    Six-Pack for Wednesday
-- Carlos Zambrano hit his fourth homer of season against the Mets Tuesday; major league record is seven.
-- Anibel Sanchez has started 32 innings in five starts, and has been scored upon in only two of them.
-- Toronto is now 16-2 in Halladay's last eighteen starts.
-- Kenny Rogers threw 48 pitches, got two outs, and gave up seven runs in Cleveland Tuesday. You need to get to Detroit games on time; lot of runs are scored early on.
-- If I'm Royals' fan, and I wait all year for the closer to get healthy, then ten days later they trade him to Chicago, I'd probably be upset. Back to Ambiorex Burgos as closer.
-- All four AL West teams lost Tuesday. What a mess.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........
    13) Remember last March, when NW Louisiana beat Iowa in NCAA's? It was best story of first round. Well, we had fun on Tuesday visiting with Demons' coach Mike McConathy, who is here recruiting and also watching his son Logan play.

    12) McConathy is as polite a coach as you'd like to meet; he graciously answered a lot of questions, and clued me in on a lot of his basketball philosophy, which centers on players who can score, and on teams that work together, have fun. No team was more fun to watch last year than his Demons.

    11) He told me how even though NW Louisiana played both Oklahoma State and Wichita State last year, the loudest arena his team played in was at Utah State's Spectrum.

    10) I thank Coach for teaching me lot about hoops today and we wish him and the Demons a lot of luck in the future.

    9) Wide World of Sports was mobbed today, with soccer and baseball tournaments going on, as well as the basketball. On Friday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers' training camp opens here.

    8) This is impossible to determine, but would love to know the number of kids who play here who get scholarships, who otherwise wouldn't get a free ride to college.

    7) D-I coaches sometimes have to "babysit" players they've already convinced to commit to attend their schools, sitting and watching their games, all the while hoping the kid isn't going to play well, as to draw attention from more prominent program. One of the stranger parts of recruiting.

    6) Some of the bigger names are in town now: Billy Donovan, Tom Crean, Tom Izzo, Bobby Cremins. Florida wins because on a Monday night near midnight, Donovan is sitting in an upstairs gym, watching one of his recruits play, instead of being back at the hotel being content with his championship.

    5) I've been here almost a week, and the days blend together, but in a fun way. At one point this morning, took me five full minutes to remember what day it was.

    4) Geno Auriemma's Coinnecticut Elite team lost 70-65 to club from Pittsburgh, which then got whacked 76-57 by Cyclones from New Jersey.

    3) Teams that had to play extra game in brackets didn't do a lot Tuesday; in Silver Bracket, they were 2-8; in Bronze, they were 2-3, and in Copper Division, they were 1-2, for a total record of 5-13. Playing that extra game saps a lot of energy.

    2) Wednesday is the tournament part of the Showcase, with four different divisions being contested; Thursday, finals of the Showcase take place, and the National Championship is set to get underway. Lot of good stuff the rest of the week.

    1) Gold Division bracket starts play Wednesday, with some of the better games shaping up this way:
    Illinois Warriors-Queen City (Cincinnati) Prophets
    Georgia Stars-Charlotte Royals
All Ohio Red vs Howard Pulley Panthers (Minnesota)
    Arkansas Wings vs Pittsburgh Jots

GOOD MORNING SPARK, UDOG AND PM AND ALL OF BC
      BEST OF LUCK TODAY
      - DJ

      TODAY'S STREAKING PITCHERS
Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - The American League is littered with sensational rookie pitchers this year and Verlander is one of them. He is 12-4 with a sparkling 2.77 ERA and 80 strikeouts. He leads the Tigers in ERA, wins, and WHIP, and has given up the least amount of home runs, allowing just 11 all year. He is unbeaten in his last six starts with a 5-0 record. Detroit wraps up a three-game set with the Cleveland Indians today and oddsmakers have set the Tigers as -108 favorites.

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - A month ago Atlanta backers were ready to bail on their beloved Braves but things have changed. Thank the old veteran Smoltz, who is 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 30 strikeouts in the month of July. He is now 8-5 and is tied for ninth in the majors with an impressive 123 K`s. Altanta is a -153 favorite against the Florida Marlins tonight. Smoltz is 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA in his career versus the Braves.

Brandon Webb (Arizona Diamondbacks) - After starting the season 8-0, Webb cooled off and struggled for a few starts but he`s got the train back on the tracks. In his last four outings he is 3-0 with a 1.16 ERA while the Diamondbacks were victorious in all of those starts. He has gone at least seven innings in his last five trips to the mound, allowing just two home runs over that stretch while striking out 32 batters. Oddsmakers have Arizona listed as a -133 favorite against the Philadelphia Phillies tonight.

      Other Notables

Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) - 9-6 with a 2.92 ERA this season.

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - 10-4 with a 3.22 ERA and 89 K`s this season.

John Maine (New York Mets) - Pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout in his last start.
