      Six-Pack for Thursday

Some numbers, according to Elias Sports Bureau, espn.com

-- Since 2003, Johan Santana is 35-3 after All-Star break

-- Cubs are the only team without a complete game in '06, but they almost got one Wednesday from rookie O'Malley.

-- Astros are first team since '85 Braves to lose two games in same season that both took 18+ innings to finish.

-- Teams are 320-84 when one of their guys hits 3+ homers in a game; Mets' loss Tuesday ended 17-game win streak by such teams, when Reyes hit three taters in losing cause.

-- Since beginning of '05 season, Dontrelle Willis has most complete games, with 10.

-- Seven of Alex Rodriguez' 21 errors this season came in games when Mike Mussina was pitching.

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.................

        13) As much as we rip the mismanagement of major league baseball, they got this Wild Card thing right. 100% right.

        12) Steve Spurrier has closed South Carolina practices to the public, citing information being put out on the Internet.

        11) Vikings had #1 draft pick Greenway covering kicks in the preseason opener, but he blew out a knee and is now done for the season. Whoops.

        10) Russell Martin homered in 10th to give Dodgers a 1-0 win Sunday night; the last three times a catcher homered to win a 1-0 game in extra innings, it has been a Dodger-- Martin, Paul Loduca and Rick Dempsey, way back in '88.

        9) I wonder how the seven transfers who signed to come and play basketball for UTEP feel about Coach Sadler's leaving for Nebraska last week? They should be able to transfer, if they so choose, and be eligible to play immediately, except at the school where the old coach went to.

        8) The best way to play for a contender in baseball is to sign with the Pirates, then play well; they always trade their best guys to contenders in late July.

        7) A's have a doubleheader this weekend, created by rainout; their last scheduled home twinbill was in 1985. In 1971, they had eight scheduled DH's at home, seven on the road.

        6) Horse named King Palm at Del Mar ran second for 9th time in row Wednesday; he's making lot of money for his owners.

        5) Quick fantasy football tips: Jon Kitna, Ahman Green.

        4) How does Winthrop win the Big South six of the last eight years, come within whisker of upsetting Tennessee this year, and still keep their coach? Gregg Marshall is best-kept secret in America; Nebraska and UTEP should have interviewed him

        3) Four of five Bronx-Boston games this weekend are on TV nation-wide; Tigers must have weekend off, since, as the best team in baseball, you know the networks would be televising their games, if they were playi--- wait, they are playing? Wow.

        2) Minnesota had easy FG to tie game on last play Monday, but Coach Childress showed how stupid preseason games are, by trying for a 25-yard TD pass and the win instead. Like he would ever consider doing that in a real game............

        1) Browns are screwed; they're already down to their fourth-string center, until at least Week 5 of season. Obviously, it is important to have a good center; Cleveland doesn't even who theirs will be, at this point, much less if he's any good.
