      Six Pack for Tuesday

-- I'm home now, but down in Orlando, City Rocks lost 74-59 in semi-finals of national tournament to team from Virginia; they beat team from Jacksonville 80-75 Monday afternoon. Excellent run for the team from this area.

-- There are still 420 drive-in theaters in this country.

-- Corey Pavin has won 18 PGA Tour events; his average rank in driving distance in those 18 tournaments was 123rd.

-- Dan Haren was awesome Monday night, beating Angels
3-1 as Bradley, Payton homered and A's stay in first place.

-- Is there anyone left in Pittsburgh? Pirates tried to trade Bill Mazeroski, but were told you can't trade guys who quit 34 years ago. Funny thing, Pirates won their last five games

-- How awesome is David Ortiz? He hit another walkoff HR to beat Indians Monday, as Tribe used new closer Carmona in situation he just isn't ready for.

Tuesday's List of 13: Ways to impress college recruiters

After ten full days of watching basketball, it occured that kids might not be fully aware of what coaches look for when they scout these tournaments. Here, in my opinion, are little bit of what coaches are looking for when looking at prospects.

        13) College coaches make lot of money; if they lose, they get fired, so the best way to impress one of these guys is show them that you can help them win. Simple as that.

        12) Shooting, defense, rebounding, passing-- do as many of these things really well, and make yourself marketable. To me, that is the paradox of AAU ball; it allows you to be seen by the big boys, but it takes so much time away from a kid going to a gym and developing his skills, which hurts the player.

        11) You get smarter doing homework and studying, not when you take tests; player gets better doing drills and working on skills. Games are how players exhibit how he has improved his game. Not enough kids do individual practicing, which is part of why so many kids are deficient at shooting.

        10) Don't bitch at refs, teammates, coaches, fans. Players who help a team win are resilient, mentally tough and bounce back from adversity. Every team has down periods- a coach needs kids who will stay the course and play through adversity.

        9) Make your teammates better; don't leak out, letting your teammates rebound-- help them, play as a team. show that in crunch time, you can be depended on.

        8) Don't be a distraction off the court; the better player you are, the more a coach will put up with, thats just reality, but in a perfect world, the marketable player is no distraction at all.

        7) We watched a kid score 25 points in a half last week, but it was annoying, every time he scored, and he was on fire, he'd scream like a banshee, bringing attention to himself. This isn't a good idea-- I asked coaches about it- they don't like it.

        6) That said, any kid who scored 25 points in a half will get a chance for exposure-- no matter what coaches say, they like kids who put ball in the basket. They just prefer quiet ones.

        5) Be as physical as you can without fouling a lot-- play until you hear a whistle. Any kid who plays regularly and doesn't get called for foul now and then isn't playing hard enough.

        4) Handle ball with both hands; be able to take the ball with dribble in either direction. Be skilled at reverse layups with either hand. Make your free throws. These are all things you can practice on your own, with you, a ball and a hoop.

        3) Be a good passer; see the court, know your teammates and get them easy hoops. People will love you to be on their side.

        2) If I were advising a kid on what impresses coaches, I'd ask the kid what kind of players he likes playing with on in pickup games. Kids who pass, who screen, defend, rebound. Players who will keep you on court in winner-stays atmosphere.

        1) Again, the bottom line is, be fundamentally sound, and be a good teammate who makes his teammates better and helps his team win. Who was the most fundamentally sound player of all time? Michael Jordan, underneath all the highlights. Be the best you can be, help your teammates, and you'll find that lot of teams will want you to play for them.

          Oakland at LA Angels
The A's pulled out a win last night against the Angels to give themselves a little breathing room in the ultra-tight A.L. West. Tonight Oakland will throw Joe Blanton, who has won three straight against playoff contenders Detroit, Toronto and Boston. Getting 1 1/2 runs tonight looks like a good play for Oakland according to Dunkel, which has the A's favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Oakland (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                  Hot Streaks

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - Smoltz has not been tagged for a loss since June 13 against the Florida Marlins. He continues to keep his ERA at a very respectable mark, sitting at 3.55 coming into tonight`s game against the Pirates. He`s 2-0 in his last three and oddsmakers favor his Braves tonight at -158.

Scott Olsen (Florida Marlins) - When Olsen takes the hill for the Marlins you can count on a quality start. Florida is 7-1 the last eight times he`s taken the mound for night games. Over his last three games he`s been lights out, going 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA and he didin`t surrender a single home run. He takes on the NL`s best, the New York Mets, tonight as a -103 favorite.

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - Verlander continues to roll for the Tigers this season. He`s 6-0 in his last eight games and he`s managed over five strikeouts per game during that stretch. His latest surge has boosted his season record to 13-4 and books have made him a heavy favorite to dispose of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays tonight at -226.

Jeff Suppan (St. Louis Cardinals) - Suppan seems to have found his location for the Cardinals, going 2-0 in his last three games with a staggering 0.90 ERA. He`s 4-1 at home this season and is favored tonight at -147 when St. Louis plays host to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Joe Blanton (Oakland Athletics) - After a rough start to the season, Blanton has turned things around at just the right time. The A`s are just 1 1/2 games up on the Angels in the AL West and Blanton hopes to build on his current three-game winning streakl. He`s a +104 underdog tonight against the Angels in Game 2 of their crucial series.

                  Cold Streaks

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia has seen his record and ERA take a downward spiral lately, losing his last three starts while giving up over nine hits per outing. He`ll have his work cut out for him tonight against the AL East leading Boston Red Sox as a -115 favorite.

Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox) - Buerhle was nothing short of awful for the White Sox in the month of July. He lost five straight starts and gave up nearly seven earned runs per game during that stretch. He has a shot to get back in the win column tonight against the always-struggling Kansas City Royals as a -168 favorite.

                  Other Notables

Ian Snell (Pittsburgh Pirates) - Snell is 8-3 in night games this season, averaging nearly five Ks per game
