    Six-Pack for Friday

-- Jose Reyes should fire his agent; four years for less than $6 million a year is not maximizing his earning potential, as Mets now have their own TV network a new ballpark on the way. He should be in the $10 million a year range.
-- Let's put it this way: I'm watching USA-Puerto Rico hoop on TV as I type this, and it doesn't do my American heart an ounce of good to see Jim Boeheim sitting on the bench as a "tactical expert". We couldn't do better than him? Hard to imagine Krzyzewski needing help in tactics from Jimmy B.
-- I mean, Boeheim recruits great athletes, lines 'em up in a summer league 2-3 zone, and they play 18 home games each season. As long as they put together a good combination of guys, and they seem to have done that, zone defense is not going to be the difference between winning and losing.
-- USA 114, Puerto Rico 69. Remember, Coach K isn't just a basketball coach, he's also an educator.
-- Dodgers are only two games out of Wild Card lead, even though they recently went through a 1-13 skid.
-- How does a state trooper who was booking bets from his patrol car get to cop a plea, so the state of New Jersey can nail a hockey coach? Isn't the trooper the bigger offender?

Friday's List of 13: Offseason look at the Detroit Lions.......

      13) How does Matt Millen keep his job? Detroit was 9-7 in '00, the year before Millen took over; since then, Lions are 21-59, losing 10+ games every year. Now he hires yet another coach so he buys himself some more time to screw up this franchise.

      12) After a 2-2 start last year, Lions went 3-9 rest of way, with wins over Browns, Cardinals, Saints, three awful teams. Out went Mariucci, in comes Marinelli- the names are smiliar, but the personalities are 180 degrees different. Marinelli is Marine type who comes from Tampa with a tough reputation. We'll see if it helps any, but Detroit will be different this season.

      11) Mike Martz comes into to run an offense that went 3/out on 36.8% of their drives last year, 5th-worst in NFL. For sure, Lions will be more fun to watch, even if they aren't any better.

      10) Detroit opponents started 13 more drives in Lion territory than Detroit did in theirs, so field position was problem; only three teams had more drives start in their own territory. It is hard enough to win, without surrendering the short field a lot.

      9) Detroit allowed 81 points on 32 half-opening drives; Titans were only team to allow more points. Lions were outscored on their first drive of game 36-13; it'll be interesting to see if Martz is aggressive early in games with Kitna under center.

      8) Lions are 11-29 vs AFC since '96, 4-16 since '01. They need improvement in every area, for sure, but with AFC East clubs facing them this year (all but Bills), this ia a serious red flag.

      7) Defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson gets to face his old club, the Jets, in Week 13 matchup at Ford Field. It has to help Detroit to be playing AFC East clubs, with Henderson having lot of recent experience in that division.

      6) Marinelli played two years of college football at Utah, then did year in Vietnam, came back and was NAIA All-American at Cal Lutheran. He coached high school ball for three years. Guys who have paid their dues are generally better coaches.

      5) Hate to be negative here, but last Lion coach to coach at least one season and finish with winning record was former Lion LB Joe Schmidt, who was 43-35-7 from 1967-72.

      4) Seattle visits Ford Field to open season, after they lost the Super Bowl on same field seven months ago. Martz visits his old stomping grounds in Week 4, after pair of division games. Miami is the traditional Thanksgiving Day opponent. At end of season, this dome team has cold weather games at Green Bay and Foxboro, then they finish season in Dallas.

      3) Lions drafted defensive players with first two picks, which fills two needs (S, LB) but they're lacking on offensive line; in the Martz offense, pass protections is vital, even moreso than usual, so if the OL can't protect, 5-man patterns aren't viable.

      2) Martz has been an NFL offensive coordinator for just one season, the Rams' Super Bowl season in '99; he doesn't have a reputation for working well with others. Unless Jon Kitna is another miracle worker, it'll be interesting to see how the Lion offense does, with lot of high draft picks at WR.

      1) Marinelli has reputation as tough guy, so Lions are going to try and run the ball, protecting their defense as much as is possible. Problem is, Martz loves the pass- if he would have run ball in Super Bowl vs Patriots, he'd still be coaching with the Rams. At least the Lions should be more interesting in '06.

Jon Garland (Chicago White Sox) - Garland hasn`t lost a start since June 13, going 7-0 in eight starts over that stretch and improving his overall record to 11-3 with a 5.01 ERA. He has the pleasure of going up against the struggling Blue Jays, who have lost their last five games but will be sending ace Roy Halladay to the mound. Garland has had success versus Toronto with a 7-2 career record to go along with a 4.16 ERA. The White Sox are listed as +157 underdogs.

Carlos Zambrano (Chicago Cubs) - Believe it or not, the Cubs are on a 11-3 run and they have their ace on the hill today. Zambrano is 12-3 with a 3.26 ERA and 152 strikeouts on the season and has won his last six starts. The Cubs host the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight with oddsmakers listing Chicago as a heavy -201 favorite.

Roy Oswalt (Houston Astros) - Now that he`s clear of any trade talks, Oswalt should be albe to settle in and get back to doing what he has done in past years - win. There is no better team for him to start with than the Arizona Diamondbacks. Oswalt has been almost untouchable in his career against the D-Backs, going 5-0 with an incredible 0.95 ERA and 36 strikeouts. He has won his last two starts and went eight strong innings giving up just one earned run on six hits, while striking out eight in his last outing. The Astros are -120 favorites in tonight`s matchup.

Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) - Even though he took the loss in his last start, Francis has been red hot recently with a 1.17 ERA in his last three. In the loss he pitched seven innings allowing just five hits and two earned runs with both runs coming off homers. He has gone at least seven innings in each of the last three outings, including a complete game two-hitter. The Rockies are -102 road dogs in San Francisco against the Giants (-106) tonight.

                  COLD

James Shields (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - After a promising 4-0 start to his major league career, Shields has come back down to earth with a thud. In that start he pitched five innings allowing five earned runs on just four hits with three of the four hits being home runs. Books have set the D-Rays as +187 underdogs for the affair.

Derek Lowe (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Lowe has just three wins in his last 10 games and has allowed more than five runs three times during that period.
