    Six-Pack for Thursday

-- How awful is the National League? Other than the Mets, is there another good team in the whole league?
-- Final count of entrants in World Series of Poker was an astonishing 8,773, 270 of whom were females. First place is expected to be over $12M, million, with an M.
-- Former Ohio State hoop coach Jim O'Brien was awarded $2.2M from court that said Buckeyes wrongfully fired him few years ago. NCAA rules are odd; O'Brien gave a kid $6G because his dad was dying and he had no money for either medicine or a funeral. The NCAA can be heartless.
-- Tom Watson has played in nine events on Senior Tour this year, and has won $704,650. Nice part-time job.
-- How would you like to be Fidel Castro's surgeon? Now that is pressure, my friend.............
-- If Cuba were to become free country again, ballplayers in that country would be highly sought after free agents, but shouldn't they be subject to free agent draft, so everyone could have a shot at acquiring them?

Thursday's List of 13: Checking out the SEC in 2006......

The SEC, for me, is most fun conference in college football. Highly competitive, with huge fan bases, even at a school like Ole Miss, they can a coach who had six winning years out of seven (David Cutcliffe). Of course, another SEC team gobbled him up as a coordinator (Tennessee). The SEC is like one big dysfunctional family, all scheming to beat each other.

Without further ado, here is quick glance at all twelve teams, with the start of college pigskin season only four weeks away

Alabama-- How do they replace QB Croyle, a great leader? It will help if explosive WR Prothro is healthy again, but with a lone senior starting on OL, and three new DB's, they'll have a hard time winning any of their four road games.

Arkansas-- They brought in bigtime QB recruit, then hired his HS coach as new offensive coordinator. Nutt on hot seat, but broken toe by RB McFadden in recent bar fight has him a ?? for USC game Sept 2. Hogs need to win this year, or else.......

Auburn-- There are claims that at-risk students were pushed to take easier classes; REALLY??? Hell, if they weren't, you'd fire the academic coordinator. Auburn's 16-1 in its last 17 SEC games, the interior of their OL is seniors, and they have a QB who led team to 9-3 record last year.

Florida-- Is Leak the right QB for Meyer's offense? Will they be able to run ball better, with ?'s on OL? Gators are thin at CB, and fanbase is spoiled. Can they beat Spurrier when the Ol' Ball Coach comes back home with his Gamecocks? There is hotshot frosh QB waiting to take over if Leak falters.

Georgia-- Richt just signed 8-year contract extension, but he's 1-4 vs Florida, has three new starters on OL, and questions at QB; overall, 13 of his 22 starters graduated, but he doesn't go to Florida or Tennessee (he never goes to Fla) and two of his four road games are Ole Miss, Kentucky, two must-win tilts.

Kentucky-- Brooks is good coach; he built Oregon program, but it took him over a decade, and SEC folks don't have that kind of patience. Hoop practice starts Oct 15. Randy Sanders, scapegoat for Tennessee's problems, is new QB coach. Look at their schedule; they can sneak into a bowl game (6-6/7-5).

LSU-- Offensive balance is Job 1 for Tigers, who had a bizarre season in '05, on heels of Katrina. Their '06 schedule is really hard, with games at Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas- and then Alabama and giant-killer Fresno State pay a visit to Death Valley. 11 starters back is third-least in SEC.

Ole Miss--That huge sigh of relief was Rebel coaches when it was announced that JC transfer QB Schaeffer (ex-Tennessee QB) became eligible this week. Without him offense was in a deep hole. When Miami Hurricanes shook up their coaching staff, Orgeron hired couple of them, and that is an upgrade.

Mississippi State-- You can make fun of Jackie Sherrill, but in our lifetime, who else has won in Starkville? State doesn't get to play Vandy this year, they go to Ole Miss, and some idiot put West Virginia on their schedule. They're only going to be favored in three of their twelve games this season, despite a veteran lineup with eight starters back on both sides of ball.

South Carolina-- Some guys just win, no matter where they're coaching; Spurrier got Duke into a bowl, so South Carolina is cake compared to that job. Gamecocks' road games are easy as possible in SEC, other than trip to Swamp- they get Dawgs Vols, Hogs, Auburn all at home in Year 2 of Ball Coach era.

Tennessee-- 5-6 was decent year at Vandy; it was holy hell in Knoxville, and Fulmer is under fire; he brings in Cutcliffe to coach QB Ainge, who was awful last year. Opening with Cal, Air Force and Florida in first three games is recipe for disaster especially with six starters gone on Vol defense.

Vanderbilt-- After watching NFL Draft, I was convinced Jay Cutler was next ****** U, then I remembered Vandy was 5-6 last year and lost to both Kentucky and Middle Tennessee, ao how good could he have been? Vandy is 8-1 vs spread in last nine tries as road dog, but they open season at Michigan and Alabama- what genius made that schedule?

              Hot streaks

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - Beckett has given up just six runs in 20 innings over his last three starts, going 2-0 over that span. With a victory, Beckett can match Detroit rookie Justin Verlander for the major league lead in wins. The Red Sox are listed as -154 favorites.

Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels) - Weaver became the first rookie in 25 years to win his first seven starts but did not factor into the decision in his last start. Weaver has a dominating 1.51 ERA through eight games and opposing batters are hitting only .160 against the rookie righthander. The Angels are -146 favorites against Texas.

Greg Maddux (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Maddux looked like a future Hall of Famer in his last trip to the mound. The four-time Cy Young Award winner pitched six innings in his final start with the Cubs, giving up one run and five hits with six strikeouts in a 4-2 victory over St. Louis on Saturday. He will try to win his third consecutive start after a personal six-game losing streak. The Dodgers are +110 underdogs against Reds starter Eric Milton.

              Cold streaks

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) - Hudson tries to rebound from one of his shakiest outings of the season for Atlanta. The right-hander gave up a season-high nine runs and 10 hits over 5 2-3 innings of an 11-3 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday. Hudson is 2-2 with a 3.18 ERA in four career starts versus the Pirates. The Braves are still favored at -141 against Shawn Chacon and the Pirates.

Jake Westbrook (Cleveland Indians) - Westbrook lost his third straight start on Saturday, allowing two runs and six hits in eight innings of a 3-1 loss to Seattle. He has received just one run of support in each of his last two outings, but has a 5.09 ERA during his losing streak. He is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA in four career starts against the Red Sox. The Indians are +146 underdogs.

              Other notables

Cory Lidle (New York Yankees) - Lidle will make his debut for the New York Yankees. He is 4-0 with a 3.58 ERA in his last four outings.

Nate Robertson (Detroit Tigers) - Robertson looks for his thrid straight win and needs two victories to match his single-season career high set in 2004.

                Toronto at NY Yankees
Cory Lidle makes his first start today for the Yankees as they close out their series with the Blue Jays. Both parties look to be hot right now as Lidle won his last four starts with the Phils while the Yankees have won seven of their last eight. Against a Toronto team that continues to struggle on the road, the Yankees look like a solid play to cover the run line today according to Dunkel, which has New York favored by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: NY Yankees (-1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
