    CFL

Saskatchewan (3-4) @ Edmonton (2-5)-- Roughriders 3-0 after a loss this year (LWLWLWL); they had scored 29.6 ppg in first five games, but Calgary held them to 19,7 in last two games, as Stamps won two of three in season series. Eskimos lost three in row since their bye; they're 2-0 if they score 18+ points, 0-5 if they score less- they scored 13,17 in losing last two games. Big game for both sides having disappointing seasons.

Torotno (2-5) @ Hamilton (2-6)-- Argos won season opener vs TiCats 27-17, but lost five of six games since, allowing 28.4 ppg in last five games. Hamilton split four games since they changed coaches, upsetting Winnipeg last week, but they're just 1-2 at home-- this is first time this season TiCats are favored. Argos are 1-3 on road, winning only at Regina; their road losses are by 7,7,24 points- they scored total of 15 points in last two games.

Montreal (7-0) @ Calgary (4-4)-- Closest calls Alouettes had in 7-0 start were second, third games vs Hamilton- they beat them by 18,6,3 points- they crushed rival Argos last week, could be in for letdown vs Stampeder club that snapped three-game skid in win vs Saskatchewan last week, and is 3-1 at home. Stamps are 4-0 if they score 23+, 0-4 if they don't. Als allowed 23+ points in only one of their seven games.

      Six-Pack for Friday
-- Colts opened their first preseason game with onside kick that worked. Save that one for when it counts, coach.
-- Would you pay $24.95 to watch the final table of the World Series of Poker live? Me either, but you could if you wanted to. ESPN had it on Pay per View.
-- Here's a novel idea; how about putting it on ESPNU live for a year or two, getting people hooked, then charging them for it? There is no way of telling how long the final table will last, which is probably why it stays off regular TV.
-- ESPN is the same company that now charges you to read college hoop articles by Fran Fraschilla or Jay Bilas, even at this time of year; they call it being "an insider", but how about just having a really informative website? Would this be too much to ask? Do they always have to try and suck our last pennies out of us?
-- Three ballplayers who should hug their agent every time they see him: Eric Milton ($9,833,333), Javy Lopez ($9M)) and Carl Pavano ($8M). Pavano shouldn't give too big a hug; he might hurt his back.
-- It bugs me that Joe Buck complains about preseason tilts being long; how much money does this guy make? Lot of guys would love to have your job. Pretend you care.

Friday's Offseason look at the Texans
        13) I was in Houston the week before the NFL Draft, and the people's choice wasn't Mario Williams, and it wasn't Reggie Bush-- it was Vince Young. Passing on Young puts pressure on David Carr to produce-- like, now.

        12) Gary Kubiak replaces Dom Capers as head coach; Capers is an excellent defensive guy, but as head coach, he was just so..........uninspiring. Kubiak has been all over Carr, criticizing him for his mistakes, whereas he had been coddled in past. I really think Houston could make a big leap this year.

        11) Now Kubiak has an offensive background, but he takes a defensive player in controversial first round pick, which goes to show you he understands that it takes balance to win. Not everyone in the NFL understands that.

        10) Last year, Texans went 2-14; they didn't win a game until Oct. 30. They scored three TDs in their first three games, on 26 total drives. Carr was sacked 27 times-- in first four games. He is becoming this generation's version of Archie Manning, which is why Kubiak was brought in, to salvage his career.

        9) Texans allowed TDs on 27.8% of opponents' drives last yr and forced 3-and-outs on only 25.9%, only NFL team to have that regretful distinction.

        8) We track defensive records on three kinds of drives: ones that start 80+ yards from goal line, ones that start in your end of field, and ones that end up in red zone. Last year, Houston was 31st, 31st and 30th in league in those areas. Not good.

        7) They had 16 takeaways, very low number; their 167 forced incompletions was 31st in league, only one more than Jags. Obviously, they need defense, which is why Williams was so important. Good defense takes presssure off rest of the team.

        6) Kubiak has easy act to follow on offense; Texans were last in NFL, gaining just 14.6 yds/drive on their first drive of game and were outscored 40-10 on first drive of game. Texans were fourth in league in yards per drive on first drive of the third quarter, but they had to be more aggressive, since they were always behind. The trick is to get ahead more.

        5) Dominick Davis is terrific RB, but he is hurt, so who will be the runner early in season? The absence of Bush will be quite glaring if they don't come up with an adequate replacement.

        4) Dan Reeves was brought in as a consultant last year; this guy is walking encyclopedia of NFL, and he has rarely been around losing teams. At the least, Houston should be a club that is more competitive, more spunky than last year's team. It would be almost impossible not to be.

        3) Texans drafted Williams, then a LB from Alabama, but after that, they took two offensive guys, including two linemen, so it looks as if Carr is going to get some help.

        2) The schedule maker didn't do them any favors, opening vs Eagles, Colts, Redskins; three of their last four games are at home, but they do have cold weather games at Foxboro and against Jets. In weeks 8-10, they have three road tilts in row.

        1) This year is all about Carr, and about establishing that the people of Houston can get behind this team; they weren't a happy group of fans in April. Kubiak has waited a while for this opportunity. I think the Texans have a lot of upside.

                    Hot streaks:

Livan Hernandez (Arizona Diamondbacks) - While this hasn`t been a stellar season for the 1997 World Series MVP, Hernandez is hot. The Cuban defector is undefeated in three starts with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. Arizona takes on the Florida Marlins tonight as -111 home favorites.

Dan Haren (Oakland Athletics) - Haren is in high gear and leading the A`s on their hopeful highway to the postseason. The right-hander is 3-0 in his last three decisions with a miniscule 1.57 ERA for Oakland. The A`s are -145 favorites tonight at home against Scott Kazmir and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

                    Cold streaks:

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - So much for the undefeated streak and talks of a Cy Young award for Contreras in `06. As he goes, so do the White Sox, who host the Detroit Tigers tonight at U.S. Cellular Field as slight -113 favorites. Contreras is 1-2 over his last three outings with a 5.66 ERA.

Tom Glavine (New York Mets) - Mets backers can thank New York`s high-powered offense for the Mets` favored status tonight. Glavine sports a 7.27 ERA since July 21 with a 1.67 WHIP. The Mets are listed as -144 favorites tonight on the road in Washington.

Josh Johnson (Florida Marlins) - Bettors should not be fooled by the rookie`s 2.85 ERA on the season. Johnson has cooled off in his last three appearances posting a 5.06 ERA in 16 innings pitched. The Marlins are +103 underdogs tonight at Chase Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

                    Other notables:

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - The young fireballer is 7-2 away from home on the season with a 2.30 ERA.

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - The Braves` ace is 8-4 at night this season with a 3.20 ERA.

                          Detroit at Chicago White Sox
A big series opens tonight as the Tigers visit the White Sox with the added bonus of a marquee matchup between Justin Verlander and Jose Contreras.
