    Six Pack for Thursday

-- Mets had their tenth walkoff win of year Wednesday.
-- Mark Prior was pulled after 5.2 IP with no-hitter, having thrown 103 pitches. He is seventh pitcher since 2000 to get taken out of a game while tossing a no-hitter.
-- Twins are 34-8 in last 42 games; during that time, they've made up only three games on the Tigers.
-- A's starting pitchers have four quality starts in their last eighteen games. Bullpen has too much strain on it.
-- Phil Hellmuth won his 10th World Series of Poker title on Thursday, joining ****** Chan, Doyle Brunson as only players to win ten WSOP bracelets.
-- Sad to report that Harold Reynolds was fired by ESPN, as result of sexual harassment charges. We like Reynolds, and hope the network thinks twice about its decision.

      Thursday's List of Thirteen

Big day for our horse experts, and visit by big-name coaches perk up the Shootout..........
      13) Remember back in school, when kids would screw around on the substitute teacher, but would straighten up as soon as the regular teacher came back? Wednesday, we had evidence that this takes place, even on the basketball court.

      12) We had seen the Pittsburgh Jots play three games. this week, in high-scoring games, where Jots played sporadically; they almost had fracas in game against Gauchos, finishing it with five guys, after two players were ejected- they had big comeback to win next game, and also had double OT win.

      11) So Thursday afternoon, here are the Jots playing a strong SYF team, but now the stakes were different, as Bob Huggins walked in the gym and sat right underneath the basket where the Jots shot in first half. Huggins is so recognizable, he isn't even wearing Kansas State gear.

      10) Herb Pope of the Jots is a strong inside player (think of Danny Fortson as parallel) who is being recruited by K-State, and his level of intensity in this game was off the charts, way higher than in any of the three other games we'd seen. They also gave him the ball more, where in previous games their shot selection was more balanced. Clearly, Huggins' sitting at the baseline picked up the intensity on both benches.

      9) By the way, Robbie Hummel, a 6-8 kid from Valparaiso, IN, had huge dunk on an offenive rebound and was instrumental in SYF's 78-77 win. Hummel reminds me a lot of Wilson kid who played so well for Wichita State last spring.

      8) BABC out of Boston has precocious group of kids who've not only won 16-year old Shootout, but fared pretty well in the 17-year old event, too. Two of Paul Pressey's sons play for BABC; ironically, BABC lost to Tulsa Bulldogs, since the elder Pressey played college ball at U of Tulsa.

      7) Potential problem for BABC is that Pressey might be on his way to Texas to live, which means the kids will be changing summer teams next year. Phil Pressey, a 5-3 9th-grader (yes, I said 9th grader) is as clever in lane with the ball as anyone in his age/size group since a young Kenny Anderson.

      6) As always, one of the coolest parts of this event is seeing teams from different parts of nation face each other; kids are able to gauge their games against the best the rest of country has to offer. Hopefully, when they go home, they work on the parts of their games that need improvement.

      5) When talking to Northwestern State's Mike McConathy on Tuesday, he noted that there was no AAU ball when he was a player. "We went into gyms and worked on our skills and became better." Sometimes, summer ball seems too reliant on games, and overall skill level suffers for it.

      4) It is funny watching game with 50 or 60 coaches all sitting there; there are only 20 or so players in each game, so most of coaches aren't getting a kid from those games with a crowd on each baseline. Getting that one key player can turn losing program into a winning one, though, so programs sometimes clutch at straws, in search of the elusive gem.

      3) The national championship tournament starts here in six hours or so (9am Thursday). Jeffrey Jordan plays on Court 1 at 8:30 each of the next two nights, followed by OJ Mayo and the D-I Greyhounds at 10pm. Solid entertainment.

      2) We have four horse handicappers working Saratoga meet this summer, investing a mythical $50 a day; if you had taken their advice and invested $200 in their selections Wednesday you would have cashed tickets worth $711.40. Good work.

      1) In addition to the four horsemen picking the ponies here, I'm down here in Florida until Monday covering summer hoop scene, and once I get back, we'll delve further into previews for this season's football. All good reasons to log on daily.

            GOOD MORNING BC CREW -DJ

            Thursday`s streaking starting pitchers

            Hot

Scott Olsen (Florida Marlins) - Olsen is coming off his best outing of the year after pitching 6 2/3 innings allowing just six hits and no earned runs while striking out 11 batters. He is unbeaten in July with a 2-0 record and a 3.18 ERA in four starts. His overall record now stands at 8-4 and his season ERA stands at 4.01.

Surprisingly, the Marlins have played over in three of Olsen`s last four trips to the mound. Florida is a -108 favorite when it wraps up a three-game set with with the Atlanta Braves (+100) today. The total is set at 9 1/2.

Cory Lidle (Philadelphia Phillies) - The Phillies seem to come alive lately when Lidle takes the hill. He is 3-0 with a 4.12 ERA in his last three starts bringing his record back to 7-7. In those three starts, Philadelphia bats have combined for a whopping 26 runs of support. More good news for the Phillies: Four of Lidle`s seven wins have come against the NL West this year and the Phillies take on the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. Oddsmakers have Philly listed as a -133 favorite.

Josh Fogg (Colorado Rockies) - It`s hard to believe there is a hot pitcher for the Rockies right now but Fogg and a few others on the pitching staff have done all they can do to snap Colorado out of the current 3-13 slump. He will try to imitate fellow starters Jeff Francis and Jason Jennings, both of whom threw complete-games earlier this week. Fogg is 3-0 over his last five with no decisions in his last two, but he pitched well in those outings. The Rockies are -112 favorites when the host the San Diego Padres (+104) tonight.

            Cold

Rich Hill (Chicago Cubs) - So, the beginning of Hill`s major league career hasn`t been the smoothest of rides. It`s not like he has a great team to back him up or anything.

In his second year with the Cubs, Hill is yet to record a win. Actually, every time he has been on the mound - relief or starting - the Cubs have lost. They are 0-10 when he makes an appearance in a game the last two years. In four starts this season, Hill is 0-4 with a humbling 9.31 ERA. Chicago is a +125 home underdog against the St. Louis Cardinals tonight.

            Other Notables

Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants) - Cain allowed just two earned runs on seven hits in his last start.

Ted Lilly (Toronto Blue Jays) - 4-1 in his last seven starts with a 2.93 ERA.
