    Six-Pack for Monday
-- Congrats to BABC, which won the 16/under Shootout on Sunday, beating YOMCA 66-59 in final. Georgia Stars had both their teams in Final Four, but lost semis by 2,4 points.
-- Jeff Madsen, 21-yr old UCSB student, has now won two World Series of Poker bracelets in two weeks, cashing in a cool $1.4M in the process. That doesn't happen much.
-- Jered Weaver is now 7-0 for the Angels; his rapid rise to majors will lead way for more kids being rushed to the bigs.
-- Has a pitcher ever gone from allowing 12 runs in one start to throwing eight shutout innings in his next? Cardinals' Jason Marquis turned that trick this week.
-- End of Boston-Seattle game was amazing; Beltre hit weird inside-park homer, when Crisp, Ramirez butchered ball off wall in left-center, then Putz gave up tying homer to Varitek in top of ninth, before Sexton hit walkoff winner for M's.
-- Tigers scored 11 first inning runs in last two games.

Monday's List of 13: 12 kids we liked, our all-name team
      13) Carlos Morales, Orlando Wizards-- We walk in gym back on Friday, and Carlos is first kid we see draw a charge, which impresses us. Not a lot of charges drawn in the summer.

      12) Carter McMasters, Smyrna Stars-- Lives in Tennessee, is on AAU team from South Carolina; go figure. At 6-10, still growing, he has solid outside shot and is growing into both his body and his game. A D-I coach told me he thinks the kid will be a very good player someday.

      11) Javier Frazier, Broward All-Stars-- When opponents put a diamond-and-1 on teammate Sam Ernie, Javier penetrated and hit key buckets, and also knocked down couple of treys in a close win, when I saw him play. Liked his poise.

      10) Ian Sando, Tulsa Dream-- Dream went 0-3 in pool, had bus that kept breaking down, but Sando got every loose ball in a half I saw him play. His coach tells me he is only 14-- he has an awful-looking shot, but he made his share during games. We love kids who have a knack for getting loose balls.

      9) Jacolby Pittman, Jackson Tigers-- Worked on his moves in post at halftime of game his team was up 18; never saw a kid do that before. Has to grow into his body, but will be a highly recruited kid next year, and with good reason.

      8) Shamon Cox, Southpointe Shooters-- Played great in one game I saw, after putting in uninspired performance first time I saw him play. If he has the ball, the shot clock is on 5, and it ain't ever going to hit zero. Things happen, and quickly when he gets ball. Tries to make passes that are too difficult, but is an explosive offensive player. Doesn't always run floor well.

      7) Our all-name team for the 16/under Showcase; strangely, I only saw two of these kids play, but looked through rosters to find the catchiest, most unique names......

Cardarius Smoot, Birmingham Bearcats (You know a lot of thought goes into choosing a name when Cardarius wins)
Cedric Josh Crittle, Meanstreets (I'd go with CJ Crittle, if I were him, but either name is catchy enough for us)
Brock Dockery, Gulf Coast (sounds like a movie PI)
Gideon Gamble, Atlanta Celtics (Janet Gretzky's favorite)
Moody Norris IV, Georgia Stars Black (There were three other family members named Moody?)
      Honorable mention names:
      Quinche Dowdell, Tennessee Travelers
      Decario Tidwell, Kappa Magic

      6) DeWayne Davis, Pennsylvania Red Storm-- Deep range on his jump shot, NBA range; when he is inspired, like he was in Saturday night's game at Cypress Creek, he is very good, a huge talent. Most of the time, he takes questionable shots and doesn't apply himself enough on defense, rebounding.

      5) Demetrius Baldwin, Southpointe Shooters Gold-- Played on a team where the coach's son was like 3-24 (not kidding) from the arc in a couple of games I saw; but Baldwin can shoot, he can pass, is athletic, and tried hard to distribute. I liked his game, but he got frustrated playing on a dysfunctional team.

      4) Tashan Newsome, CD Raptors-- Rumored to be switching from Bishop Maginn to Colonie (Armadillo's alma mater) for this season; not sure why he didn't play much at Maginn (he took Marcus Jordan twice in row on dribble drives Saturday) but he'll help Colonie. Has too much french pastry in his play he has to become more fundamental, but he is a good player.

      3) Tanner Smith, Georgia Stars-- Had polish to his game- can pass ball, see court. Good fundamental player on a good team that lost in semifinals of Showcase. Solid rebounder- the kind of guy who does nothing but help his team win.

      2) Austin Emerson, Martin Brothers-- Didn't miss a shot in a game I saw-- overshadowed on his team by Matt Gatons, a Iowa recruit, but he is good role player who fills it up from the outside. Martin Brothers always has fundamentally sound kids-- Nick Collison and Kirk Heinrich played for them.

      1) Eric Pannicco, Charlotte Nets-- Game I saw was tied with 90 seconds left; he dove head-first for loose ball, got it, then hit teammate with good reversal for open shot, and then, when opponent missed game-tying shot, he pulled down rebound in big crowd to seal the deal. Did lot of little things well.

                Monday`s streaking starting pitchers

Chris Young (San Diego Padres) - The Padres take on Derek Lowe and the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight as slim +104 road underdogs based on the 6`10" Young`s strength away from home this season. Young is 4-0 with a 2.24 ERA on the road in `06.

Barry Zito (Oakland Athletics) - The surfboarder is 2-1 over his last three starts for the A`s with a 2.70 ERA in 20 innings pitched. Oakland hosts the Boston Red Sox tonight as +105 home underdogs.

Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) - The fact that the Rockies are only +104 home underdogs tonight against the powerhouse St. Louis Cardinals is due in large part to the recent success of the Canadian lefty. Francis sports a 2.50 ERA over his last three outings without allowing a home run.

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) - Lackey has a 2.17 ERA this season away from Anaheim with a 0.98 WHIP. The righthander is 2-1 over his last three starts with a 1.99 ERA as the Angels take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays tonight as -177 road favorites.

Jeremy Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) - Not only is Bonderman 3-0 over his last three starts with a 2.91 ERA, the upstart Tigers hurler is 6-0 on the road in `06 with a stellar 2.65 ERA. Bonderman has only given up two roundtrippers in 68 innings pitched away from Comerica Park this season. The Tigers play the Cleveland Indians tonight as -116 road favorites.
