Saturday's : Looking at ACC football.........
The ACC is now a football league to rival anyone in country, with Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Boston College. As they prepare to tee it up again this season, let's take a short look at each of the teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference............

-- No other team in country has won a bowl game in each of last six seasons, but Boston College has; this year, BC has to get by this season with only eight seniors on whole squad -- not an easy thing. They have six starters back on both sides of ball, and will rely on spunky QB Ryan (5-0 as starter last year) to keep Eagles amongst nation's quietest elite teams.

-- Clemson returns 15 starters from an 8-4 team, but breaks in new QB in Proctor, a fifth-year senior who rallied team in win over Texas A&M last year. Tiger fans have expectations that are thru the roof for Tommy Bowden, so his 52-33 record in seven years isn't exactly revered, even though they played tough schedules and are almost laways better at end of year than at the start. Strong running game will help Proctor in '06.

-- Good news for Duke is that hoop practice starts October 15 and Spurrier always give them vote in preseason top 25, the only time they'll ever get one. Spurrier has been gone 16 yrs, and Duke has won more than four games in just one of those 16 seasons. Coach Roof has recruited well, and Duke has its share of talented guys, but they're still young, so expecting breakthrough this year is being a year ahead of yourself.

-- If Duke went 8-5, they'd throw Coach Roof a parade; when Florida State goes 8-5 in Bowden's 30th year in Tallahassee, it ain't good news. Only seven seniors on this year's team, so it is a talented, but very young team for Seminoles- they were last in ACC running ball last year, so offensive line has to be opening more holes and protecting Weatherford better. he is a pretty good QB; expect FSU to bounce back in '06.

-- Georgia Tech has a senior QB (Reggie Ball) always good to have, four starters back on offensive line; Jackets open up vs Notre Dame at home Sept 2, so they better hit ground running just like they did last year, when they upset Auburn early in season. Tech is one of only seven schools in country to play in bowls the last nine years, but Gailey's 28-22 record in four years at Tech doesn't have the alumni excited. Go figure.

-- Maryland won five games in each of last two years, after a three-year stretch where they won 31 times; Terps changed both coordinators after last season, plus Penn State asserted itself in recruiting battles on Terps' home turf, so things aren't looking up for the Turtle. Maryland does have seven starters back on both sides of ball, and senior QB, so mistakes should decrease, and wins should increase. Hopefully.

-- Larry Coker is 53-9 in five years at Miami, so his 9-3 mark last year was disappointment; such is college football. Miami lost their bowl game 40-3 last year; 'canes aren't supposed to lose to anyone 40-3. As result, six new coaches were brought in by Coker-- funny thing is, one of the assistants is former head coach at Army, Todd Berry, who couldn't win anything at Army, but suddenly finds himself in a hotbed of winning, so much so that a 9-3 season gets six coaches fired. Wright should be much better in his second year as starting QB.

-- North Carolina brought in offensive coordinator from that giant killer Fresno State, so Tar Heels will be more aggressive with ball, especially with former Nebraska QB Dailey under center. UNC has seven starters back on defense, as they try for first winning season since '01. Heels were 106th in NCAA in running ball last year, so expect them to try and run ball right at opponents, to set up pass, protect their defense.

-- Chuck Amato is 46-28 at NC State, one of best records in school history, but natives are restless, since Amato painted pictures of national titles in Raleigh while he was stumping for money for great facility upgrades Wolfpack got the last few years. The offense needs to carry more of its share of the load in '06, since the defense has to replace three high draft picks to the NFL. Look for State to try and run ball a lot.

-- Virginia is just 21-19 in ACC games under Al Groh, so even though the program has improved, playing in bowls the last four years, there is still work to do. Not only did Groh's top 3 assistants all leave to become head coaches, they took other coaches with them as assistants, and there was turnover in the player ranks, too, so this figures to be a rebuilding year in Charlottesville. Notre Dame transfer Olsen is the new QB.

-- Virginia Tech had a discipline problem last year; they had 17 penalties in the ACC title game, then five personal fouls in the bowl game, including CB Williams getting tossed early, and QB Vick getting flag for stomping an opponent. Hokies must replace three all-ACC offensive linemen, so there will be even more pressure on defense that allowed just 12.9 ppg last season. With four new coaches, a new QB, three new starters on the offensive line, Hokies might have to take a step back.

-- Wake Forest ranked higher than Miami in total offense last year, but still finished 4-7; now, with 19 starters back, Wake is team whose time has come. They expect to pass little more, as highly-recruited Mauk is now junior QB- they ran more out of shotgun in spring game, so team that led ACC in rushing four of last five years might be more balanced in '06. When Grobe has had experienced players at Wake, he has won, and this is his most experienced team in last four years.
