              Scouting report

              Det vs Clev
Verlander joined the ranks of the AL wins leaders with six innings of one-run ball Friday night against the A's. Instead of simply hammering away with his upper-90s fastball, the 23-year-old rookie mixed in his breaking ball and changeup in two-strike counts, catching Oakland hitters off guard. If he can continue to round out his arsenal, he'll make news in the second half beyond simply trying to hold up under the strain of a full big-league season.

The Indians' defense hasn't been playing well behind Sabathia lately. And, quite frankly, he hasn't been pitching all that well, either. Sabathia gave up six runs, four of which were earned, to the Twins on July 15 and followed that up by giving up eight runs, only three of which were earned, in just 3 2/3 innings against the Twins on Friday. To add insult to ineffectiveness, Sabathia was ejected as he departed the game for arguing about the strike zone.

              Mets vs Cubs
This will be Prior's sixth start, and second since coming off the DL for a second time. In his last outing against the Nationals, he gave up four runs on four hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings. Prior's velocity was good, but his command was off. It's simply a matter of not pitching enough.

Maine has continued to progress with each start for the big league club this year. Pitching against an improved Astros lineup with newly acquired third baseman Aubrey Huff, the 25-year-old rookie limited the Astros to only five base runners, allowing just two of them to reach second base. The right-hander went the distance, needing only 98 pitches for his first career complete game in the Mets' 7-0 victory on July 21. In 26 innings this season, Maine has an excellent strikeout-to-walk ratio of 20-to-7.

              CWS vs Min
Silva continued to struggle in his outing against the Indians. He gave up 13 hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings. On the season, he has surrendered 150 hits in just over 100 innings pitched. Silva was handed a big lead against the Indians, but was unable to get through the fifth. He is 0-2 with a 13.00 ERA in two starts against the White Sox this season.

After four losses in a row, Buehrle will try to pull out his first win of the second half. He gave up five earned runs in seven innings in his last outing, but he said that he felt he threw better than he had in his previous losses. Buehrle is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA already this season in two starts against the Twins.

              Pgh vs Mil
Maholm took his fifth loss in his past six decisions in his last start against the Marlins. The rookie southpaw allowed three earned runs on five hits over six innings. Maholm comes into the start having earned just one win on the road. In his last start against the Brewers on June 1, Maholm allowed two runs on eight hits over seven innings, but picked up a no-decision.

Capuano brushed off a rain delay of nearly three hours and pitched six strong innings at Cincinnati last week before running into trouble in the seventh. He put together his 18th quality start (six or more innings and three or fewer earned runs) and was set to join three other National League starters with at least 11 wins, but lost his chance when Derrick Turnbow was unable to convert a save in the ninth. Capuano is 1-1 in a pair of starts against the Pirates, working six innings each time.

              Cards vs Col
Facing the Dodgers for the second straight game, Suppan was masterful in his last start, shutting out Los Angeles over seven innings. In his last two games, Suppan has given up one run and 10 hits in 14 innings of work. He is 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA against the Rockies in two home starts this season.

Cook had pitched well to no avail for several outings, but that wasn't the case in his last start. Cook gave up 11 hits and five runs in a season-low 4 2/3 innings, while throwing a season-high 111 pitches. Cook has thrown well at Coors Field this season, where he is 3-4 with a 3.84 ERA. He lost his only start against St. Louis on June 16 despite allowing two earned runs over seven innings.

              Ariz vs Phil
Webb got himself an early lead in his last start against the Dodgers on July 20 and never looked back as he earned his 11th win of the season. The right-hander gave up two runs on seven hits over eight innings for his third win in his last four starts. Webb had a no-decision in his only start against the Phillies this season, allowing three earned runs over seven innings while striking out seven.

Lieber has shown no lingering effects in his three starts since returning from a strained groin that cost him close to six weeks. In his last outing, he went 6 2/3 innings, giving up four runs and while he was not credited with the win, he gave the Phillies the chance to beat San Diego, which they did. Perhaps more important than his totals was the fact that he threw a season-high 123 pitches -- a number that has increased in each start since returning.

              KC vs Balt
Loewen was pressed into early duty in his last outing, taking the mound just six batters into the game after starter Russ Ortiz failed to get a single out at Tampa Bay. Loewen responded well at first, allowing just two hits over the first three innings before surrendering five runs -- four on a grand slam -- in the fourth. He has yet to face the Royals in his career, but prior to his last outing, opponents hit just .237 off him when he's on the road.

Making his sixth start of the season, Gobble is still working on stretching his stamina after spending most of the year in the bullpen. He took a no-decision in his most recent start Thursday against the Angels. Gobble was shaky for the third straight outing, allowing six hits and four runs in four-plus innings.
