        Six-Pack for Sunday

-- Hope someone is writing a book about Florida Marlins- they've had player scuffles in dugouts, the owner fired the manager last week, then changed his mind. All this, but the team is contending, despite a payroll of only $14 million.

-- You have to love NBA.tv; 1am tipoffs from South Korea, as USA team drills Lithuania; they're up 92-62 in the fourth as I type this. Team USA plays with smiles on their faces, which is the right way to play basketball. Game wound up a misleading 104-88; wasn't that close until the last minute.

-- Falcons' Michael Koenen has chance to with punting and kicking jobs, which would be highly unusual; I think last guy to punt, kick and kickoff might have been Don Cockroft with the Browns in the 70's, but not 100% on that one. Lee Johnson might also have done it for a short while.

-- The sculptor of the busts at the Pro Football Hall of Fame played football at BYU with Steve Young.

-- Kicker named Sandro DeAngelis drilled 52,53 yard FGs in last 90 seconds of game, as Calgary Stampeders scored the last 13 points of game to hand Montreal their first loss of '06 CFLseason, 27-24, Saturday night at McMahon Stadium.

-- Saints' backup QB Adrian McPherson was injured when the golf cart driving the Titans' mascot around the field at halftime clipped MacPherson. He walked into locker room, but didn't return to the game. Those darned mascots.

            Perusing thru NFL media guide

            13) Marty Schottenheimer has 186-124-1 regular season mark as NFL coach, but only 5-12 in playoff games. Dennis Green has a similar record (108-83 regular season, 4-8 playoffs).

            12) Only 34 of 62 underclassmen (54.8%) who declared for the '06 NFL Draft got selected.

            11) USC had 11 players drafted last spring, two more than any other school. 49 DBs were taken, most of any position.

            10) Baltimore Ravens didn't score 20+ points in game last year until Week 12, a 42-29 loss to Cincinnati in late November.

            9) Not to say that Gary Kubiak and Mike Shanahan are close from their days in Denver, but the WR coach on Kubiak's first staff with Houston Texans is Kyle Shanahan, Mike's son.

            8) Jacksonville outscored their opponents 113-36 in the third quarter last season. Solid halftime adjustments? I think so.

            7) Dolphins have two Thursday games, which actually gives them three times this season where they have 10+ days to get ready for their next game, and only one time when they have a short week (Thanksgiving week).

            6) Miami won their last six games last year, so everyone is on their bandwagon, but four of their last five wins in '05 were by four or less points. They're no sure thing for '06 playoffs.

            5) Pete Carroll got ripped for his tenure as NFL head coach, but you look it up; his career NFL record is 34-33. Not terrible.

            4) Art Shell had 56-41 record in his first tenure as coach of the Raiders; take out Jon Gruden's 40-28 mark in Oakland, and the other four coaches since Shell combined to go 45-70- they're a dismal 13-35 the last three seasons.

            3) Speaking of Raiders, Hall of Famer Jackie Slater is offensive line coach in Oakland now.

            2) Rams' head coach Scott Linehan and RB Steven Jackson both played their college ball for Dennis Erickson. Linehan played QB at Idaho; Jackson ran the ball at Oregon State.

            1) You can win this bar bet easily: Mike Shanahan and Sean Payton both played quarterback at Eastern Illinois, and are now both head coaches in NFL. What are the odds?

Surprisingly, baseball`s hottest team hails from the worst division (AP)

Tampa Bay at Oakland: A’s -160

The west is best when fading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Or at least that’s been the case during T-Bay’s recent road trip.

Tampa Bay is winless through five games of its six-game, cross-country trek for a total loss of five units.

To no one’s surprise, the league’s 29th ranked offense is a major reason why as the Devil Rays, who have scored a total of 509 runs all year, are averaging just two runs per game during their current slide.

San Diego at Houston: Astros -129

Two straight uninspiring starts didn’t help Brandon Backe win any fans in his return from the DL late last month. The back-to-back one-run performances that followed have.

Backe spent most of the first half on the 60-day DL with a sore elbow, which has limited his power, but not the location of his pitches. It took Backe two losses to realize this. But once he did, the 29-year-old has been money. Backe has gone at least seven innings with two straight paydays and hasn’t allowed more than one earned run.

                      Seattle at Texas: Rangers -121

Nothing the Seattle Mariners have thrown Texas’ way has been enough to stop the Rangers. Everything has turned into runs.

The mighty Rangers offense, still flourishing with the addition of Carlos Lee sandwiched between Michael Young and Mark Teixeira, has outscored Seattle 27-13 in three straight paydays as a favorite.

Seattle simply doesn’t have an answer for their American League West rivals. The Mariners have dropped five of seven meetings with the Rangers this season.

San Francisco at Los Angeles Dodgers: Dodgers +101

Three straight one-run wins might be a sign of a possible cooling off by the Dodgers. But really, how much can a team that has won 14 of 15 have left in the tank?

Not much according to oddsmakers. Apparently, Jason Schmidt means more to this game than L.A.’s moneymaking run. While Schmidt has been impressive, his stamina remains an issue for San Francisco, which will be without reliever Brian Wilson (rest).

One less arm in the bullpen might not be good for Schmidt. He hasn’t pitched past the seventh inning since the end of June.

Chicago Cubs at Colorado: Under 10

Colorado’s suddenly hot bats resulted in two straight wins against the Cubbies playing over the total, but keep in mind that the Rockies played under in eight of 10 games in their last homestand.

Coors Field remains the top under play in MLB, either because of the baseballs stored in the infamous humidor, the long infield grass, improved pitching by the Rockies, or because global warming is rendering the thin mountain air as ***** as pancake batter.

In any case, more than twice as many games at Coors play under so double-digit totals merit consideration no matter who takes the hill.

In this case it’s inconsistent rookie Carlos Marmol for the Cubs taking on Byung-Hyun Kim for the Rockies. Kim is one of the Coors’ biggest beneficiaries, with his 2.75 home ERA resulting in seven of his nine home starts playing under the total.

Seattle at Texas: Under 9 ½

Felix Hernandez’s extra rest before and after the All-Star break has paid dividends, especially for bettors playing the under when the King takes the mound.

The 20-year old right-hander has a 2.20 ERA over his five post-break starts. Combine that stellar pitching with Seattle’s sub-par offense and you get five consecutive Hernandez starts playing under.

While Texas has teed off against Seattle pitching in the first three games of the series, Seattle will finally have their relief trio of Mark Lowe, Rafael Soriano and J.J. Putz back at full health tonight.

Kevin Millwood has struggled in Arlington, but should be aided by home plate umpire John Hirschbeck’s generous strike zone. Games have played under the total in 15 of the 21 games Hirschbeck has called, including 11 of 14 when the total is 9 ½ or lower.

Toronto at Minnesota: Under 9 ½

Just 12 runs in their last six games and only a single run against the Toronto Blue Jays in three games at the Metrodome. What’s up with the Twins’ offense?

"We`re facing good pitching, but I`ve seen better pitching, and we just can`t get it done,`` Torii Hunter told The St. Paul Pioneer Press. "The last couple days, we [stink] … The next couple days, we rock.``

Easier said than done. The Jays are on the verge of a four-game sweep against MLB’s top home team, something that couldn’t have been foreseen with ace Roy Halladay not slated to start any of the four.

The Jays’ starters have kept the ball down and the relievers have been perfect. If Shaun Marcum can duplicate his last effort against Baltimore, it could also be a four-game sweep for bettors playing the under.

Florida at Arizona: Over 9 ½

Both offenses are pounding out hits these days and this afternoon game shows signs of those hits finally being translated into runs.

The Marlins cranked 17 hits off Livan Hernandez and Brandon Webb in the pitchers’ combined 13 innings, which doesn’t bode well for Enrique Gonzalez, this afternoon’s starter for the D-backs.

The Marlins can also face a worn-out bullpen if they can tag Arizona’s rookie starter early, which other teams have been able to do with some regularity over the summer.

Florida counters with Ricky Nolasco, a 10-game winner as a rookie but a young pitcher who’s been involved in a lot of slugfests on the road. Nine of his 13 road starts have played over the total.

                          Hot Streaks

Luke Hudson (Kansas City Royals) - The Royals will be looking for Hudson to break them out of a three-game losing streak when he takes the mound tonight. Hudson is 3-0 with a 3.87 ERA over his last three outings. He`s done it against tough opponents as well, beating the Red Sox, White Sox and Rangers. Kansas City takes on the Indians tonight as a +180 underdog.

Brandon Backe (Houston Astros) - It took a few outings but Backe has settled in nicely since coming off the DL. After losing his first two starts since returning to the rotation, he has pitced at least seven innings in his last two starts while allowing just two earned runs and 10 hits. The Astros played under in both of those games. Houston is a -129 favorite tonight against the San Diego Padres with the total set at 9 ½.

Greg Maddux (Los Angeles Dodgers) - A rejuvenated Maddux is loving life in Los Angeles. He is undefeated in his last four starts and has given up just two earned runs and seven hits in two starts as a Dodger. The Dodgers have won 14 of their last 15 games and will go for a sweep of the Giants tonight. L.A. is listed as a +101 underdog for the matchup with the total set at 8 ½. The under is 6-1 in Maddux`s last seven outings.

                          Cold Streaks

Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers) - Millwood hasn`t gotten a victory since July 19th and his ERA has ballooned to an unimpressive 4.74. He is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in his last four starts and has been terrible at home this season, going 3-6 with a 6.28 ERA. The Rangers host the Seattle Mariners tonight with Texas listed as a -121 favorite for the matchup.

Jason Marquis (St. Louis Cardinals) - Despite recording 12 wins on the year, Marquis has been downright awful for most of the season. He has the fourth worst ERA among starters in the majors and has allowed batters to hit at a .355 clip against him. He is 0-3 with a whopping 8.03 ERA in his last three starts. The Cards are -120 favorites against Paul Maholm and the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight. The total is set at 9 ½.

Tony Armas (Washington Nationals) - Armas is 0-3 with a 9.55 ERA in his last three trips to the hill. He pitched a total of just 12 2/3 innings during that stretch, making it past the third inning only once. Armas has just one victory in his last eight starts, dating back to June 4th. The Nationals host the NL East leading New York Mets tonight with oddsmakers setting the Nats as +122 underdogs.

                          Other Notables:

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) - Hasn`t lost since July 3rd, going 5-0 in six starts.

Tomo Ohka (Milwaukee Brewers) - Has allowed 12 earned runs in his last two starts.
