The Red Sox television network is reporting that Jason Varitek (knee) is out for "a while" and "several weeks" and the Yankees television network has reported he might be out "six weeks." Either way, it looks like the twisted knee that he suffered in Monday's game against the Indians is likely to force him out for an extended period.

If he just needs the torn cartilage cleaned up, he'll probably be back in 4-6 weeks. If he needs a plug or microfracture, he's done for the season.

I had microfracture surgery in June 2005 and haven't played an inning since.

During the first inning of the Indians-Red Sox game, the telecast is reporting MRI results showed a torn meniscus and he is likely out at least four to six weeks as a surgical procedure will be needed. He has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and Ken Huckaby was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace him.

Report: Varitek to have surgery on injured kneeESPN.com news services

Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek will have arthroscopic surgery for cartilage damage in the left knee he injured in Monday night's game, The Boston Globe reported.

The club gave no indication Monday how long Varitek, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list, would be out. Veteran Ken Huckaby was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket.

In the second inning against the Cleveland Indians, Varitek rounded the base after taking second on Coco Crisp's single. He stepped gingerly on his way back to second and then scored on Wily Mo Pena's triple.

Varitek stayed in the game in the top of the third, but Doug Mirabelli pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the inning and went in to catch in the fourth.

Boston's captain was appearing in his 1,000th game at catcher, the 106th major-leaguer to do that. Carlton Fisk, who played with Boston and the Chicago White Sox, is the career leader with 2,226.

Varitek had played in 85 of Boston's 104 games and is hitting .243 with 11 homers and 50 RBI. In 30 games before Monday, Mirabelli was hitting .182 with three homers and 14 RBI in 77 at-bats.

Varitek had been struck on the knee in the last inning of Saturday's 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels in 11 innings when he blocked home plate and tagged out Mike Napoli on a throw from left fielder Manny Ramirez.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

When you have worthless, useless turds like Jason Johnson pitching, it frankly doesn't matter who is catching, as Sox will need probably a minimum of 7 or 8 runs to win.

We will see what Sox are made up-Yankees have done amazing well with at least three key players out.
Its going to be tough, and as a Sox fan, without him, Nixon and Wakefield, the upcoming series with Yankees does not look promising.

He would never make it through the waiver wire to boston!

They would have a better chance if the Yankees were in 1st place and couldn't block the waiver!
