    Six Pack for Saturday

-- Carlos Lee got two hits in his Ranger debut; I guess the Rangers figured if they can't trade for pitching, just try to outslug everyone. Not sure what Brewers will do with their new OF Mench, who is really a DH.
-- Local entry in National Championships, City Rocks, won Pool O Friday, beating Alabama Ice in key game- big game Sunday at 2:30, if form holds, with City Rocks opposing the Queen City Prophets of Cincinnati in second round, thats if both sides win their first round game, as expected.
-- Prophets rallied from double digit deficit to beat Rising Stars Gold in front of huge crowd Friday night, including a very interested dad (Michael Jordan). We like Jeff Jordan as a player; are shocked he hasn't gotten more college offers.
-- 8,580 entrants in World Series of Poker, meaning that the first prize will be $11.7M.
-- As of Friday night, the final twelve players will all cash in at least a million dollars. Thats top 12 out of 8,580.
-- After three days at Saratoga, all four handicappers on the NBA page are ahead of the game at the Spa, led by red-hot Danny the Glover. Log in every day during Saratoga for the picks from four knowledgeable, avid horse players.

      Weekend List of Thirteen

What to do when circus comes to town
      13) You had to be there to believe it. The Milk House here at Disney's Wide World of Sports has a main floor that is cut in four pieces by nets, making four courts. Usually, about forty or so coaches will watch a game from the baseline, and maybe another 25-30 from stands. Most games are fairly quiet.

      12) Thursday's schedule had some juice to it, though; Court 1 at 8:30, Rising Stars Gold, with Jeffrey Jordan playing, and in the evening's last game, D-I Greyhounds, with OJ Mayo, Bill Walker, the most-hyped AAU team in America. Some solid entertainment for a Thursday night in Florida.

Had to be 1,000 people ringing Court 1 at all angles. Amazing.

      11) Jordan's team has some solid guys on it: Mantilla, Clark, Stovall, Thompson. Good players, solid team. Young Jordan is a lefty wing who shoots it well, has very quick first step, and looks to set his teammates up with passes off his dribble penetration. An impressive player; not his dad, but who is?

      10) We learned tonight Yale is trying to recruit young Jordan; a move that would benefit both sides; Jordan would eat up the Ivy League while getting a great education, and maybe even help Yale win the Ivy for first time since 1959.

      9) So while Jeffrey Jordan isn't his dad's equal as a player, he could do something his dad never did; build his college team from current mediocrity to NCAA tournament-caliber. We're hoping the kid gives Yale a chance.

      8) When Michael Jordan enters a gym, its like nothing you've ever seen: the guy keeping the clock at the scorers' table had a disposable camera to take a picture of Michael with-- kids in my section were hanging over the railing, just to get glimpse of America's most famous basketball dad. Camera phones all over that corner of the gym going off the whole game. Wow.

      7) Rising Stars won their game easily; they play offsite Friday at 2:30, then rejoin the circus on Court 1 at 8:30 Friday night.

      6) Then it was the Greyhounds' turn; they strolled onto the court at 4:30 before tipoff, then took their opponent with the same casual air, but OBC Elite of Orlando would have nothing to do with a Greyhound coronation. Greyhounds pulled away in last 4:00 to win by 11, but this was a 2-point game with 5:00 or so to play. Spunky effort by OBC Elite.

      5) OJ Mayo is impressive on the dribble, almost unstoppable on his way to the goal. His passing wasn't so hot in this game and he seemed more strong than quick. The way his game is hyped in the media, it is almost impossible for him to rise up to meet expectations. But he is real good for high school kid.

      4) Bill Walker sole three passes in this game with such ease that he almost seemed like a man playing against boys; he is unemotional, almost blase about things (at least he was this night) and he wasn't on court when game was tight with 4:00 left to play, but he is ruggedly built, made shots when he had a chance and had a quiet confidence about him. I have a guy who is my Ohio hoop expert-- he likes Walker over Mayo.

      3) The pressing question about these kids, is whether it is a good idea to spend lot of resources recruiting them, since it is likely they'll only spend one year on your campus (Carmelo Anthony's name ring a bell here?). Why not go for lesser kid who will play longer for you? Interesting debate on this one.

      2) So Friday night, the end of pool play in the tournament, is a second night of circus-like proportions: Jordanaires at 8:30, Mayo/Walker show at 10, both on Court 1. Good stuff.

      1) How does ESPNU not show the title game of this tourney on Tuesday? It would be a natural for the sports network; if OJ Mayo or Jeffrey Jordan is playing, then even moreso.

            Hot

Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels) - The Angels rookie sensation is looking for his eighth straight win today as he faces the Red Sox. He is 7-0 on the season with a stingy 1.15 ERA in 47 innings of work. Weaver and the Angels are listed as +119 underdogs today with the total set at 9.

Jon Garland (Chicago White Sox) - Garland has won four straight starts and six of his last seven. The big right-hander is an impressive 10-3 on the season with 63 strikeouts. The under has hit in eight of Garland`s last 10 trips to the hill. The White Sox are listed as -153 road favorites today in Baltimore. The total is set at 10.

Brad Radke (Minnesota Twins) - Radke has a mediocre 9-7 record this season but the Twins hurler hasn`t lost a start in nine trips to the mound, recording five wins and four no-decisions during this stretch. He`s also 19-8 lifetime against Detroit. While Radke`s totals usually fluctuate between 9 and 10 1/2, the righty has played the under in three of his last four starts. The Twins are favored tonight against the mighty Tigers. Oddsmakers have them pegged at -108 with the total set at 9.

Chris Young (San Diego Padres) - Putting Young on this list was a bit of a toss up. The tall Padres starter has four no-decisions in his last seven starts and has a weak 7.20 ERA in his last three. He`s also given up a home run in four straight games. However, in nine road starts this year, Young has yet to lose a decision, with home batters only hitting only .182 against the Padres youngster. The Padres are +100 underdogs tonight against Jeff Francis and the Colorado Rockies.

            Cold

Jae Seo (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - Since coming to Tampa from Los Angeles, the D-Rays reliever-turned-starter has lost five straight starts, giving up 36 hits in that span. He`s walked 14 batters and has struck out only 10. The Devil Rays are huge +270 road underdogs in New York as they take on the Yankees (7-2 this season vs. Tampa Bay).

Jarrod Washburn (Seattle Mariners) - Washburn, a former 18-game winner, hasn`t won a start since a June 9 win over the Angels. That`s seven straight starts without a win. The Mariners left-hander has had a dismal season, going 4-10 with a 4.58 ERA. The M`s are +125 underdogs tonight and the total is set at 10.

Michael O`Connor (Washington Nationals) - O`Connor is winless in six straight trips to the hill and opposing teams have had multi-homer games in his last three starts. During his winless streak, O`Connor has struck out only 14 hitters. The over has played in all of his last three starts, resulting in an inflated 11.91 ERA in those games. The Nats are +125 dogs against the Dodgers.

            Other Notables

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - Beckett has surrendered just three earned runs in his last two starts

"Astros are 3-11 with Oswalt if they score six or less runs."

That is just terrible as Oswalt is getting no support. A good team should try and get him.

From BC: "Read somewhere Radke is retiring after this season too."

Well, he sure has been a quality performer for a long, long time and deserves to hang 'em up if he wants. I hate to hear it, though, because I really believe that those young Detroit pitchers are coming along so quickly largely because they have Radke's and Rogers' experience to draw from. I'd love to see what would happen with those guys under tutelage from Radke and Rogers for one more season!

A good veteran choice to replace him in that rotation just might be Roy Oswalt if another team doesn't have him sewed up before season's end.

From above: "Detroit pitchers" "Rogers' "

Sorry! I had just been looking at that game and had those guys on my mind. I meant to say Twins and Johann Santana.
