    Six-Pack for Tuesday
-- Red flag for the Mets; they're 2-7 in Pedro Martinez' last nine road starts, in his last five starts overall, he allowed 14 1st-inning runs. Without him, they're in trouble in October.
-- A's are very clutch; Nick Swisher homered in bottom of eighth inning Monday, sending A's to their 12th straight win over Seattle, 5-4. Oakland now has five-game lead in AL West, and with Bartolo Colon out, will be tough to catch.
-- Justin Duchscherer actually picked Ichiro off first to end game Monday, as Street had night off in bullpen. This A's team is now 15-3 in their last eighteen games, and rolling.
-- Cardinals finally signed Matt Leinart Monday; not really sure what he was thinking about, waiting this long to sign.
-- In Colts' 13-0 start last year; they started their first drive of game 80+ yards from end zone six times; they scored TD on all six of those drives. Thats pretty amazing.
-- Our deepest sympathies to golfer Darren Clarke, who lost his wife to cancer this week at age 39.

Tuesday's List of 13: Preaseason look at Indianapolis Colts
      13) Real life intruded on the Colts last year, when teenage son of Tony Dungy tragically died. It was stunning blow, and put everything in perspective. Life moves on, though-- how do Dungy and Colts come back from such a devastating loss?

      12) Once 13-0 and a juggernaut, the Colts stumbled down the stretch and lost at home to Steelers in playoffs; home playoff losses are the hardest thing in NFL to bounce back from, and with Edgerrin James now gone, is the Colts' window closing?

      11) Colts scored 49 TDs on 147 drives last year (33.3%); they had 11 more TD's than 3-and-outs, one of only three teams to do that (Chiefs +2, Seattle +1).

      10) Despite a high powered offense, Colts turned ball over 20 times (5th lowest in NFL); they had a +11 turnover ratio.

      9) On third down,.and this is where they might miss James most, Colts were 91-187 (48.7%, very high); they need Addai or another RB to step up and make plays out of backfield on key third down plays.

      8) Colts were 3rd in NFL in red zone offense (5.39 ppp), and in black zone drives (1.93); they led NFL in green zone drives, scoring 92 points on 18 drives that started in enemy territory.

      7) On first drive of half, Colts outscored their opponents by a 128-57 margin, best in league; 59-27 on first drive of ballgame, 69-30 on first drive of third quarter; their 128 points on first drive of half was 35 points more than anyone else (Seattle).

      6) In Weeks 4-14, a 10-game stretch, Indy scored TD on their first drive eight times, on drives averaging 78.4 yards.

      5) In five-week stretch (wks 8-12, after their bye) Colts scored TD on first drive of third quarter in all five games.

      4) Is Tony Dungy this generation's Chuck Knox? Dungy is a solid coach with career playoff mark of 5-8, regular season, he is 102-58. Knox was 186-147-1 in regular season, 7-11 playoffs Dungy had at least two years where he had best team but did not get to the Super Bowl, much like Knox in LA in the 70's.

      3) When team starts losing guys to salary cap, they have to draft well to fill those holes quickly; Colts drafted Addai as a third-down receiver out of backfield- they then took couple of linemen and some defensive guys. Their defense is banged up early in training camp. They'll have shootouts early on.

      2) Manning vs Manning is the road opener, then only one of next four opponents made playoffs last year- in Weeks 8-9, they go to Denver/Foxboro, and host Cincinnati in Week 15 on a Monday night. This isn't a bad schedule at all.

      1) You have to wonder if last year was Colts' best shot at the Super Bowl; now that James is gone, will offense have same balance that made it so powerful last couple years? Dungy is a solid coach with a shaky playoff resume. They need to get some production from new RBs to keep their lofty status.

            Cincinnati at St. Louis
The Reds trail the Cardinals by 1 1/2 games heading into tonight's series opener in St. Louis. They have a tough assignment in facing Chris Carpenter, who has been stingy with runs (1.92 ERA) at Busch. But the Redbirds have been slumping as a team, dropping five of their last six including a three-game sweep at Pittsburgh over the weekend. And Cincinnati comes in with some momentum after taking two of three from the Phillies. With Aaron Harang on the mound (2-0 vs. Cards this season), the Reds look like a strong underdog play according to Dunkel, which has Cincinnati favored straight up by 1. Hot Streaks

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) - Bedard continues to get better on the hill each time he starts. His record over his last three may not look great (0-2), but the Orioles haven`t given him anything to work with. Over that span he registered a 3.72 ERA and averaged over five strikeouts per game. He`ll be in tough tonight against the New York Yankees and Mike Mussina as a +157 road underdog.

Orlando Hernandez (New York Mets) - After a slow start to the season, Hernandez has come around to be a solid starter once again for the Mets. Over his last three games he`s really turned it on, going 2-0 while averaging six strikeouts per game. He`s also been keeping his walks to a minimum, giving up just over one per game during that stretch. He`s a -114 favorite tonight against Randy Wolf and the Phillies.

Roger Clemens (Houston Astros) - The Rocket seems to have found his smoke again at just the right time for the Houston Astros. Sitting just four games out of the National League wild card, Clemens has won his last two starts and put up five strikeouts in each. He`s averaged just under seven innings of work in his last five games and is a -245 favorite tonight against the Chicago Cubs.

Javier Vazquez (Chicago White Sox) - Vazquez has been stellar at home this season posting a 7-2 record. He`s been working hard to lower his season ERA and over his last three games, he`s posted a very respectable 3.93. Oddsmakers have made him a heavy -269 favorite tonight to knock off the lowly Kansas City Royals.

              Cold Streaks

Runelvys Hernandez (Kansas City Royals) - It`s been another dismal year on the mound for Hernandez and the Royals. He`s gone 0-4 on the road this season with a staggering 10.62 ERA, which isn`t much worse than his season ERA of 8.15.

Chris Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals) - Carpenter seems to have fallen victim to the Cardinals` slump and hasn`t put up a win since July 25. He`s been rocked in his last three games against the Reds, Brewers and Cubs, going 0-2 with a 7.94 ERA. Over that stretch, he gave up five homers while striking out just over three batters. His Cardinals are a -166 favorite tonight against division rival Cincinnati.

Matt Morris (San Francisco Giants) - The Giants will need Morris to pick up his game substantially to help them make a serious playoff push. Tonight he takes on Chris Young and the San Diego Padres as a +120 underdog. He`s been unreliable in night games going 6-9 with a 5.02 ERA.

              Other notables

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - 6-1 on the road this season, 14-3 overall.

Jeremy Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) - 10-1 in night games, 3.76 season ERA.

Curt Schilling (Boston Red Sox) - 8-1 at home; has given up just five walks at Fenway.

Mike Mussina (New York Yankees) - 7-2 in night games this season with a 3.68 ERA.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - 7-0 at home with a 2.72 ERA.

Detroit at Boston - Tigers +126 (first-half line)

The Detroit Tigers snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 7-4 victory over Boston last night. The secret, they’ve discovered, is not to let the opposing pitcher get too comfortable.

"With a pitcher like (Josh) Beckett," manager Jim Leyland told reporters, "a lot of times, if you can get him before he settles in, you have a chance. Otherwise, it can be a long night."

The Tigers tagged Beckett for five runs in six innings, easily grabbing the first-half payout with a 5-1 lead at the end of the fifth. Tonight they face Curt Schilling, another hurler who can be tough if given a chance to settle in. However, the Boston righty has been looking vulnerable lately.

Schilling has a 6.05 ERA in his last three outings and didn’t give his team a lead after five in any of those starts.

Atlanta at Washington: Braves + 101

The Washington Nationals committed the fewest errors in the franchise’s history with 92 last season.

Three miscues in Sunday’s loss to the New York Mets saw them surpass that total by one and by the end of Monday’s 10-4 shellacking at the hands of the Braves, they were tied with the Florida Marlins as the worst fielding club (.978 percent) in the majors.

That could be an issue against an Atlanta team that’s beaten them in five of nine meetings this season, but the Nats are in no hurry to correct it.

"Well, we`ve got different people here, and those things happen," manager Frank Robinson told the Washington Times. "A lot of it is that we have a lot of new people coming in and out of the lineup. Things like that."

"There`s nothing you can do about (the errors). No one tries to make them," third baseman Ryan Zimmerman added. "You don`t really think about it. You make errors, and there`s nothing you can do about them once you make them. You just kind of move along and forget about them."

                Milwaukee at Pittsburgh: Pirates (-1 ½) +186

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ value appears to be peaking.

Heading into today’s matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers, they’ve won four in a row including a three-game sweep of the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals.

"You can`t say enough about what these guys are doing now," manager Jim Tracy told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Considering how hot they are, another multi-run victory over the Brew Crew shouldn’t be asking too much. The Bucs have won by two or more in six of their last eight meetings with Milwaukee.

”Keep piling it on and bury a team,” shortstop Jack Wilson said after the Pirates beat the Brewers 12-1 May 30. “That`s what you`ve got to do.”

Doug Davis: steady in August and faces a less-potent Pirate lineup tonight

                  Milwaukee at Pittsburgh: Under 9

Pittsburgh fans have watched 10 games go under the total at PNC Park, during which the teams have averaged only 5.5 runs combined.

That’s well below the 9.5 run-per-game average the park has seen for the entire year. The reduced offense is a result of cold Pittsburgh bats and hot Pirates arms.

The Bucs have nice offensive numbers against left-handed pitching, but they’re missing key contributors to those lofty totals when they face southpaw Doug Davis and the Brewers tonight.

Craig Wilson and Sean Casey, both hitting over .300 against lefties, were dealt at the trade deadline and Jason Bay broke his ironman streak Monday night with a strained hamstring and is likely out for the entire series. That means Freddy Sanchez and his unreal .461 average against left-handers won’t have a lot of protection.

Southpaw Tom Gorzelanny takes the hill for the black & gold, looking to maintain the team’s success at home. They’ve gone 8-2 over the recent low-scoring spell at PNC, largely because the team is allowing only 1.8 runs per game over that span.

Los Angeles Angels at Texas: Over 10

Ervin Santana has recovered from the line drive-induced knee injury he suffered in his last outing and will start for the Angels in Arlington tonight against the hottest bats in MLB.

“He probably had ice on it all but one hour each day,” manager Mike Scioscia told The Long Beach Press-Telegram. “Once the swelling is under control then the stiffness won`t be as much. He`ll be OK.”

Santana should be more concerned with the Rangers’ lineup than his knee. He held Texas to five hits over eight innings on August 5, but the Rangers have since exploded, scoring 61 runs over their last seven games and 37 in their recent four-game set against Seattle.

Three of Vicente Padilla’s last four home starts have played over the total, including his most recent home start on July 28 in which he allowed seven earned runs in only 3 2/3 innings against the lowly Royals.

Arizona at Colorado: Under 9 ½

We apologize for sounding like a broken record, but Monday night’s series opener in Coors Field played under the total of 9 ½ and Jason Jennings shows no signs of messing with the under trend in the thin mountain air.

Jennings’ record is only 6-8 through 19 starts since a slow April, but he’s averaging more than seven innings a start over that span and has a 2.74 ERA. The Rockies have played under the total in seven of his 11 home starts this season and he’s posted a ridiculous 0.87 ERA over his last four starts at Coors.

The Diamondbacks counter with Miguel Batista, who lasted only four innings in his last start in Denver, a 4-3 Colorado win that played comfortably under the 10-run total as the D-backs bullpen pitched five shutout innings.

The 57 games at Coors this season have resulted in 38 contests playing under the total
