    Six-Pack for Wednesday
-- Matt Doherty is new hoop coach at SMU, and he's taken to blogging One of his interesting comments is that when he recruits, he watches a player's body language, because, in his words, body language is 50% of communication.
-- That said, I watch Felix Hernandez pitch for Seattle, and 50% of what he is saying is...."I'm not having any fun here"
-- Paul Loduca was served with divorce papers on June 30; since then, he has best batting average in major leagues.
-- If I were friend of Doc Sadler, I would have asked him if he really thought Nebraska was better hoop job than UTEP The money is better ($700K/$300K) but lot of good coaches have tried and failed on the hardwood in Lincoln.
-- Three years ago, the Royals went 83-79, the Tigers went 43-119. Things can change in a hurry. They usually change for the worse quicker than they change for the better.
-- The joker who gave Duke a vote for Top 25 is none other than Steve Spurrier, who once led the Blue Devils to a bowl game. Duke won't be bowling this season, unless they go down to an alley in Durham and roll a few games.

      Wednesday's Baseball facts and figures
      13) Why isn't Davey Johnson managing a baseball team? The guy's teams did nothing but win; his '97 Orioles team is only Baltimore team to finish first since they won the world title in '83. Seems like Johnson could help someone. Right now, he is in the front office in Washington.

      12) When Orioles were good, they had dynamite pitching; their last 20-game winner was Mike Boddicker, back in 1984.

      11) I had forgotten that Arizona Diamondbacks went 100-62 in their second year of existence. That's almost too much, too soon; the fanbase gets spoiled.

      10) The Cubs haven't had a no-hitter pitched for them since '72, when they had two, but Burt Hooton and Milt Pappas. Of course, the Mets have never had a no-hitter pitched for them, even though they've had some great pitchers, some of whom went on to throw no-hitters elsewhere.

      9) Ted Williams walked 126+ times eight different seasons, walking 162 times twice; this was way before the Bonds era, when teams now simply refuse to pitch to a big star.

      8) Of the last twelve Red Sox managers who worked at least one full season, only Butch Hobson (207-232, from '92-'94) had a losing record.

      7) Angels have had eight no-hitters in franchise history; the last three (Ryan/Witt/Langston-Witt) were all won 1-0.

      6) Florida Marlins have never won a division title, but have won two World Championships; they also once gave football star Josh Booty (QB at LSU) a $1.6 signing bonus, highest-ever, at the time. What did they get out of it? 26 career at bats, and four errors in his 21 fielding chances. Yet, they've still won two world titles.

      5) Underrated managerial career? How about Jack McKeon-he is only Cincinnati skipper to win Manager of the Year, and only Florida manager to do so. He was also the first Kansas City manager to post a winning record with the Royals.

      4) When Carlos Beltran was a Royal rookie, he became the first rookie ever to score 100 runs and knock in 100 in his first season.

      3) Was Tony Pena a good manager? The Royals went 83-79 in 2003; since then, they've lost 104 and 105 games, and appear headed to 100+ losses again this year. Pena's '03 success may have inspired White Sox to hire Ozzie Guillen after the '03 season. Teams imitate successful teams.

      2) John Olerud (.315) is only player to hit .300+ during his time as a Met; Keith Hernandez hit .297 with New York.

      1) From 1996-2001, Indians had 455 consecutive sellouts, the most ever.

              Hot streaks:

Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) - The Canadian lefy carries a 1.50 ERA over his last three games in 24 innings pitched. Even more impressive is the 13 hits that Francis has allowed in that span while sporting a .202 OBP against. Colorado is +120 a underdog tonight on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) - Also a left-hander from the Great White North, Bedard is hotter than any temperature you`ll find in Canada. Bedard has a 2.79 ERA over his last three starts, having given up only one big fly in 19 1/3 innings pitched. The Orioles are +153 road underdogs today against the Toronto Blue Jays.

              Cold streaks:

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - While the Red Sox are -208 road favorites tonight against the Kansas City Royals, it has very little to do with the recent outings of the former Florida Marlin. Beckett has a 6.50 ERA over his last three starts for Boston.

Randy Johnson (New York Yankees) - Books have the Yankees as -114 road favorites tonight against the Chicago White Sox despite the Big Unit`s 7.14 ERA in his last three appearances. Johnson has a 1.76 WHIP over that span with only seven strikeouts in 15 innings pitched for New York.

Carlos Zambrano (Chicago Cubs) - Carlos Zambrano has finally cooled down after being a regular contributor to ***********`s streaking `hot` starting pitchers. Zambrano is a -113 favorite tonight at Miller Park in Miliwaukee despite a 5.68 ERA in three starts since July 25.

              Other notables:

Pedro Martinez (New York Mets) - Pedro has a 6.60 ERA his last three starts, but is favored tonight at home against the San Diego Padres.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - Santana has a 5-5 record away from the Metrodome this season with a 3.73 ERA.

NY Yankees at Chicago White Sox
The White Sox came up with some clutch hits last night in their 6-5 comeback win over the Yankees in 11 innings. The victory allowed Ozzie Guillen's team to stay a half-game in front of Minnesota in the wild card and showed that the defending champs still have some fight in them. Today the Chisox will face Randy Johnson, who continues to be inconsistent (1-2, 5.04 since the All-Star break), while Chicago's Jon Garland has won eight of his last nine starts. Chicago looks like a good play getting the run line at home according to Dunkel, which has the Yankees favored by only 1. Dunkel Pick: Chicago White Sox (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
