  • New NCAA Football Rules

I haven't heard too much talk about this. The clock is going to be running much more than in years past since the NCAA thinks their games are too long. These new rules are expected to shave between 10 - 12 plays off of a typical game (one long scoring drive). Could be more unders early until the lines adjust accordingly. Any thoughts?

    Rule 3-2-1-b, Halftime
Change: The intermission between halves, which begins when the field is clear of all players and coaches, shall be 20 minutes. The home team administration may lengthen or shorten the 20 minutes by previous agreement of the visiting team administration.

Rationale: This is an attempt to shorten the length of time it takes to play the game.

    Rule 3-2-5, When Clock Starts
Change: When the ball is free-kicked, the game clock will be started and subsequently stopped when the ball is dead by rule.

Rationale: By starting the clock when the foot touches the ball on kicks, the length of time to play the game will be less.

    Rule 3-2-5-e, When Clock Starts
Change: When Team B is awarded a first down, the clock will be stopped and will start on the ready for play signal.

Rationale: By starting the clock, the committee estimates it will shorten the game by about five minutes, according to studies by several Division I-A conferences.

My guess is that the line makers will be on top of this and will have it properly adjusted by week 2 or 3. The may even be adjusted by the 1st week.

Fan, I can't see it making a big difference in scoring. Certainly not enough to blindly favor the UNDERS early in the season.

I agree Frank. But if, and I mean IF, it would make a diffrence, the line makers would be on it in no time.

And speaking about the time in a game .... I always get a kick out of the last 2 minutes of the half and the game. During the whole game the refs casually walk around and place the ball back in play. But during the "2 minute warning," they run and scramble to get the ball placed back in play. This happens a lot in the NFL. Now I know coaches are doing the "time management" thing during the games, but if the refs would hurry to place the ball on every play, I think it would make for a more high scoring game.

SPurrier, Fulmer and many others hate the rules. Personally, as a Florida State fan, I like the rules. With all the passing that they do, games would last 4 hours, which is too long for a football game, imo. Coaches feel that tis will decrease the total number of plays by 15-18 plays per game.

I don't think this will change the scoring a ton........

I think what will happen less often is totals of 56+ still going over after a 3-3; 7-0 first half.

I agree TOTALLY...but I must say that it is my belief that vegas HAS already adjusted the obvious numbers that the PUBLIC will be all over, and that is under the totals. Everybody mentions how these rule changes will keep the totals down. I too think totals will be down, but I believe those numbers have already been adjusted. A mistake I feel many make in their handicapping is not taking into account (to some extent) betting patterns, that this mentioned adjustment would take into consideration.

I think the refs suck in CFB and move their asses too slow. I hate how the clock always stops.
