    Six-Pack for Saturday

-- At any other point in the history of time has the National League had worse teams? Right now, two of their four in playoffs would be three games over .500, and Cardinals are 15-24 in their last 39 games- they're second best NL team.

-- Boy, do the Indians have an awful bullpen.

-- Barry Bonds' 715th home run ball sold for $220,100 on ebay this week. Bonds got tossed in ninth inning Friday for arguing balls/strikes-- after he had hit homer #723.

-- Losing offensive coordinator Chuck Long to San Diego State is now bigger problem for Oklahoma, since they have to coach up a kid to play QB that they had demoted to WR. Good luck with that one.

-- Are Jacksonville Jaguars only NFL team that sells beer at their training camp practices?

-- A's have now won ten straight games against Mariners.

Saturday's List of 13: A closer look at NFL officiating.........

Through the help of a buddy, *************** has gotten hold of the booklets NFL officials give out to the media each season; it is 75 pages, filled with diagrams, charts and stats that track a lot of the little things that occur in NFL games. Here are some of the more interesting tidbits I pulled out of this very interesting booklet……….

    13) While this is a great book, it is frustrating, because they don't include challenges and reversals by team, and by referee. You just know some refs are less likely to overturn a call than others, and it would be fun to know which ones were which. And it would also be great fun to see which coaches butchered the challenge system, and which ones used it to their advantage.

    12) For some reason, they do include team info for playoff games; since '99, Cowher is 7-9 on challenges in playoff tilts. . Reid is 4-6, Belichick 4-7. Jeff Fisher is 1-4; the Bucs are 2-6.

    11) In the last two NFL seasons, 31% of replay challenges were reversed in regular season (180-578), but in postseason games, 63% (20-32) of challenges were reversed.

    10) Confirming our theory that NFL games are over-officiated, there were 4,436 penalties called last year, the most since at least 1990; 84.6% of those were accepted. 1990 was last time less than 80% of penalties called were accepted.

    9) They're cracking down on DB's; in '01, there were 129 defensive holds called; last year, 247. In last two seasons, an average of 177.7 illegal contacts per season were called; in the nine years from 1995-2003, an average of 69.4 were called.

    8) In 81 of 256 games last year (32%) there were no replay reviews.

    7) The average length of a review last season was 1:07.

    6) When coaches challenge spot of ball to gain/overturn a first down, they were successful just 5 of 22 times (22.7%).

    5) Last year, there were 852 false starts called and 880 offensive holdings, both record highs. In 1990, there were only 408 false starts; why the increase?

    4) Rams had 47 false start penalties, nine more than any other team (Giants 38, Redskins 37). Hopefully the new coaching staff in St Louis can clean that up. Carolina had only 11 false starts all year.

    3) In case you were wondering, there were an average of 152.75 plays in an NFL game last year, with an average of 41.23 points scored.

    2) On challenges involving complete/incomplete passes; coaches were right on 44.8% of challenges involving balls officials ruled complete (13-29) but were 0-15 on balls that officials ruled incomplete.

    1) In 1990, roughing the passer was called 35 times; in last four years, it was called an average of 121 times. Somewhere in western Pennsylvania, Jack Lambert is growling.

                  HOT

Dan Haren (Oakland Athletics) - Haren is comming off two magnificent starts. He threw seven strong innings holding the Red Sox to four hits and one earned run on July 26 and then went the distance while allowing just one earned run against the Los Angeles Angels in his next outing. Both wins played under the total. Oakland takes on the Seattle Mariners today with oddsmakers listing the Athletics as -123 favorites and setting the total at 9. Haren is 3-1 with a 3.52 ERA in his career against the M`s.

Mike Mussina (New York Yankees) - The anchor of the Yankees pitching staff has been consistent again this year. Mussina is 13-3 with a respectable 3.40 ERA and 131 strikeouts and hasn`t taken a loss since June 15. In his last trip to the mound he allowed two earned runs on five hits in seven innings of work. Mussina is 7-1 with a 0.99 WHIP and a 3.28 ERA on the road this year and New York is in Baltimore to take on the Orioles tonight with the Yanks listed as -205 favorites.

Carlos Silva (Minnesota Twins) - The Twins may have the strongest pitching staff in baseball right now. With Johan Santana and rookie Francisco Liriano having spectacular seasons, Silva is starting to show signs that he`s no slouch either. He is 3-0 with a 4.43 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break. The Twins take on the Kansas City Royals tonight and in Silva`s last and only appearance against the Royals this season, he pitched seven innings allowing just one earned run in a 1-0 loss. Minnesota is a -144 favorite for the matchup.

                  COLD

Kenny Rogers (Detroit Tigers) - It seems like the same story every year with Rogers. He looks like a Cy Young candidate before the All-Star break and a minor-leaguer after it. Rogers started the season 11-3 but hasn`t won a game since July 5, allowing 32 runs in his last 31 innings pitched. Even more bad news for him may be that he`s facing the Cleveland Indians tonight. Two starts ago Rogers had possibly the worst outing of his career against the Indians. He recorded just two outs before getting the hook, allowing seven earned runs on five hits. The Tigers are listed as -136 favorites for tonight`s affair.

Javier Vazquez (Chicago White Sox) - Vasquez has been a model of consistancy lately, but not in a good way. In his last three starts he has given up five earned runs and has had one terrible inning them in each of them. Batters have had his number during their third look at him, hitting .377. He is 0-2 with a 7.79 ERA in his last three starts and hasn`t pitched past the sixth inning since May 18. The White Sox go up against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight with Chicago listed as a -124 favorite and the total set at 11. The over is 15-6 when Vazquez takes the mound this season.

Tom Glavine (New York Mets) - Usually Glavine can be found amongst the hot pitchers, but recently he has had his share of struggles. He is winless since June 23, going 0-2 with four no-decisions while posting a 5.68 ERA along the way. Over that stretch the Mets have played over the total in five of the seven games. In Glavine`s last outing he pitched just four innings, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits. New York hosts the Philiadelphia Phillies tonight with the Mets listed as -152 favorites and the total set at 9 1/2.

                  Other notables:

Josh Johnson (Florida Marlins) - Johnson allowed just one earned run on five hits in seven innings in his last start.

Jason Shiel (Atlanta Braves) - 0-2 with a 6.39 ERA in two starts for the Braves this season.
