    Six-Pack for Thursday

-- Dodgers' win streak came to an end, as Kent, Ethier failed to deliver with bags full in 1-1 game in bottom of 8th; then Colorado scored twice in ninth for the 3-1 win.

-- Red Sox lost fourth game in row, all to Tampa/Royals, as Papelbon blew his second save in last three games. This is not the way to make the playoffs. Big night for Twins, as Morneau homered in 8th for 4-3 win in Detroit.

-- Mike Piazza hit two homers at Shea last night, then hit a shot to warning track in CF later in game. They made great move getting rid of him, but Piazza can still hit.

-- When Randy Johnson no-hit the Tigers in 1990, center fielder for Detroit that night was Kenny Williams, current GM of the world champion White Sox.

-- Still trying to piece together in my mind how teams didn't grab Livan Hernandez, when he was available? He eats up a ton of innings, and had been pitching very well.

-- Just to aggravate Bronx fans, we'll point out that when it traded for Abreu/Lidle, they absorbed $16.9M in salaries, while losing four A level minor leaguers. Still not sure how the Phillies justify giving away those two players, when it is still in the pennant race!!!!

      Nobody asked me, but...........

      13) The final table at the World Series of Poker starts today-- the chip leader is Jamie Gold, with 25,650,00 chips. Poker pro Allen Cunningham is next with 17,770,000 chips. The top 12 finishers are all guaranteed $1M+ in earnings, so three guys who have been eliminated already are millionaires.

      12) First prize is $12M. Gold, by the way, once scored a 1,300 on the SAT. When he was in the fifth grade!!!

      11) Brett Favre had 11 TDs and only one INT in red zone last year, so some are saying the reason his overall numbers were bad is that Packers were behind so much, he took chances that lot of guys wouldn't have, trying to rally club. We'll see.

      10) Observers at Cowboy camp Wednesday say backup QB Tony Romo looked very sharp, while Mike Vanderjagt was awful kicking field goals. That should make Parcells happy.

      9) Through Monday night's baseball games, a total of 16,300 runs had scored in major leagues this season, an average of 9.79 per game. Every half inning averaged 16.4 pitches.

      8) ****** Gomes is a crisp 5-77 (.065) since All Star break.

      7) The Mets' blue and black hats are extremely ugly.

      6) #125 on the PGA money list is Kris Cox, with $464,633. The next closest guy is Brad Faxon, at $448,281. Making top 125 is how you guarantee your card for next year. Like hitting the lottery, as much money as there is out on Tour. So far in 2006, 53 golfers have earned $1M+. Get your kid a sand wedge.

      5) New college football rule: the clock will run more often in the kicking game and after ball is spotted after first downs, so as many as 10-15 plays per game are expected to be lost. TV wants shorter games, so TV will get shorter games.

      4) Ohio State suspended their starting TE for the season, so I guess that means they decided the backup TE was having a good camp, which made the starter expendable.

      3) When they make the Paul Loduca Story for cable someday, I can see Vin Diesel playing the Met catcher. Mrs Loduca will play herself, as she decides to pursue a movie career.

      2) In Paul Tagliabue's 17 seasons as NFL commissioner, there were 21 new stadiums built for NFL teams.

      1) NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is son of a man who was named US Senator from New York, after Robert Kennedy was assassinated in 1968. He lost when the election came up.
