        Six-Pack for Saturday

-- You wonder why inner city kids aren't playing baseball? Exhibit A was second game of Bronx-Boston twinbill, the longest 9-inning game in baseball history. Pitching was so awful in this game, you half-expected to see a keg sitting at second base. And these are two good teams.

-- Joe Mauer could hit .700 the rest of the season, but after Derek Jeter hit that bases loaded double Friday night in 7th inning of nightcap, he pretty much wrapped the AL MVP.

-- Just because he is a catcher hitting .360 for a contender doesn't make Mauer more qualified than the media's favorite

-- Travis Lee hit a homer and double in game Friday, and the Devil Rays won!!! Is this a great country or what?

-- Was wrong about John Lackey getting suspended for a role in Angel-Ranger melee; that, and the twinbill sweep in Kansas City made Friday a miserable day for the A's. He did get fined, but wasn't one of the six players suspended.

-- I'd love to know what the powers-that-be in Miami think about Junior Seau's signing with the Patriots, in same week he "retired". Those Miami-New England games will be good

Saturday's List of 13: Preason look: Kansas City Chiefs

          13) The great Dick Vermeil retired after last season, but in an odd move, Carl Peterson looked not within Chiefs' coaching staff, but to a former Vermeil player, Herman Edwards, to take over as head coach. Edwards was three games under .500 with Gang Green, and his clock management skills were often questioned. Chiefs are viewed as better franchise than Jets, so its good move for Edwards. We'll see if it's a good move for Kansas City.

          12) Chiefs were 1-4 in last five road games, with only win at 2-14 Houston; their 14-3 loss at Buffalo, where they averaged just 3.6 yards per pass and had 18-yard disadvantage in field position, left them 5-4 and in such bad shape that their 5-2 finish still kept them home for the holidays. The AFC West is tough place to make a living coaching- chiefs need to be a better road team.

          11) Chiefs swept arch-rival Raiders last year; home team won all four of their games vs Denver and San Diego. Making key third down plays were huge in those four games; Chiefs were 16-28 on third down in their wins vs Denver/SD, 6-28 in losses. Raiders, Bolts both have new QB's this season, while Denver drafted Jay Cutler, so this is good window for Chiefs to stay near top of this highly competitive division.

          10) Defense has often been sticking point at Arrowhead; in '05, Gunther Cunningham's crew forced only 51 3-and-outs on 173 drives, only 29.5%, 25th in NFL; they had 31 takeaways though, which helped forge a +8 turnover ratio. They had the best turnover ratio of all the non-playoff teams, which isn't good news.

          9) As good as KC's offense is, the NFL game revolves around field position, creating short field for your offense, avoiding it for opponents; Chiefs were 8-1 last year when they were even or positive in average starting field position; they were 2-6 otherwise.

          8) Vermeil was great preparer; Chiefs outscored foes last year 37-10 on first drives of game; their 36.8 yard average on first drive was 7th-best in NFL. Edwards' Jets were outscored 38-10 on first drives last year, but they had so many QB injury issues, it is unfair to judge a coach on that. At least for now.

          7) In Green, Johnson, Hall, Chiefs have three playmakers on offense, which helps explain why KC converted 42.7% on third down last year, 5th-best in NFL. Edwards has pledged to get Hall more involved in passing game. Chiefs also had 5th-best red zone offense last year (4.20 ppp) largely because of Johnson's greatness.

          6) Kansas City was one of only three teams to score more TD's (43) than they had 3-and-outs (41); their 24.3% of 3-and-outs edged out champion Steelers as best in league.

          5) One large area of concern for Chiefs is retirement of Willie Roaf; his spot is going to be filled by Kyle Turley, who hasn't been an effective player since he was in New Orleans 4-5 years ago. Turley is now lighter, quicker than he was on Bourbon Street.

          4) Chiefs drafted three defensive players and a QB of future with their first four picks. Alabama QB Croyle is great leader who will have to prove he can stay healthy over 16-game schedule- he was hurt a lot in Tuscaloosa. Chiefs also signed CFL star Casey Printers to back up Trent Green. Ty Law fills a hole at corner, and Michael Bennett provides insurance for Larry Johnson. The Chiefs' front office is very good.

          3) You look at Edwards' coaching staff; eight coaches were on Vermeil's staff last year, eleven are new to the Chiefs; this isn't unlike when Vermeil left St Louis, although Edwards is much better at bringing together a group than Martz was, so that'll help the Chiefs. Gunther Cunningham has to be related to Lamar Hunt somehow; no matter how bad Chiefs' defense is, he always has a job. Amazing.

          2) Chiefs open at home with Bengals, who probably won't have Palmer, then held to Mile High before the early Week 3 bye; they have back-to-back visits to San Diego, Oakland in December- they also visit Cleveland in Week 13. Chiefs host Denver on Thanksgiving night, as part of package broadcast on NFL Network. Only two of their first nine games are AFC West contests.

          1) Carl Peterson surprised lot of people by going out of his way to pry Edwards away from Long Island; I don't think anyone in Jets' Nation was horribly saddened to see Edwards leave New York. Chiefs still have lot of talent, and are viewed as contenders. It'll be up to Edwards to keep the ball in his playmakers' hands, keep his defense guarding a longer field- if he can do those two things, Chiefs are a playoff team.

Who will play and who will pay: Preseason notes

              Saturday’s games

Miami Dolphins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
              Line: Bucs – 2 ½
              Total: 34 ½

Dolphins: Culpepper to see more time

Miami coach Nick Saban said that players who played six to eight plays last week would get about 12 to 14 reps this week.

Daunte Culpepper was one of those players.

The veteran quarterback took six snaps in the Dolphins’ preseason opener against Jacksonville, completing one pass in two attempts.

              Bucs: Chase for No. 2

It will be business as usual for the Buccaneers Saturday.

Chris Simms will get the start against Miami, but isn’t expected to play very much.

The real story lies in the battle for the backup quarterback position between Bruce Gradkowski and Tim Rattay.

Gradowsky has outplayed the former 49er so far, throwing for 104 yards and two touchdowns last week against the Jets.

              ---

              Carolina Panthers at Jacksonville Jaguars
              Line: Jacksonville –2 ½
              Total: 34 ½

Panthers: Increased time for Panthers starters

Panthers coach John Fox said the team would stick to its normal schedule for allotting playing time in their second exhibition game.

"We plan on getting somewhere near halftime with our regulars, and then next week it will be roughly the first three quarters, and the last week it will probably be a series to a quarter." - The Charlotte Observer

Jaguars: Gerrard to start for second straight week

David Gerrard will start again for the Jags in hopes that the young quarterback can mesh with the No. 1 group should starter Byron Leftwich go down with an injury this season.

"We need to see David with the `ones,` " coach Jack Del Rio told the Orlando Sentinel. "We have to prepare for any contingency [i.e., an injury to starter Byron Leftwich], and we also need to keep the competition going."

Leftwich and No. 3 quarterback Quinn Gray will follow Gerrard on the depth chart for Saturday’s tilt.

              ---

Houston Texans at St. Louis Rams
              Line: Rams –3
              Total: 37 ½

              Texans: Starters get increased time

Houston coach Gary Kubiak is planning to play his starters more he did in last week’s 24-14 win over Kansas City.

"Basically, the game plan is to play our starters for about a quarter and a half up to a half, depending on how many plays that is,” Kubiak told the Houston Chronicle “Then we`ll play our second team. Sometime in the fourth quarter, we`ll bring in our third team.”

Rams – Pace may sit against Texans

Scott Linehan plans to play his starters into the second quarter tonight against Houston. As many as eight Rams, including Pro Bowlers Orlando Pace and Leonard Little, could be sidelined because of injuries.

"We don`t want to put anybody in harm`s way if they`re not healthy enough to play a game," Linehan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

              ---

New York Jets at Washington Redskins
              Line: Washington –3
              Total: 33

              Jets: Pennington may miss game

Chad Pennington’s status for Saturday night’s game at Washington is uncertain.

The Jets quarterback missed practice Thursday because of a family illness.

If Pennington is unavailable, former Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey may get the start against his former team.

Ramsey spent four seasons with the Redskins before the Jets acquired him for a sixth-round pick in March.

Jets coach Eric Mangini said he is unsure if Pennington will play against the Redskins.

"I want Chad to make sure he can focus on his family," Mangini told the Star Ledger. "That`s real important. That`s where his focus should be right now. As far as a timetable for his return, I`ll talk to Chad about that."

              Redskins – Starting receiver a game-time decision

Joe Gibbs said it will be a "game-time decision" whether Brandon Lloyd plays tonight. With recent injuries to starters such as Clinton Portis, Shawn Springs and Phillip Daniels, it would not be a surprise if Lloyd sits out.

Lloyd told the Washington Post, "I listen to my body and catch it before it gets bad. I don`t want any pulls, so I think sitting out a day is worth more than sitting out three weeks with a pulled muscle."

              ---

Arizona Cardinals at New England Patriots
              Line: New England – 3 ½
              Total: 37

              Cardinals: Leinart’s Cardinals debut

Matt Leinart will make his NFL debut Saturday against the Patriots. The rookie from USC has seen a considerable number of reps in practice this week.

The Cards’ first-round pick will take over for starter Kurt Warner in the second quarter.

              ---

              Minnesota Vikings at Pittsburgh Steelers
              Line: Pittsburgh –3
              Total: 34 ½

              Vikings: Rookie impressing coaching staff

After dazzling the coaching staff with his athletic ability and strong arm, Tavaris Jackson will take the field in the second quarter against Pittsburgh Saturday.

The Vikings’ coaching staff wants to see what Jackson can do with the second team offense.

Brad Johnson remains the starter and will play up to a quarter and a half, leaving Mike McMahon to take snaps when Jackson is pulled.

              Steelers: Thumbs up for Roethlisberger

Bill Cowher said quarterback Ben Roethlisberger`s status for Saturday`s game would depend on how his thumb responds Friday.

"At this point, all indications are that it`s a day-to-day thing," Cowher told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Roethlisberger injured his thumb late in Wednesday`s afternoon practice, but still may be able to go.

If he is not ready, Charlie Batch will get the start and play for one quarter, with the other three quarters split between Omar Jacobs and Shane Boyd.

              ---

              Tennessee Titans at Denver Broncos
              Line: Denver –6
              Total: 35 ½

Titans: Young will get two quarters of work

Rookie sensation Vince Young will play the second and third quarter at quarterback for Tennessee Saturday.

Jeff Fisher hopes the athletic yound pivot can improve on last week’s performance against New Orleans.

Rookie running back LenDale White will make his season debut after sitting out last week’s game due to a spitting incident with a teammate.

Billy Volek will start at quarterback for Tennessee but will only take snaps in the first quarter.

Broncos: Cutler vs. Young for second and third

Another heavily hyped rookie quarterback, Jay Cutler, will play the second and third quarter Saturday.

The Broncos` first-round pick looked sharp last week against the Lions, throwing for 192 yards in slightly less than two quarters.

Jake Plummer is starting at quarterback and is expected to face the Titans defense for the entire first quarter.

              ---

              Sunday`s games

San Francisco 49ers at Oakland Raiders
              Line: Oakland –3
              Total: 37

49ers: Dilfer back as Smith’s backup

After missing last week’s game to rest his rehabilitated knee, Trent Dilfer will be back as the No. 2 quarterback for San Francisco.

Dilfer may enter the game in the second quarter.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Smith will make the start, and may play a quarter and a half, leaving the remaining three to Dilfer, Jesse Palmer and Shaun Hill.

Raiders: Will Brooks show up vs. Niners?

Quarterback Aaron Brooks struggled Monday night against Minnesota, completing only one pass.

Art Shell says he wants to see an improvement Saturday or Brooks may be pulled early.

"We need better production out of the quarterback position overall," Shell said to The Mercury News We are trying to improve our football team."

Shell is undecided about when Andrew Walter will enter the game, but said the backup quarterback could play up to two quarters if Brooks does not perform well.

              ---

              Seattle Seahawks at Indianapolis Colts
              Line: Indy –1
              Total: 38

Seahawks – Boulware back for Seahawks

Michael Boulware is going to suit up for Seattle Sunday. The veteran safety is recovering from knee surgery and returned to practice this week.

Seattle will be without a number of starters against the Colts. Center Robbie Tobeck (elbow), left guard Floyd Womack (hamstring), defensive ends Grant Wistrom and Joe Tafoya, defensive tackle Rocky Bernard (knee), tight end Jerramy Stevens (knee) and wide receiver Darrell Jackson (knee) will not be in the lineup.

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will start and play into the second quarter on Sunday.

Colts: Offensive starters to get more time

With his first-team offense healthier than last week, Tony Dungy will give the group some time to get familiar with each other.

“We probably will. A little more time for our first group. We’re a little healthier, so that helps,” Dungy told the Indianapolis Star. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see those guys play into the second quarter. As a group they just need to get a few more plays. So probably look at 18 to 25, somewhere in there, with those guys.”

                NY Yankees at Boston
The Yankees opened up their series with Boston in fine fashion yesterday, clobbering Bosox pitching for 26 runs on 33 hits. The offensive explosion was enough to survive even a Sidney Ponson sighting in game two as the Yanks swept the day/night doubleheader. Boston will certainly be looking for redemption today, but Red Sox starter Josh Beckett may not be the guy to cool the NY bats. Beckett hasn't won since July 24 and hasn't gone more than six innings in any of his last five starts. Against the Yankees this season, Beckett is 1-1 with a healthy 10.80 ERA. The underdog Yankees look like a solid play getting the run line in this one according to Dunkel, which has New York favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: NY Yankees (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Game 901-902: St. Louis at Chicago Cubs

                        Hot:

Greg Maddux (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Yesterday we told you that C.C. Sabathia was the hottest starting pitcher in baseball. That was yesterday. Greg Maddux has turned back the clock to 1995 since coming over to the Dodgers from the Chicago Cubs. The four-time Cy Young award winner is undefeated in his last three starts, boasting a 0.90 ERA. The Dodgers are +100 underdogs tonight against the San Francisco Giants.

Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) - The Canadian lefty is undefeated in three starts with a miniscule 1.99 ERA. Francis has also posted a .277 OBP against since July 30 for the Rockies, who are set at -102 tonight against the New York Mets. .

Brad Radke (Minnesota Twins) - Talk about going out in a blaze of glory. Facing retirement at season`s end, Radke is at the forefront of the Twins` push for the playoffs. He`s won his last three outings with a 1.64 ERA. Minnesota is a -109 home favorite tonight against the Chicago White Sox.

                        Cold:

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) - Lackey has been lacking some good starts lately. The big Texan is winless in August with a 6.75 ERA and an awful 2.25 WHIP during that span. Opposing batters have been getting on base at a .464 clip against him this month and the right-hander has given up 13 walks in his last 17 innings. The Angels are -183 favorites today against the Seattle Mariners.

Barry Zito (Oakland Athletics) - Zito has a 5.82 ERA in his last three outings, having surrendered 25 hits in 17 innings pitched with a .403 OBP against. The A`s are -163 road favorites today against the Kansas City Royals.

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - It`s rare that the Red Sox are dogged at home, but that is the case today as Boston hosts the New York Yankees. Beckett has an absolutely brutal 7.00 ERA since July 30. Boston is set at +103 today for Game 3 of its weekend series with New York.

                        Other notables:

Randy Johnson (New York Yankees) - Johnson is undefeated in August with a 3.79 ERA, although he has a 5.00 ERA on the road in 2006.

Carlos Zambrano (Chicago Cubs) - Zambrano has a 4.91 ERA during day games this season, having gone 5-3 in those

Atlanta at Florida – Marlins +100

Why can’t Ricky Nolasco get any respect? The 24-year-old has five quality starts in his last six outings and seven quality starts over his last 10.

Yet the right-hander has been favored in just four of his last 10 starts and five of 16 starts this season.

It’s made him a profitable play as he’s currently among baseball’s top money pitchers (+ 3.35 units). He’ll also face a Braves team he dominated in his last start, allowing just one run and five hits in a 3-2 Marlins win.

Colorado at Mets – Rockies –102

Dave Williams is so bad, the best team in the National League is essentially a pick’em at home with him on the mound against a team that’s four games below .500.

The left-hander, traded to New York from Cincinnati on May 25, was called up yesterday to make his first big league appearance since May 18 in place of the injured Pedro Martinez.

Williams struggled for the Reds this season, going 2-3 with a 7.20 ERA in eight starts. He’s also facing a Colorado team that ranks eighth in the majors with a .276 batting average against left-handed pitchers.

Dodgers at San Francisco – Dodgers –104

San Francisco can’t be happy to see Greg Maddux.

Maddux left Sunday night’s game against the Giants after eight innings and an unbelievably efficient 68 pitches. He had retired the last 22 San Francisco batters he faced, and the only two baserunners he allowed came on a pair in singles in the first inning.

Since landing in La-La land, the 40-year-old has allowed just two runs in 18 innings pitched and he’s also allowed just 13 baserunners during that time. All of this while averaging just a shade over 12 pitches per inning.

                            MLB total watch

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles – under 10 runs

The last person the Toronto Blue Jays wanted to see Aug. 8 was Daniel Cabrera.

But unfortunately, there he was, holding the Jays to just one earned run in and five hits in seven innings of an 8-4 Baltimore Orioles win on a 10-run total.

“This is big,” said Cabrera who had been called up from Triple-A that day. “To come back strong and get a win right away makes me feel more comfortable.”

Of course, no one should be too surprised Cabrera rolled over the Blue Jays so easily. The 6-foot-7 Cabrera has not allowed more than three runs in his last seven starts versus his northern rivals.

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins – under 9 ½ runs

All those games behind the plate are catching up with Joe Mauer.

The Minnesota Twins rookie catcher is hitting only .263 over the last seven days, a far cry off the league-leading .378 pace he set during the season’s first half.

“It`s tough to keep it up,” Mauer told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “We`ve played a lot of games. I`m getting a little tired. My bat`s a little slower and my body`s a little sore.

Mauer’s slump has coincided with the Twins offense taking a downturn. Minnesota is averaging only 3.71 runs over its last seven games, six of which played under.

Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies – under 10 runs

Confidence can be a delicate thing. Just ask Cole Hamels.

The Philadelphia Phillies starter had a 6.14 ERA through his first 11 starts mostly because the youngster was shying away from his curveball, relying mostly on his fastball and changeup.

“During my first few starts, if the catcher would throw down for the curveball, I`d want to go changeup instead,” Hamels told the Delaware News Journal.

But somewhere along the line Hamels rediscovered the pitch and the results have been startling. The 22-year old is going 2-1 with a 2.21 ERA over his last three starts.

“Now I have three top pitches, not just 2 ½,” said Hamels. “Hitters know I do have the curveball. You just can`t sit on the changeup or fastball.”
