    Six-Pack for Wednesday
-- Huge sigh of relief in Oxford, Mississippi, where Brent Schaeffer has finally become academically eligible after he passed summer classes at College of the Sequoias. Without Schaeffer at QB, Ole Miss was in for a very long season.
-- Why are night airplane flights less crowded than daytime flights? They're more likely to be delayed, especially in the summer, when there are lot of thunderstorms.
-- Give Brian Cashman credit for landing Abreu and Lidle at the trading deadline. With Varitek now on the DL, Red Sox are going to be hard pressed to make the playoffs.
-- When Cal State-Fullerton won NCAA baseball title back in '95, A's OF Mark Kotsay not only hit two homers in title game, he pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
-- Brian Finneran's injury will hurt the Falcons a lot-- he was their best possession receiver.
-- Congrats to Reverend Jack for his eagle on 9th hole at Mohawk River Monday, once again proving that even the blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our look at the Denver Broncos
      13) Denver had terrific year in '05, going 13-3 after losing their opener 34-10; they beat Patriots in playoffs, but lost at home to Steelers, and just when Jake Plummer thought Denver was home for rest of his career, Broncos drafted Jay Cutler and gave him contract worth up to as much as $48M. Ouch.

      12) Cutler led Vanderbilt to a 5-6 record last year, which is big year in Nashville, but they lost Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, so they should have been a bowl team. Not only did they go pick a QB, they traded up to do it. Not good for ol' Jake.

      11) Some would say Denver needed RB (Laurence Maroney?) more than another QB; Broncos drafted a TE and two WRs in later rounds, taking only one defender in whole draft. They've got new offensive coordinator in Heimerdinger, so adding of javon Walker and two new WR's should help passing game.

      10) Broncos were 8-1 in last nine games last year; they went 9-0 at home until losing AFC title game, and also won seven of their eight AFC West games, losing only at Arrowhead. it will be tough to duplicate that 7-1 record this season.

      9) Denver turned ball over only 16 times last year, best in NFL good for +20 turnover margin (2nd); their 36 takeaways were 4th in league. They threw 69 less incomplete passes than the opponents did. This isn't team that needed a new QB.

      8) Part of reason Broncos were so good is that opponents, in 16 games, started only ten drives in Denver territory (Denver started 24 drives in enemy territory).

      7) Their defense forced 3-and-outs on only 27.1% of drives, 3rd-worst in NFL. part of that is they were less aggressive in games they led by big margins, but still, drafting a tackle for e defensive line could have been better move than extra WR.

      6) Broncos started 60 drives 80+ yards from goal line, and got 112 points on those drives, 4th-best average in NFL.

      5) Shanahan got his team off to good starts last year, with a 40-10 scoring edge on first drive of games, 3rd-best margin in league. Broncos' 39.3 yards per opening drive was 5th-best in NFL; their foes' 18.9 yard average was second-lowest.

      4) First drive of second half was more of same, with Broncos outscoring foes 45-13; on 32 half-opening drives, Denver's defense allowed just 20.1 yards per drive, best figure in NFL.

      3) Denver opens this year in St Louis, then hosts Chiefs and visit Patriots before their Week 4 bye. Their visit to Kansas City is one of those new Thursday night games NFL Network has. They get warm weather trips to Arizona, San Diego in December. In Weeks 10-14, they play four division games in what will be critical five-game stretch

      2) Jake Plummer has to be looking over his shoulder with the Cutler situation; can Broncos still run ball well, with a suspect crew of RB's? Teams sometimes slide after losses at home in playoffs. This will be very interesting season in the Rockies.

      1) Shanahan finally won playoff game without Elway under center; now he has to handle potential QB controversy, in a season after Plummer had his best year protecting the ball. If I said I understood Broncos drafting Cutler, I'd be lying.
