IF the Sox keep fading, I think it is Jeter. If the Sox make the playoffs, it is Ortiz.

If the true definition is which player has been most valuable to his team regardless of whether they make the playoffs or not, and Ortiz chips in with some more late inning heroics, I would give it to him.
However, if the definition encompasses making the playoffs(whether it is stated or not) and Yanks make the playoffs and Sox do not and things continue as they do for rest of the season, then perhaps Jeter might get the edge.

Isn't that usually how it happens though?

              My 2 cents

If TWINS make playoffs and Redsox do not...Morneau should be considered also. Mauer gets the ink but Morneau has carried the TWINS offense since May. He also has had many clutch hits in that strtetch.

              JETER($20M)
              AB HR AVG RBI
              464 10 .338 75

              MORNEAU($385K)
              AB HR AVG RBI
              434 31 .318 106

              ORTIZ($6M)
              AB HR AVG RBI
              453 43 .285 115
              Good luck to all!!

Jack, unfortunately, the most deserving doesn't always win, especially when he is someone who most of America still has not heard of. He gets ZERO pub out East....

Not always. Did Texas make the playoffs when A-Rod won it in '03? NO, They were in last place 25 games out.

Bonds in '04 didn't go to the playoffs either.

A DH has never won it and i'm sure won't this year either. The 2 Positions created by MLB that will NEVER be eligible for a post season award are DH and Middle Reliever. The next time either of them win anything by a Vote will be the 1st!

If the award really goes to who is most valuable to his team, it should go to Jason Varitek (obviously he won't win it, I'm just saying). The pitching staff is lost without him. Their ERA is almost a run higher, and the team has been terrible in his absence.
I still think Ortiz would have won if the Red Sox made the playoffs and the Yankees didn't - the problem is that all his key hits this season have been against Cleveland, Tampa, Philly, etc. and Jeter is getting all the ink for doing it last night, while Ortiz has done little in this series.
With that said, I expect Ortiz to do something today to make the race a tossup again.

                        NFL Sides (34-25, +12.15*)
                        NFL Totals (18-14-1, +8.23*)
                        NCAA Foots Plays (65-48-4, +21.47*)
                        NBA Plays (4-1-0, +5.92*)

What i don't get is all the Jeter talk. He's a great player and might be the MVP but ... Mr. Damon was the man who owned Friday's Double header. The man killed us at the plate and in the field. The fact that it was "Damon" just made it ten X's harder as a Sox fan to watch.

                          JD just killed us yesterday!!!!

Savage, I agree with you about Ortiz. In the real a team making the playoffs counts for a few extra MVP votes. There's still lots of baseball remaining.
