                      Six Pack for Sunday

-- In 536 career starts, Randy Johnson failed to strike out a batter in only five starts. Saturday was the fifth.
-- David Ortiz got his 11th walkoff hit since '03, tying Astros manager Phil Garner for most walkoffs in four-year span in the divisional era (since 1969).

-- Ty Wigginton is out 4-6 weeks after getting hit by a pitch Saturday; will DRays bring up BJ Upton, or will he have to pay a price for an article in USA Today this week, where three Tampa farmhands complained about the parent club, and how slowly prospects are brought to big leagues.

-- Tampa Bay scored eight runs in Jae Seo's first five starts with DRays; they scored 19 in his sixth start Saturday.

-- Bruce Sutter gets inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame on Sunday, but until Pete Rose gets in, does it really matter?

-- Golfer Paul Azinger had raised his chip stack 50% by the dinner break at the second day of World Series of Poker, so he looks pretty good to survive his first day; first round is divided into four different days. .

Sunday's List of 13: Observations from Hoopville:

As the National Championships enter the second day of the bracket round Sunday, whoch is also my last day down here some random observations of what I've seen............

                        13) Very active major program: DePaul; they have three guys, including head coach Wainwright- they've been everywhere.

                        12) They have the backboards here that light up when clock hits 0:00, but twice yesterday, controversial endings of games weren't helped by the boards-- Minnesota Magic won game on 35-footer that was blatantly after board had lit up, then a Kentucky team tied game on call that was so close that it was evenyl divided on whether the call was right. Kentucky went on to win the game in overtime.

                        11) Was totally impressed by shooting and athleticism of kid named Chris Lightner of Garner Road Bulldogs; turns out he is son of former NC State player Chris Washburn.

                        10) Garner Road is only summer team I've ever seen that has its own cheerleaders, uniforms and all.

                        9) Best uniforms: Cleveland Titans, wine and gold just like the Cavaliers. Titans' coach has son as point guard and wife as a assistant coach-- he does good job with team that scared the tough SYF team in close loss Thursday.

                        8) Big kid on Chicago Jaguars (#50; the roster book is out in the rental car) has quite a following; everywhere he goes, the bigtime coaches turn out by the dozen.

                        7) Siena has been around a lot; they were watching guards on New Jersey Roadrunner team Friday. Sitting six seats away from Coach McCaffery was Duquesne assistant. Everything seemed civil enough. UAlbany has their recruiting done for Class of '07, so they haven't had as much of presence, though they were here for the 16's.

                        6) Most fun team to watch: Other than Mayo/Walker and the Greyhounds, York Stars are team that plays two point guards, has no real big guys, they run like hell, pass it around, shoot lot of 3's. They won their last pool game 99-89, and gave the Gauchos a tough battle earlier that day. We saw them down in Houston, then at Gym Rat; they continue to improve.

                        5) One D-I assistant coach I talked to Friday was complaining about how lot of summer coaches now hold more influence over a kid's college choice than his high school coach does, and not all summer coaches have kid's best interest at heart (Not all high school coaches do, either, but on average, the average HS coach is more honorable in this area).

                        4) The SEC holds its referees' tryouts as part of this tourney, so does the MEAC. Another three courts are manned by a referees' clinic, where guys pay to come ref, then are rated by some of our nation's finest officials. They come to learn, get better, just like the players do.

                        3) To me, one of the best parts of coming to this event every day is seeing teams from all over country face off against kids they'd never play against otherwise. Kids from Oklahoma vs kids from New York City, or Philly kids vs Louisiana players, so on and so forth. It is part of reason college kids play well earlier in their careers, because they're used to travel and the tougher competition that summer ball provides.

                        2) Court 1 was an hour behind, due to triple OT game early in day, so last game started at 11pm, and good game it was, with Martin Brothers (Iowa) playing Charlotte Royals, with forty or so coaches in attendance. Royals used their athleticism to steal couple of key inbounds passes to win game, which got over well after midnight.

                        1) Sunday is my last day here-- big day of games. We'll have a wrapup of all the action posted tonight, before I hop on the big bird and head home Monday morning.
