    Tuesdays Scouting Report

    LAA vs TB
Santana is 7-0 in nine starts since his last loss on May 31 against the Twins. Santana, however, is coming off perhaps his worst outing of the season. In a no-decision on Thursday at Kansas City, Santana walked a career-high eight batters and uncorked two wild pitches in 4 1/3 innings. He threw just 46 strikes in 103 pitches, allowing four runs and five hits.

Shields pitched well until the fifth inning in his last start against Minnesota on Thursday. The Twins batted around and scored four runs as six of the first seven hitters reached base. In his last five starts, Shields is 0-4 with an 8.89 ERA.

    Tiger vs Clev
Rogers didn't get a win for his six innings of one-run ball Thursday against the White Sox, but he nonetheless put a stop to a four-start stretch of struggles that pushed his ERA up nearly a full run. He hasn't taken a loss since the Indians knocked him out with five runs over 4 1/3 innings May 28 at Comerica Park.

Byrd threw the sixth quality start in his last eight outings and defeated the Angels on Wednesday. He allowed a season-high 10 hits, some of the broken-bat variety, but ended up giving up just three runs in six innings. Byrd, who is not a power pitcher, said he had to struggle to not overthrow against his former teammates and worked around baserunners in every inning.

    CWS vs Minn
Not known for walking people, Santana issued four walks in his last outing Thursday. It was the first time in over 30 1/3 innings that a Twins pitcher had issued a walk. But it was Santana's ability on a day where he lacked his best pitches to still record a quality outing that shows just how dominant the ace has been again this season. Santana's next outing will provide him a chance to get some redemption from his loss in Chicago this past April, a place where he has had quite a bit of success in his career.

Contreras will try to start a new winning streak after his franchise-record 17 consecutive regular season win streak was broken in the first game of the second half. Contreras has now lost two straight. He pitched eight strong innings against the Twins at U.S. Cellular Field earlier this season and allowed two earned runs on six hits.

    NYY vs Tex
Mussina has allowed at least three runs in his past three starts after a brilliant first half to the season. He surrendered four earned runs in seven innings in his last start against Toronto, but was also hampered by a costly error by Alex Rodriguez. Mussina is 14-12 with a 3.82 career ERA versus Texas.

Eaton is making his first start of the season after missing four months with a torn tendon sheath on the middle finger of his right hand. The injury occured right at the end of Spring Training and required surgery. He was acquired in a six-player trade with the San Diego Padres in the offseason. He has made one start against the Yankees in his career, on June 11, 2004 in Yankee Stadium. He beat them, 10-2, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings. Players coming off injury has not faired well this year when coming back.

    Pgh vs Mil
A pair of home runs by Miguel Cabrera and Mike Jacobs as well as an RBI double by Hanley Ramirez were the only blemishes on a six-inning effort by Snell in his last start against the Marlins. Snell ended up allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and just one walk to pick up his fifth no-decision of the season.

The team has not made a formal announcement, but Sheets appears set to return to the rotation on this date assuming no further setbacks in his rehabilitation from shoulder tendinitis. Sheets began the year on the disabled list with a muscle injury behind his right shoulder, then was shut down after four starts with tightness in the front of his shoulder. When healthy, Sheets is one of the best pitchers in the National League, but he hasn't been healthy since August. I'm looking for lots of runs here.

    Balt vs KC
Benson allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings in his last start to lose his fourth straight decision. The right-hander allowed one run in seven innings to defeat the Royals in his only game against them this season.

Redman was a victim of the Royals' lack of run support and suffered his first loss in seven decisions against the Red Sox on Wednesday. Redman allowed one run and seven hits over eight innings. He struck out nine batters and did not allow a free pass on the day. KC has scored alot of runs for their pitchers the last few weeks..

    Cards vs Col
Carpenter delivered another gem on July 19 against the Braves. He threw seven strong innings, allowing just two runs. The right-hander worked the plate effectively and was constantly ahead of hitters, throwing just 77 pitches in seven innings. He also threw his changeup more often, a pitch he has used with greater frequency in recent starts.

After a run of strong starts, Jennings faltered against Pittsburgh, giving up six two-out runs as the Rockies fell, 6-5. However, Jennings had not given up more than two runs in any of his previous six starts. Jennings is 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA at home this season.

    Bos vs Oak
Schilling heads to the mound with momentum after his last win, a seven-inning effort against the Rangers on Thursday. He allowed a season-high 10 hits and four runs, but walked just one while striking out six. Schilling has worked at least seven innings in four of his last five starts and has gone at least six in each of his last 12 starts. The last time Schilling faced Oakland he shut out the A's on two hits over seven innings in a 7-0 win July 15 at Fenway Park.

Windsor's two-out throwing error led to two unearned runs, and the A's 0-for-11 performance with runners in scoring position cost the right-hander a victory in his first Major League start on July 17. Windsor allowed five hits and walked three before leaving after five innings with a pitch count of 86.

    Tor vs Seattle
Halladay made a quality start, though he did not have his best stuff against the Yankees. The Toronto ace allowed eight hits, but he escaped major damage with inning-ending double plays in the third and fourth. Halladay allowed three runs in 7 2/3 innings, but a blown save from B.J. Ryan prevented Halladay from his Major League-leading 13th win. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 3.42 ERA in nine career appearances against the Mariners, including a six-inning, four-run performance against them on July 15.

Meche retired the first 13 hitters he faced in his last start, Tuesday against New York, though he earned a no-decision when the Yankees tied the game late. Meche, who hasn't lost since May 30, allowed two runs on five hits in six innings with six strikeouts. He had good command of his slider and changeup, as well as his mid-90s fastball.
