    Six-Pack for Monday
-- How in God's name do the Phillies give away Cory Lidle and Bobby Abreu, and get nothing but minor leaguers in return? Another reason why baseball is so fouled up-- it is sad when All-Stars get traded for minor leaguers.
-- When BJ Ryan blew save Sunday, it was just third time in Halladay's last 21 starts Toronto lost.
-- Before Milton Bradley hit his walk-off homer, it was Mark Kotsay's 12-pitch walk that kept the game alive. A's-Angels Monday will decide who is in first place, for now.
-- Red Sox had their 274th consecutive home sellout when they lost to the Angels Sunday; thats over three years.
-- Latest exercise fad for women in Florida is Pole Dancing, where strippers instruct class in how to dance like strippers do. Apparently, classes fill up quickly, and not with guys who just want to watch.
-- Corey Pavin won his first golf tournament in ten years on Sunday, earning $720,000; his last win netted him $270,000, and when he won in Milwaukee twenty years ago, he got a winner's check worth $72,000. Now thats progress.

Monday's List of 13: Lights go dim, team in orange wins....
      13) At 10pm, about half the lights in the Milk House went out, but scoreboards stayed on, and it was bright enough to play, and oddly enough, the team with loudest uniforms shone the brightest from that point on.

      12) City Rocks, with most of their kids coming from within 50 miles of Albany, pulled away from Florida Stars down stretch to win by 9 (they were up one when lights went out with less than 4:00 left), advancing to Elite Eight of national tourney.

      11) Earlier in day, City Rocks pulled off wild comeback with a 100-95 win over Queen City Prophets (Cincinnati) after they had trailed by 13 late in third quarter. So on a night when the lights nearly went out, it paid to have bright orange uniforms.

      10) It is more important to have excellent perimeter play, with Fredette (rumored to BYU), Battle (Class of '08 to Penn State) and Lyons (Class of '08; not even sure where he is playing in high school next year) taking both games over down stretch.

      9) Lyons' situation will be interesting; he has more than some Terrell Owens in him, and was tossed from squad last season at Schenectady High. He played well enough this weekend to merit scholarship consideration, but when they check into his grades and high school career, it isn't going to help him.

      8) Coach Tim Moseman did excellent job, especially in Queen City game, keeping his team pasted together during difficult times. They play in quarterfinals Monday afternoon at 2:30.

      7) Elsewhere, on my last day down here, you knew it was big day when first person I saw in the gym was Roy Williams. Lot of big names in the house Sunday: Izzo, Donovan, Williams, Tubby Smith and Tim Floyd, (watching OJ Mayo play). Even former Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams ducked into the gym for while, checking out the air-conditioned hoop action.

      6) Lebron James' fantastic start to his career makes it harder for OJ Mayo, in my opinion, because it is so difficult to live up to the tremendous hype this kid has gotten. His team has not lost down here, but they haven't blown anyone out, so it is almost like you feel disappointed watching him play, when in reality, he is a fine player who is extremely tough taking the ball to the basket. Anyone would love to have him, and that probably includes a few NBA teams.

      5) Today is July 31; I remember my first night here, hearing a kid from Iowa saying he hadn't been home since July 3, and wouldn't get home until August 1 or 2. Long month for these kids-- hope they enjoyed the experience.

      4) Minnesota Magic player Jon Leuer is 6-9 with soft touch from perimeter; he had lot of people watching him play.

      3) Subtle change for Cincinnati Bearcats; they're now Adidas team, instead of Nike, when Bob Huggins was coach there. Not sure what it means, but my Nike flexfit Bearcat hat might be a collector's item now.

      2) Speaking of Huggins; as soon as it came out that recruit Herb Pope had been sent home, for punching out someone in the hotel (an assistant coach, we were told), the Kansas State coaches weren't seen again.

      1) Weird moment of the day: after Queen City flurry that gave them bit of a cushion vs City Rocks (a lead they would lose at the end), the Prophets' coach yelled over at Tommy Amaker, who was sitting four chairs to my right.........."Thats why you came to see this game, Tommy, thats why you came!!!!"

Amaker had no idea why the coach was yelling at him- it was the first and only time he did it the whole game. Guess he'd be happy if Michigan recruited some of his players.

          BETTING THE OVERS

Inside the numbers: This year`s MLB over trend

          By Jeff Mason
          Sat, Jul 29, 2006

Only seven teams in baseball played over more than they played under in 2005. So you can guess what’s happened this season.

That’s right, the over is dominating. Heading into Friday’s action, 1520 games have been played in the 2006 season, and 768 of those games have played over.

Combine that with 697 unders and 55 pushes and you get 52.4 percent of all baseball games this season playing over.

Amazingly, anyone who played over in every baseball game this season with –110 juice would be up 1.18 units. A profit, sure, but that’s certainly a lot of work for what amounts to a little over a unit over the course of the season.

“Bettors will always love the over because your bet is always alive right down to the last pitch,” says a bookmaker at Bodog.com. “(We’ve) fared well this year. Even though there have been some 20+ run games, there have also been some young stars making a statement on the mound.”

Only six teams in baseball are playing under more than over this season. Though many of those playing under are doing it at quite a clip. The Colorado Rockies (39-56-7), Detroit Tigers (40-59-3) and Texas Rangers (43-56-4) have combined to go 122-171-14 over/under this season.

The weak-hitting, power-pitching National League is also an over haven. Only two teams, Colorado and the Houston Astros (48-49-6), have more unders than overs, leaving 14 of 16 NL teams making money on the over.

Ten of 14 AL teams are playing over, but only three, the Cleveland Indians (58-40-3), Baltimore Orioles (55-44-5) and the Los Angeles Angels (54-43-5), rank among baseball’s top 10 over teams, and only Cleveland ranks among the top seven.

Overall, American League teams have combined to go 709-670-49 (51.4 percent) while National League teams have combined to go 849-728-61 (53.8 percent).

“Last year around this time, we were talking about the decline in runs scored and attributing it to the new steroid policies,” says the Bodog.com bookmaker. “This year, we`ve seen some monster scores as the ‘save some offense for tomorrow’ mentality has been thrown out the window.”

For a closer look at how totals have progressed throughout the year, let’s break things down month-by-month.

          April (190-158-18 over/under)

Oddsmakers were clearly expecting the decline of the steroid era to have an impact on the offense as it did last season. The average total in April was just 9.01, but the average total score was 9.85.

All things equal, when you put April’s average total and April’s average runs scored up against each other, teams should be playing over 52.2 percent of the time, which is right on the season average. But as the numbers show, teams actually played over 54.6 percent of the time.

Essentially that means that games playing over were just barely playing over, while games playing under were playing well under. It’s a tough thing to do, as a game can play over by an infinite amount, but can only play under by so much.

          May (212-190-20)

Things evened out a little more in May as the books began to get a better gauge on what they were dealing with in 2006. The average total remained relatively steady at 9.04 and the average score dropped down to 9.68 runs per game.

The result was the frequency of overs dropping to 52.7 percent and the predicted over frequency dropping to 51.7.

          June (188-200-12)

Things finally got interesting in June, when we saw the first big rise in totals. The average total for the month was the highest yet at 9.3 and, strangely enough, June also saw the lowest average score at just 9.57 runs per game.

This was the type of month oddsmakers are used to. Over paid in just 48.4 percent of games and for the first time all season, the predicted over frequency was actually higher than the actual over frequency at 50.7.

          July (178-147-5)

Heading into Friday night’s games, July was battling April for the most profitable over month. Over is cashing at 54.8 percent in July as teams finally appear to be finding their offensive stoke with the weather warming up.

July’s offensive production is the highest by far with teams combining to average 10.27 runs per game.

But oddsmakers aren’t adjusting to the offensive explosion. Totals are actually decreasing slightly from June’s numbers with the average total at 9.27.

As appears to be the case with months where over prevails, there is quite a difference between the actual and predicted overs. Looking at the average runs scored against the average total for July shows that over should be paying only 52.6 percent of the time.

                        Hot Streaks

Josh Johnson (Florida Marlins) - Johnson has been a solid middle rotation starter for the Marlins this season. He`s posted eight wins and a very respectable 2.60 ERA. Over his last three games he`s averaged six strikeouts. He squares off against Jon Lieber and the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon as a +107 underdog.

Brandon Webb (Arizona Diamondbacks) - Webb continues to roll as the Diamondbacks ace. His 2.64 ERA and 11-4 record make him one of the best pitchers in the majors this year. He went 2-1 in his last three while striking out an average of six batters per game. He`s a -119 favorite tonight against Mark Prior and the Chicago Cubs.

Ervin Santana (Los Angels Angels) - The Angels are going to need Santana to continue the success he had in the first half of the season in order to make a postseason run. He`s 11-4 on the year with a 4.25 ERA and averages just under five strikeouts per outing. He`ll look to get his Angels off on the right foot tonight against division rival Oakland as a -124 favorite.

                        Cold Streaks

Gil Meche (Seattle Mariners) - Meche is 1-1 in his last three starts with a 6.62 ERA which raised his season ERA to 4.19. In his last game against Toronto he gave up a season-high seven earned runs. He`s a -114 favorite tonight against the Orioles.

Kenny Rogers (Detroit Tigers) - Rogers has seen his early season success dwindle over his past three trips to the mound. He`s 0-1 with a 10.97 ERA and has averaged just over three innings pitched per start. He`s a -156 favorite tonight against the Devil Rays.

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Contreras hasn`t notched a win since July 4, giving up more than four earned runs per game over that span. He`s a -134 favorite tonight against the Kansas City Royals.

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) - Capuano has struggled in his last three games going 0-2 with a 8.22 ERA while serving up seven long balls. His strikeout numbers fell as well, averaging just three per game. He takes on Aaron Cook and the Colorado Rockies tonight in a pick `em.

                        Other Notables

Danny Haren (Oakland Athletics) - 7-9 season record, 3.89 ERA with 111 strikeouts.

I just checked, dj, and I guess this is just one of those days when the ump trends are not included. It seems to happen once or twice a week. Good luck tonight!
