    Six-Pack for Monday
-- ESPN is hoping Tony Kornheiser is next Howard Cosell; to me, it is stupid to hire someone to comment on games when he admits he hasn't seen the end of a Monday night football game in 30 years. Why not just hire my ex-wife? She'd be willing to work for lot less than Kornheiser.......
-- My friend in Phil on Long Island sent a note to remind me that Russell Erxleben of the Saints was kicker/punter for the Saints in early 80's; maybe the greatest college kicker ever, of course he was awful with the seemingly-cursed Saints.
-- Only three men in baseball history have hit 30+ homers and less than ten doubles in same year; Frank Thomas is on pace to join McGwire ('00), Kingman ('82), Zernial ('55).
-- Jamie Gold, guy who won World Series of Poker is a 1991 graduate of UAlbany, Hope he changes his mailing address and phone number; they'll be stalking him with requests for alumni contributions.
-- Why don't pitchers just throw from stretch all the time? Wouldn't this be easier? Some relievers do, but not many.
-- Washington Nationals have cool new gimmick, spinoff of the Sausage Races in Milwaukee; they have a Presidential Race, with four presidents from Mt Rushmore, in costumes similar to the sausages. So far, in the month they've been doing the Presidential Race, Teddy Roosevelt is winless.

      Monday's: Nobody asked me, but...............
      13) TV viewing choices, late Sunday night:
-- Little League regional final, Oregon vs Alaska
-- WNBA game, Paul Westhead's Phoenix team
-- Replay of Dolphins-Jaguars NFL exhibition game
      -- Poker Superstars tournament
Needless to say, the WNBA game was the #4 choice.

      12) Speaking of Little League, there is team from Oregon and a team from Alaska playing in San Bernadino, CA; how much is that costing those people? Lot of emotional stress on the kids, lot of financial stress on the parents.

      11) Clinton Portis makes a tackle on an INT during preseason game, injures his left shoulder. It is stupid to have preseason games for four weeks; how about just two? Teams would be leaving some money on the table, but they'd find a way to make it up, I'm guessing.

      10) I know Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls, but two of three were in strike-altered seasons ('82,'87) where he had the ace personnel man Bobby Beathard helping out. The NFC East is jampacked with subplots and promises to be fascinating.

      9) Al Saunders is Redskins' new offensive coordinator; their playbook is 700 pages. Saunders claims if he uses a play in a game, he won't use it again for at least four weeks. What if it worked really well; shouldn't he use it again?

      8) Vince Young got rough introduction to NFL, spraining his ankle after he was just 4-11 passing. One thing he will learn- in the pro game, it is safer to be a pocket passer first.

      7) Marvin Lewis wants Carson Palmer to play little next week, then three quarters in third preseason game. Palmer doesn't want to play next week, doesn't think he's ready to go into a game. This will also be interesting subplot to follow.

      6) Eastern Michigan's football team was just 4-7 last year, but they did great job turning around their turnover margin-- they were +10 last year, after being combined -44 previous four yrs The Eagles could be primed for a turnaround season in 2006.

      5) Indians' first eleven hitters reached base Sunday, as Tribe scored 11 runs, on their way to 13-0 win. You get the Royals, Pirates, Devil Rays or Orioles away from home-- really awful. .

      4) Devil Rays scored 11 runs on recent 0-6 road trip-- luckily for them, their franchise is run by Ivy League types who have this all figured out. Tampa is now 1-20 the last 21 times they scored less than six runs, which is pretty much every night, since they traded leadoff hitter Lugo for minor leaguers.

      3) Cardinals are awful, but still lead NL Central; Pirates swept them this weekend at PNC. Dodgers have suddenly emerged as second-best team in NL, thanks to all the kids they have. Russell Martin is the real deal behind the plate.

      2) Mets are sleepwalking through season; they play so many different guys-- Ricky Ledee and Michael Tucker suddenly are in the outfield mix-- it'll be interesting to see if their play is going to suffer in playoffs, when they're under the gun. They haven't played pressurized game in three months.

      1) Beaverton, Oregon, home of Nike, has team in Little League World Series, first Oregon team to make it since '58; Beavers of Oregon State won college title, so suddenly, rainy Oregon is a baseball hotbed. Who knew?

                Detroit at Boston
The Tigers may be feeling a little uncertain tonight as they come to Fenway Park after being swept by the White Sox over the weekend. Boston is coming off a three-game sweep of the Orioles, but that came after losing five straight to lower-rated Tampa Bay and Kansas City. And Boston starter Josh Beckett has not been as consistent at his 13-6 record might indicate, while Tigers' starter Nate Robertson has pitched at least six inning in six straight road starts (2-3 record over that span). Boston gets a slight advantage at home, but not enough to cover the run line according to Dunkel, which has the Red Sox favored by just 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Roy Oswalt (Houston Astros) – Oswalt has returned to his old form lately after an inconsistent first half. He hasn’t lost since July 18 while posting a respectable 3.57 ERA over that stretch. In his last three starts he is 2-0 and has allowed a combined five runs over 12 innings. The Astros are –133 favorites against the Chicago Cubs tonight.

Mark Redman (Kansas City Royals) – When you pitch for the Royals you can only stay hot for so long and Redman knows that all too well. After K.C. won seven straight games with Redman on the hill, he has since gone 1-2 with a lofty 6.55 ERA in his last six starts. He hasn’t lasted past the fifth in any of his last three outings. The Royals are +224 underdogs against the White Sox tonight.

Florida at Los Angeles Dodgers: Dodgers (-1 ½) +160

The Dodgers traveled to Miami just over a week ago and the Marlins were more than gracious hosts. Los Angeles swept the three-game series by a combined score of 23-7.

The Dodgers have since returned home as the class of the previously classless NL West, netting backers an amazing 15.48 units over their last 16 games.

Derek Lowe beat Florida on August 4 then started in L.A.’s only August loss. He looked strong in both starts, however, and just ended up on the wrong end of a Jeff Francis gem.

The Marlins have lost the last two road starts by Dontrelle Willis by wide margins, with the lefty ace allowing 21 baserunners in only 7 2/3 combined innings.

San Francisco at San Diego: Padres -130

After last night’s extra-inning loss to the Dodgers, San Francisco manager Felipe Alou reflected on his team’s July 23 loss to the Padres. That was also the night the Giants coughed up their brief lead on the NL West.

“That was a momentum killer,” Alou told The San Francisco Chronicle. “That was the beginning of the killer losing streak. Things have never been the same… Everything was happening, saves, coming from behind, walk-offs. After that, everything died.”

Brad Hennessey pitched well in his last start for the G-men. Unfortunately that was back on July 1, a different era as far as today’s Giants are concerned.

Clay Hensley takes the hill for the hometown Padres, hoping to feed off Sunday’s Woody Williams win against the Astros.

“It`s weird with this team,” Williams told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “It`s like they see a couple of guys succeed and go, `Hey, I can do this, too.` It starts clicking.”

Kansas City at Chicago White Sox: White Sox (-1 ½) –115

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has regained confidence in his starters, finally realizing he just needs innings from them, not masterpieces.

“When our starters go six-plus innings, we have a good chance,” Guillen told The Chicago Sun-Times. “We have three guys - Matt Thornton, Mike MacDougal and Bobby Jenks - who could close any time, any place.”

The White Sox are 9-2 in Jon Garland’s last 11 starts and while he’s been hit hard in a few of those wins, he’s durable enough to meet Guillen’s demand for innings.

The Royals padded backers’ wallets to the tune of 5.40 units over three games with their recent home sweep of the Red Sox, but it’s been back to their losing ways since they left Missouri. Their four-game sweep at the hands of the Indians dropped the Royals’ road record to an AL-worst 15-44.

                      TOTALS TO WATCH

Mets at Phillies: under 9 (-125)

Starters Pedro Martinez and Cole Hamels both go into this game on hot streaks.

Martinez has a 3.26 ERA and has limited opposing hitters to a .179 batting average in three starts since returning from a month-long stay on the DL on July 28.

And his best game of the three was his most recent start, when he allowed two runs and three hits in 7 1/3 innings against the Padres on Aug. 9.

Hamels’ 4.97 season ERA won’t give anyone goose bumps, but the 22-year-old southpaw was impressive in his last start on Aug. 8. That night the Phillies’ rookie limited Atlanta to one run in six innings, although he did take the loss thanks to his teammates’ cold bats.

In his last three starts, Hamels has a sparkling ERA of 2.21.

                      Mariners at Athletics: Over 8 ½ (-110)

If there’s one team Jarrod Washburn doesn’t want to see coming, it’s the A’s.

In two starts versus Oakland this season, Washburn has an ERA of 7.50. Going back to the 2004 season, the Mariners’ left-hander has a 5.17 ERA in his last six starts against Oakland.

Washburn has enough trouble pitching on the road this year without having to face the A’s. He’s won just twice in 11 road starts and has a 4.88 ERA pitching away from Seattle.

Barry Zito also has issues to work through heading into this game. In his last three starts he has a 5.30 ERA, and he’s just 4-6 with a 4.40 ERA pitching at home in ’06.

                      Angels at Yankees: Over 9 ½ (-115)

Randy Johnson just isn’t what he used to be.

Sure, there are times he lights up the radar gun and gives bettors a brief glimpse of what he used to be. But the truth remains he’s got a 5.03 ERA on the season, and an ugly 7.04 ERA in his last three outings.

Luckily for Johnson, his Yankee teammates have been pounding the ball in August. So far this month, the Yankees have hit 22 home runs, most in the American League.

The Bronx Bombers have also hit 111 home runs off right-handed pitchers in ’06, fourth best in the AL. That’s bad news for Angels’ starter John Lackey, who sports a 7.16 ERA in his last three outings.
