        Six-Pack for Friday

-- Nebraska coach Doc Sadler scored two big recruiting Ws this week, when he convinced Jamel White and Alexs Maric to return to the Huskers' program. Nebraska is lot better off with those two.

-- Oakland Raiders are 13-35 since losing Super Bowl to Jon Gruden and the Buccaneers.

-- Tampa Bay's offense is decrepit; they have a 30-year old journeyman 1B at AAA, who is hitting .293 with 35 homers. Would it be impossible to bring Kevin Witt up, instead of wheeling Travis (.215, 10 doubles) Lee out to bat cleanup?

-- When Angel rookie Saunders lost at Texzas this week, it ended streak of 13 consecutive wins by Angel rookies.

-- As an A's fan, how great was the Angel-Ranger brawl on Wednesday? Two teams chasing the A's wasting energy fighting, plus John Lackey is headed to long suspension, especially since this isn't his first scrape this season.

-- Congrats to old friend Steve Sauers, who was named as Director of Basketball Operations at Seton Hall Thursday.

Friday's List of 13: Preason look: Jacksonville Jaguars

              13) Jaguars were 4-3 after horrible post-bye loss in St Louis, where they lost despite 221 rushing yards, +1 turnover ratio; from that point on, Jags went 8-1 rest of way, losing 26-18 at then-undefeated Indy. The problem now becomes: how to maintain this level of success.

              12) First thing you have to do is look at who they beat in 8-1 finish: Texans and Titans, twice each; 49ers, Browns, Arizona and the Ravens, clearly (except for Baltimore) the soft underbelly of the league. They beat NFC champ Seattle in season opener and gave Bengals their first loss in Week 5, but after that, they preyed on the weak.

              11) They addressed need in draft, going for pair of UCLA skill players (Drew, Lewis) in attempt to jazz up the offense. They also need to keep Leftwich healthier, although Garrard did do nice job in filling in as starter (4-1 record).

              10) Jaguars outscored opponents 38-9 on first drive of third quarter, third-best scoring margin in NFL; they held their opponents to 16.8 yards per drive coming out of halftime, the best average in league. Overall, they outscored foes 65-29 on the first drive of a half.

              9) Defense isn't problem for Jags; they held foes to 32.7% conversions on third down, 4th-best rate in NFL and started 28 drives in enemy territory, 3rd-most in league.

              8) Jaguars forced 72 3-and-outs last year on 178 opponent drives; that 40.4% was 4th-best in NFL, and helped create the advantageous field position they enjoyed most of season.

              7) As matter of fact, Jax opponents started only ten drives in Jaguar territory: that +18 ratio was second only to Denver (+19) in league. In only three games all season did Jacksonville not enjoy an edge in field position; they lost two of those three, and beat lowly Titans 31-28 in the third game.

              6) Jaguars' 17 giveaways tied Seattle for 2nd-lowest in NFL; they had +12 turnover ratio, something that isn't always easy to duplicate. Considering they were 6-1 in games decided by less than seven points, their margin for error, as is case for most NFL teams, isn't very big.

              5) Jags must continue to dominate Texans and Titans; they represent four wins a year that are vital in Wild Card chase, as beating out Colts for division title, at this point, isn't realistic. They played all four games in second half of season; Jags scored 17 TDs on 41 drives in those four games, scoring 111 points on 19 trips to red zone (5.84).

              4) But then there are the Colts, who beat Jaguars 10-3/26-18 last year; Jags did force Indy to go 3-and-out nine times in 20 drives, but they scored only three first half points in the two games, and were combined 9-26 on third down vs Colts. That has to get better.

              3) Not only did Del Rio play football at USC, he played some baseball; he caught for Randy Johnson on Trojans' baseball team.

              2) Jaguars open with home games vs Cowboys and Monday nighter vs Steelers, then trips to Indy, Washington; they also have December games at Miami and Arrowhead, and only one home game in October. This year's schedule is lot more challenging.

              1) So Jacksonville continues to chase Colts, while staying ahead of Tennessee, Houston. Del Rio is sharp guy who has his team headed in right direction; his problem this year is that his team could actually be better than last year, and have a worse record, their schedule is much harder than last year's.

                Pittsburgh at Cincinnati
Pittsburgh starter Ian Snell is as close to an ace as the Pirates' staff gets with the young right-hander accounting for over 20 percent (10 of 46) of the team's wins. With the Bucs playing respectable baseball (winners of 4 of last 6) and the Reds under .500 at home for the month of August (losers of 6 of 10), Snell and the Pirates look like a good play getting the run line according to Dunkel, which has Cincinnati favored by just 1/2 a run. Hot:

Jason Schmidt (San Francisco Giants) - The Giants head into their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on a four-game winning streak and send their ace to the mound Friday. Schmidt is 2-0 in his last three starts with a 1.74 ERA for the Giants who are set as -119 home favorites today.

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia is the hottest starting pitcher in baseball right now. The big lefty carries a miniscule 0.78 ERA in his last three starts into Tampa Bay as the Indians take on the Devil Rays tonight. Sabathia has allowed only four walks in his last 23 innings with the Tribe as -161 road favorites for tonight`s game.

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) - Hudson has really turned his season around over his last three starts. The former Oakland Athletic has a 2.75 ERA since July 30 for the Braves and has not surrendered a homer during that stretch. Atlanta is a -108 road favorite tonight against the Florida Marlins.

                  Cold:

Brett Myers (Philadelphia Phillies) - It`s been a roller coaster season for Myers, who takes the hill for the Phillies tonight as a -173 home favorite against the Washington Nationals. Myers has a 8.10 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP since July 29.

Kris Benson (Baltimore Orioles) - Benson is a -107 favorite tonight against Scott Downs and the Toronto Blue Jays. Benson is winless since June 28 with a 5.82 ERA in three starts, having given up seven big flys in his last 17 innings of work.

Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers) - The former ace doesn`t get the value at the books he once did. Millwood has a 5.49 ERA in his last three starts for Texas and is set at -105 tonight against the Detroit Tigers.

                  Other notables:

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - The starter for the National League at the All-Star game in July is undefeated in three outings with a 3.15 ERA.

MLB Total watch: An under-whelming Friday

Washington at Philadelphia – under 10 runs

Ryan Howard is garnering some unwanted attention these days.

This past Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies slugger told reporters he had received a threat after beating New York Mets’ David Wright in the 2006 Home Run Derby.

“He said he wouldn`t kill me; he`d put me in a wheelchair,” said Howard who also told the Philadelphia Daily News the letter was postmarked Scranton and was from a Mets fan. “It didn`t bother me. If he`s writing letters like that, that dude`s got bigger problems than me.”

Still, it may be more than a coincidence that his bat has gone cold since revealing the threat. After hitting .360 with 10 home runs over the previous 3 ½ weeks, the 26-year old went 2-for-6 with one home run in two games since Tuesday’s revelation.

Not surprisingly, the over/under is 0-2 in those two games.

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati – under 10 runs

Pittsburgh Pirates starter Ian Snell bristles when a reporter asks him if he feels he can compete every time he takes the mound.

“Compete? I can win,” Snell told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette earlier this week.

Looking at his numbers, Snell may have reason to scoff. The right-hander has allowed only 15 runs over his last five starts while lasting at least six innings in each of those games.

This includes a two-run, six-strikeout performance in a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals last Saturday.

“I`m very pleased,” said Snell, who has seen the under cash in all five games. “My expectations were to win a lot of games and have good numbers, but I didn`t expect them to be as good as they are.”

Seattle at Anaheim – under 8 ½ runs

Richie Sexson will be in the lineup tonight in Anaheim but his heart is definitely back in the Pacific Northwest.

That’s where his wife is, recovering from an emergency Caesarean section delivery of twins Wednesday.

“It’s definitely tough, but this is part of being a professional,” Sexson told the Tacoma New Tribune after traveling Thursday to join the team in Southern California. “This is my life, and I’ll be home in another four days.”

The M`s definitely need him. They`re the worst hitting team in the American League since the All-Star break, batting .262 and averaging only four runs per game.

MLB hot lines: Friday’s best bets

Toronto at Baltimore – Orioles –104

Tonight is Kris Benson’s fifth start against Toronto this season and he’s had quite a bit of success.

Benson is 3-1 in two home starts and two road starts against the Jays this season and is up 2.31 units.

The 31-year-old right-hander has allowed nine runs in 25 2/3 innings to the hard-hitting Blue Jays which translates to a 3.15 ERA.

Benson has also been a very solid pitcher at home this year – even if his record doesn’t show it. He is 3-5, but owns a 3.56 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP at Oriole Park this season.

Oakland at Kansas City – Royals +149

The Royals are a very backable team right now. They just split a four-game series against the White Sox and they probably should have taken three of four.

Kansas City outhit Chicago 12-6 in last night’s series finale and had a total of 17 baserunners to the White Sox’s eight. They even had the bases loaded down 5-4 in the ninth with just one out before grounding into a game-ending double play.

The Royals have now won five of seven against playoff contenders Chicago and Boston, making a whopping 8.80 units during that time.

Arizona at San Diego – Diamondbacks +116

The Padres enter Game 1 of this series fresh off a four-game sweep at the hands of the Giants. They now sit four games behind the Dodgers for top spot in the NL West.

Sitting one game ahead of them are the Diamondbacks, whose bats are heating up. They averaged 4.5 runs per game in their recent series in Colorado (which apparently is quite an accomplishment these days).

The Diamonbacks’ offense has also been unusually potent in San Diego’s pitcher-friendly Petco Park this season. They’ve scored 14 runs in three games and have won all three, though that series took place back on April 24-26.
