      Six-Pack for Wednesday

      The Long Game Edition..........

-- I tried to go to bed early Tuesday night, but Cubs-Astros went 18 innings, then Rockies-Arizona were in the 16th, so had to watch that. I like baseball best in those long, weird games where teams have to use their whole rosters.

-- Cubs used their whole 25-man roster, with two starting Ps pinch-hitting, two others pitching in game. First time since 1986 Cubs had used whole 25-man roster in a game.

-- Game took five hours, 36 minutes; Astros led 6-5 in 9th, but Lidge gave up homer to Murton to tie game. They had to play whole 'nother nine innings to decide issue.

-- Cubs had second and third, two out in 18th and Garner walked Barrett to get to Murton, who singled in two runs. Murton never even got into game until seventh inning.

-- Speaking of which, Chris Burke had three hits, got hit by a pitch and stole a base, and he didn't play until the ninth.

-- In Denver, 13 different relief pitchers combined to throw blanks for total of 20 half-innings, before Snakes scored run in the top of 18th to win game. Long live the humidor.

Wednesday's List of 13: Preseason look at Big East football

The Big East is a 16-team basketball conference, but eight in football, since Notre Dame is too greedy to be in a conference in football (they'd have to share their TV money). Her is look at the conference, as they enter the 2006 season............

-- Cincinnati has to go to Ohio State, West Va, Louisville, and Va Tech; good luck, but they could very well run the table at home. Bearcats have seven starters back on offense, 10 on defense; one thing they need to do better is win when they're supposed to; they've covered just three of last 12 as favorite. Their kicker was 1-5 on FGs outside of 35 yards, so he needs to improve there, to pull Cincy through any close games.

-- UConn has four starters back on OL, four starters back in secondary; all three QBs that played last year return. What they need is better health at QB. Huskies led Big East last two years in defense and they have seven starters back on that side of ball. UConn is 15-4 at home the last three years, where they've sold out 12 games in row. Easy non-conference slate puts Huskies in position to go to their second bowl.

-- Louisville is 28-5 the last three years, but 1-3 in bowls last four; now that coach Petrino is seemingly done flirting with other job opportunities, maybe Cardinals can make noise on national scene. They have six starters back on offense, with QB Brohm back for second year as starter, and seven starters back on defense. Louisville is 15-6 vs spread as favorite last two years, 13-2 vs spread on carpet. They lost 45-14 last year as 20-point favorites, and also lost game 46-44 to West Va, so they need to do better when expected to win.

-- Pitt is in second year of Wannstedt regime; they have six starters back on both sides of ball, have senior QB in Palko, but problem is, in their two-deep on OL, there are only couple seniors, so this is very young offense, despite having senior under center. Panthers are 8-2 vs spread at home last two yrs, but covered just five of last 16 on road- they were 0-5 on the road SU last year, including bizarre loss at Ohio U.

-- Rutgers went to bowl last year for first time since '78, they have to replace graduated QB Hart, so question is, do they go for better passer Teel, or more mobile Lovelace? They've seven starters back on both sides of ball. Knights are 3-7 vs spread on road last two years- they need better poise there, but they showed toughness in 45-40 bowl lossto Arizona St. Much like Pitt, only two of ten on offensive line's two-deep are seniors, so this will be a younger Rutgers offense.

-- South Florida beat Louisville 45-14 last year; this program is sleeping giant, a team with so much talent that QB with 23 career starts might sit this season. Coaches view Julmiste as too inconsistent (remember the 14-0 bowl loss to NC State), so soph Carlton Hill, a Vince Young-clone, is going to get a serious look at becoming starter. USF has six starters back on offense, seven on defense. It'll be up to Hill to ignite offense and get this team to second consecutive bowl game.

-- Nitwit Syracuse fans got their way when Pasqualoni got ax, now those same "fans" would die for 6-6 season, after a 1-10 disaster in '05. Draw a 100-mile circle around Syracuse and tell me how many high school football powerhouses are in circle; this is tough job that Robinson has, especially since he lost seven starters on defense, three of whom got drafted by NFL, thats how bad the offense was. Syracuse is 10-17 vs spread in conference play the last four years.

-- West Virginia's expectations are now so bloated after their dismanlting of Georgia in Sugar Bowl that it'll be impossible for them to meet them. Mountaineers were 11-1 last year, but played terrible schedule- they snuck by Louisville in OT, got waxed at Virginia Tech, struggled top beat ECU and Syracuse They have seven of top 10 back on OL, but QB is still just a sophomore. They play four weeknight games this season.

            Hot Streaks

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - Verlander has been a machine on the hill for the Tigers this season. With a 14-5 record and a 2.95 ERA, he leads Detroit in all major pitching categories. He`s on the road tonight where he`s 7-3 against David Wells and the Boston Red Sox as a -107 favorite.

Andy Pettitte (Houston Astros) - Pettitte couldn`t have picked a better time to heat up. In his last three starts he went 2-1 with a 2.66 ERA and averaged eight strikeouts per game while allowing just one home run. He`ll square off today against the Chicago Cubs as a -185 favorite.

Josh Johnson (Florida Marlins) - Johnson has become a nice second starter to ace Dontrelle Willis for the Marlins. He is 10-6 and averages nearly seven innings per start. He`s a +104 underdog today when he battles the red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers.

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - After a few mid-season hiccups, Smoltz is back to form for the Atlanta Braves. He hasn`t been tagged for a loss since June 13 and since that time he`s 6-0 with five no-decisions. He brings a 3.83 road ERA to Washington tonight when he takes on Billy Traber and Nationals. Books have the Braves set as -152 favorites.

Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels) - Saunders has made a great impression on the Angels staff this season. Since becoming a starter on July 18, he`s won four straight games against some hard-hitting ball clubs in Cleveland, Oakland, New York and Texas. He`s set as a +106 underdog tonight against Texas righty Adam Eaton.

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Contreras has found his groove once again and has been pitching well for the surging White Sox. He`s 2-1 in his last three starts while not surrending a single home run and posting a 3.57 ERA. He`s 7-1 at home this season and will enjoy the advantage tonight against the Royals as a huge -287 favorite.

Dan Haren (Oakland Athletics) - Haren has been next to untouchable lately for Oakland during the club`s amazing run up the American League West standings. He`s 3-0 in his last three with over six strikeouts per game. During that stretch he gave up just one walk per game and lasted almost eight innings on average. Oddsmakers favor his A`s tonight at -184 against the Mariners.

            Cold Streaks

Jon Lieber (Philadelphia Phillies) - Lieber continues to struggle for the Phillies on the mound. He`s 0-2 in his last three games with a 5.49 ERA and has been shaky at best at home this season with a 2-6 record. He`ll be in tough tonight against the National League`s best New York Mets.

Gil Meche (Seattle Mariners) - Meche hasn`t gone longer than five innings pitched since July 19 against the Yankees. He`s put up a horrible 9.00 ERA and 0-2 record in his last three and won`t get any help tonight against the seemingly unstoppable Oakland Athletics.

Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) - After a stellar start to the 2006 campaign, Arroyo has fallen off the map in the pitching world. He hasn`t put up a win since June 19 and will need to get going soon if the Reds are to overtake the struggling St. Louis Cardinals, who he will face tonight as a +128 road underdog.

            Other notables

Cory Lidle (New York Yankees) - 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two starts for New York.

Adam Eaton (Texas Rangers) - 2-1 in night games with a 2.87 ERA.

Aaron Cook (Colorado Rockies) - 2-1 in his last three starts averaging seven innings pitched per start.

              MLB Baseball Picks
              LA Angels at Texas
Angels' rookie Joe Saunders (4-0, 1.67) has been impressive since being called up from the minors. Combined with fellow rookies Jered Weaver and Dustin Moseley, the trio has gone 12-0 and kept the Angels in the ***** of the division race heading into today's contest in Texas. Saunders faces Adam Eaton (2-2, 4.41), who has also been effective after missing almost four months with a finger injury. Opponents are batting just .196 off Eaton in his four starts since coming off the DL. Runs should be harder to come by than last night's total of 16 and that favors the underdog Angels getting the run line according to Dunkel, which has the game even. Dunkel Pick: LA Angels (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                      LA Angels at Texas
Angels' rookie Joe Saunders (4-0, 1.67) has been impressive since being called up from the minors. Combined with fellow rookies Jered Weaver and Dustin Moseley, the trio has gone 12-0 and kept the Angels in the division race heading into today's contest in Texas.

Atlanta at Washington : Nationals +144

Ladies and gentleman, meet Mr. Billy Traber, a 26-year-old left-hander who shut down the Mets in his last start, holding them to just one run and four hits in seven innings.

Tonight he’s going up against a Braves team whose bats have cooled off just in time. Atlanta managed just two hits in last night’s 5-0 loss in Washington as a +102 underdog.

Atlanta is one of the streakiest hitting teams in baseball, and it looks like Traber and the Nationals could benefit from the beginning of a Braves cold spell.

Toronto at Tampa Bay : Devil Rays +137

The Devil Rays fought hard last night, but in the end they couldn’t overcome another strong start from Roy Halladay.

It’s been the same old story recently for the D-Rays, losers of seven in a row, but by a combined total of just 15 runs.

They’re hoping their luck will change tonight when Jamie Shields takes the mound. The 24-year-old right-hander has been solid in each of his last four starts allowing a total of 10 runs in 26 2/3 innings pitched – good for a 3.37 ERA – while striking out 25 and walking just five.

Cincinnati at St. Louis : Cardinals -138

Poor Bronson Arroyo. He just can’t get his 10th win of the season.

Arroyo has now taken the mound 10 times in search of double digit wins and hasn’t managed to get a winning decision in any of those games.

In fact, the Reds have only won three of his last 10 starts, in all of which Arroyo got a no decision. He actually didn’t pitch badly in his first few attempts, with four quality starts in his first six tries.

But recently, the stress of trying to reach the mark is wearing on him. Arroyo – who went as far as to braid his hair before his last start – has a 7.17 ERA in his last four starts and has allowed a total of nine home runs during that time.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------MLB total watch

Chicago at Houston – under 9

The Cubs and Astros don’t have much time to rest after last night’s 18-inning marathon game. The teams meet again this afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. ET.

With both lineups feeling the effects of last night’s game, expect some lethargic performances at the plate. This was Houston’s second 18-inning game of the season. After the Astros and Pirates played 18 on May 27, Houston played under in three of its next four proceeding games.

With their batters exhausted, the Astros will turn to veteran pitcher Andy Pettitte to keep them in the game. Pettitte has played under the total in his last three starts, allowing just six runs. The 34-year-old Pettitte is coming off his most impressive performance of the season in a 4-2 victory over the Padres last week. The left-hander struck out 10 batters and allowed only three hits, playing under the 9 ½-run total.

                        Seattle at Oakland – over 8 ½

Whatever the Seattle Mariners’ number is, the Oakland Athletics have it.

Oakland has won 14 straight games against Seattle, playing over the total in four of the last six meetings. The A’s asserted their dominance again last night, shelling the Mariners for 11 runs and playing over the 9 ½-run total.

“I don’t think anyone can really figure it out,” pitcher Kirk Saarloos said of the A’s production. “A lot of it is luck and a lot of it is we’re playing good baseball against one team.”

Seattle will leave itself open to another beating on the scoreboard when it sends Gil Meche to the bump for today’s game. Meche`s last four starts have played over as he allowed 18 runs including four earned runs in a one-inning showing last week against Texas.

“It was a matter of not being able to find anything,” Meche told reporters after his last start. “I couldn`t find my release point. The focus should be to get the ball and throw it. You shouldn`t have to be thinking about mechanics.”

San Francisco at San Diego – under 8 ½

Two of baseball’s worst hitting teams face off in Game 3 of their four-game series, when the San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants tonight.

Both teams sit 24th and 26th in the majors in batting average and have played under in their last two meetings. San Francisco has only been able to muster four runs in its last three games, playing under the total in eight of its last 10. San Diego has been just as futile at the plate, cashing in on the under in seven of its last 10 contests.

“We really need a key hit and we can`t get one,” Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. “That’s our problem right now. Somebody’s got to come through and help us win a ballgame here.”

The Giants will hand the ball to left-handed pitcher Noah Lowry for tonight’s game at Petco Park. Lowry has allowed only three runs on 10 hits in his last two starts, playing under the total in three of his last four appearances.
