedard has pitched the under to a 6-3-1 mark in his last 10 starts, allowing only 13 runs during that span.

Los Angeles at San Francisco – under 9

The Los Angeles Dodgers seem to run out of steam in the batter’s box at the end of a three-game series. Despite its recent red-hot play, Los Angeles has played under the total in seven of the last 10 Game 3s, collecting only 3.5 runs per game in those closing contests. Today’s Game 3 in AT&T Park might be more of the same with the Dodgers giving Derek Low the ball versus the San Francisco Giants.

Lowe’s last three starts have stayed below the total, with the right-hander allowing only four runs in those games. San Francisco will start a pitcher who is also giving under backers a boost in his last four starts in Matt Morris. Morris has been solid on the mound for the Giants, despite going winless in his last six appearances.

Both teams will be facing the biggest total each has seen in their last eight games. San Francisco has played under in its last three games with a total of nine or higher. Los Angeles has played under in four of its last six when facing a total of nine or more.

New York at Boston – under 10

Two of Major League Baseball’s most skilled veteran pitchers will have the main stage tonight on Sunday Night Baseball. The New York Yankees will send right-hander Mike Mussina to the bump to face the Boston Red Sox and Curt Schilling.

Mussina, 13-5 with a 3.54 ERA this season, has been favoring the under despite New York’s powerful lineup. Three of the Moose’s last four starts have gone under, with last week’s game against the Orioles finishing as a push.

Mussina’s counterpart, Curt Schilling, has also been keeping totals low in his recent appearances. The right-hander’s last three games have gone under despite some troubles on the mound.

“He`s a workhorse,” an AL East scout told Newsday about Schillings struggles. “You know he`s going to give a quality performance."

Boston has been able to limit damage on the scoreboard late into a series this season, playing under in 20 of its last 28 Game 4s.

              -------------------------------------------------

MLB hot lines: Sunday`s best bets

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox: Yankees -106

The Yankees have made all the right moves in winning the first three games of their series at Fenway and they’re taking measures to avoid gloating about it.

“They`re Jason, they`re Freddy Kruger,” GM Brian Cashman told The New York Daily News about the Red Sox. "They`re too good. Their organization is too good. In this game, you`re never in control.”

Cashman’s words belie his team’s efforts so far in the series. The Yankees are hitting .361 through the first three games with 19 extra-base hits. Those only look worse when you factor in the 28 walks Red Sox pitchers have issued.

Not surprisingly, Francona has racked up a hefty phone bill from his frequent calls to the Fenway bullpen. Red Sox relievers have already pitched 13 innings this series.

St. Louis at Chicago Cubs: Cubs +150

In a six-team division, St. Louis ranks fifth with its 28-32 intradivisional record. Their 1-8 record against long-time rival Chicago doesn`t help.

When asked to compare the ’06 Cardinals to its predecessors in 2004 and 2005, Scott Rolen simply told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch “It’s not the same team.”

And Chris Carpenter isn’t the same dominant pitcher, either. He threw a complete game shutout in his last start but the Cards lost the previous three starts by last year’s NL Cy Young winner, including his last start at Wrigley.

Juan Mateo makes his third start for the Cubs. His previous starts both ended up in Chicago wins as underdogs, netting 3.28 units in the process.

Arizona at San Diego: Diamondbacks +120

From the “Tales of the Unexpected” file: Miguel Batista ranks second on the MLB money starter list, with the Diamondbacks up 14.39 units over his 25 starts.

That’s largely because of his stellar summer production. The D-backs are 9-1 and up 9.99 units over Batista’s 10 starts since the seasons turned.

Chris Young takes the hill for the Padres, who have dropped the last three starts by the tall right-hander.

San Diego is 1-6 during their current homestand and not just because of its miniscule .196 average over those seven games.

“We`re not playing as well defensively as we were earlier in the season,” manager Bruce Bochy told The San Diego Union-Tribune after Saturday’s loss. “I don`t think there`s any question about that.”

                Blister problem for Twins’ starter
                White Sox at Twins (-175)

The Twins’ Johan Santana takes to the mound against Chicago with a bothersome blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand

The crafty left-hander has been bothered by blisters for the past three weeks and has received therapy to try to harden the skin. But according to the White Sox medical staff, the blister hasn’t improved much this week.

In Santana’s last most recent start on Aug. 15 against Cleveland, the blister problem did not prevent him from throwing eight shutout innings and allowing just three hits.

                Bonds likely out
                Dodgers (-110) at Giants

The San Francisco Giants are likely to be without Barry Bonds this evening when they host the Dodgers.

Bonds left Saturday’s game in the fourth inning with tightness in his back, and Gaints’ manager Felipe Alou told MLB.com the slugger is doubtful for today’s contest.

                NFL

QB Brooks to play entire first-half
San Francisco at Oakland (-3 –105)

Raiders’ coach Art Shell says there is no quarterback controversy in Oakland and tonight he hopes to prove it by not only starting Aaron Brooks, but leaving the veteran QB in for the entire first half.

Shell told insidebayarea.com Brooks can use the whole fist half to work out any kinks he still has with the Raiders’ offense.

“It will be nice,” Brooks told insidebayarea.com. “Any time we get a chance to go out there and play for the duration like that, it`s good.”

                Seahawks flying low
                Seattle at Indianapolis (-2 ½ -105)

Seattle almost has as many injured regulars as they do healthy ones heading into tonight’s game against Indianapolis.

At least nine Seahawk regulars aren’t making the trip, sitting out the game with an assortment of minor and more serious injuries.

Among the wounded Seahawks are center Robbie Tobeck (elbow), left guard Floyd Womack (hamstring), defensive ends Grant Wistrom and Joe Tafoya, as well as tight Jerramy Stevens (knee, out for at least six weeks) and wide receiver Darrell Jackson (thumb).

                MLS

                Chicago lacking Fire power
                Chicago at New England (-110)

The Chicago Fire could be without two of their top scorers this afternoon when they challenge the New England Revolution.

The Fire’s Chris Rolfe is listed as questionable for the game with a hamstring contusion, while midfielder Thiago is expected to miss the game with a hamstring strain.

Rolfe is fourth on the team with four goals, while Thiago is fifth with three.
