    Six-Pack for Monday
-- If you're up in Saratoga for track season, I recommend the Stadium Cafe for your dining pleasure; they have great food, not expensive, satellite TV, and waitresses who are, well.......really attractive. Excellent place to hang in summer.
-- In last two days, Twins scored 25 runs in pair of wins at Kansas City; in the two games, they had 34 hits, walked 16 times and struck out only seven times. Poor Buddy Bell.
-- Since July 6, the Devil Rays are 1-17 when they score less than six runs. This indicates a shaky bullpen.
-- If I'm Jose Reyes, I ask my agent how David Wright pulls in six years for $53M, while I got four years, $23.5M. Then when I didn't get a good answer, I'd fire my agent.
-- Giants' ace Jason Schmidt hasn't gotten an out past sixth inning in his last six starts; he went past sixth in 12 of his first sixteen starts prior to that.
-- How weird are the Dodgers? They win nine games in row, streak that started immediately after 1-13 skid ended.

Monday's Offseason look at the Packers......
      13) Brett Favre is back for another year in Green Bay; in 2005, Packers started out 0-4, losing three weeks in row by 2,1 and 3 points; they then went 3-2 in next five games, before dying down stretch with a 2-5 finish. Some people think Pack would be better off going with young QB Rodgers.

      12) Packers were 3-1 when they had positive turnover ratio in '05; problem is, that left 12 other games; they were -9 in TO's in first four games, then -9 again in last three. They turned the ball over 43 times (31st) and had -20 turnover ratio (31st).

      11) Green Bay threw 243 incomplete passes last year, 65 more than they forced (30th in NFL). Incomplete passes set up the long yard situations that create turnovers.

      10) Packer opponents started 30 drives in Green Bay territory, while Pack started only 16 drives in enemy territory. 96 points they allowed on drives started in their territory was 6th-most in NFL. If they're going to be better in '06, it has to go down.

      9) New coach McCarthy needs to get his team off to better starts; Pack was outscored 51-15 on opening drives last year, as Green Bay gained just 22.3 yards per opening drive (28th).

      8) On 32 half-opening drives, Packers gained just 22.9 yards per drive (30th) and were outscored 71-32. The addition of the young LB's should help defense get off to better starts; they allowed 34.6 yards per opening drive, not very good.

      7) Green Bay was 1-5 in division games last year, with only W by FG at home vs hapless Lions; Chicago ran ball for 135,139 yards against Pack, who lost both games vs Minnesota by a field goal. They were outrushed 102-46 in season opening L at Ford Field. Pack has to run the ball better to protect Favre.

      6) Packers lost seven of their eight road games, with only win 33-25 upset in Atlanta, when they were 9.5-point underdog.

      5) Packers open and close season with Bears; some imbecile put them at home for a Dec 21 night game against the Vikings. They have pair of Monday night road games, at Eagles in the fourth week, and at Seattle Week 12. Favre still has appeal.

      4) Favre can still make plays; Pack converted 41.2% on third down last year; their opponents hit on just 35.9% of theirs.

      3) Pack drafted two linebackers who should instantly help, and parlayed Javon Walker's trade into five draft picks, most of whom play offense, three of whom play on OL.

      2) Sherman is now the OL coach for Houston; was never sure how he got so much power in Packer organization. McCarthy was Packer assistant in '99, before moving to New Orleans to be offensive coordinator in Haslett administration. His aides come from all over the NFL, but it seems to be inexperienced group. QB coach Tom Clements could be big help to Favre.

      1) Speculation should start about Favre's future as soon as Packers lose a game; he is one of all-time greats, they should not be rushing him out the door. If they could run the ball a little and stop the run, Favre is still capable of leading squad into the playoffs. Just not sure the personnel is good enough.

                          Dunkel Index - MLB

                          Monday, August 7

                          Minnesota at Detroit
The Twins welcome back Francisco Liriano to the mound tonight as they open a big series in Detroit. Vegas makes Minnesota the favorite and for good reason as Liriano has not allowed more than four earned runs in any of his 14 starts while the Twins have gone 11-3 in those games. But beating Detroit on the road will not be easy as Minnesota has already found out. The Twins are 0-6 at Comerica this season and 3-9 in the series overall. The Tigers look like a good play getting the run line according to Dunkel, which has Minnesota favored by just 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Detroit (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
